Cannes Confidential Season 1 Finale Episode 6 Recap

Love And Let Die – As the finale of Cannes Confidential begins, Harry King (Jamie Bamber) watches the video of Emilie pleading for help. He tries to track the IP to find out where the video came from. Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) catches up with Harry to ask him about the girl. Camille learns that the girl is his daughter and that is why Harry is in Cannes. She insists Julien won’t hurt Emilie. Zina Lellouche (Keziah Marechaux) picks up a gift bag and takes it to Celeste Badeaux (Anggun). Celeste tells her to take whatever she wants and to try the perfume.

After falling asleep, Celeste wakes up and goes inside to check on Zina. She looks around until she finds Zina dead on the ground. At the station, Nina LeBlanc (Nancy Tate) tells Camille and Lea about Celeste and her assistant being dead. Nina wants it taken care of quickly because the festival starts today. She explains that the Festival of Cannes is one of the largest media events in the world. Lea tells Camille that Zina was a blogger around her age. Camille recommends Lea take the lead on this one since she has to meet Genevieve about her father’s new hearing. Harry finds his daughter. In a flashback, Julien Boire (Hugo Brunswick) is shown bribing Emilie (Ava Griffith) to make the video.

Harry calls Camille to say they need to meet. Camille says it is a hectic day because they’re preparing for her dad’s new hearing. After the call, Camille insists to Genevieve that nothing is going on between herself and Harry. At the scene, Ramzy Chabat (Sammy Lechae) notices that the victim’s tongue is swollen. It could be as simple as an allergic reaction, but it could also be poisoning. Lea approaches Celeste to ask her some questions. Celeste says they were enjoying a normal morning before the premiere tonight. She got in late last night and Zina was already in. Celeste tells Lea about the goody bag they received. She told Zina to try the perfume.

Lea admits it could be an allergic reaction although they won’t know until the autopsy is performed. Zina was always careful about what she ate and prepared her own meals. Ramzy interrupts to tell Lea that the victim suffered a massive cardiac arrest. He will need to analyze the perfume and any foods and drinks Zina might’ve had. The amount required to trigger a heart attack is way more than you’d normally find in a bottle of perfume. Celeste remembers Zina said she was going to prepare lunch. Lea asks if she has received any threats lately. Zina handled her social media. They always had trolls and blabbermouths. There is a paparazzi who has been chasing Celeste ever since she ridiculed him publicly.

She sued him and they won. When Lea asks what she means by that, Celeste says the LGBTQ community won. Celeste says Zina had a girlfriend named Eloise Gans. The name of the paparazzi in question is Miko Zajac. Once they go outside, someone snaps pictures of them from a distance. As they leave, Ramzy figures out who Celeste is and admits she is a great actress. They go over possible motives for the murder although Ramzy suggests it may just be an accident. Camille checks in with Lea at the station. She learns about Miko being fined and swearing to get back at Celeste. The goody bags were supplied by a company called Swag Bags. They said that all bags are sealed and delivered separately.

Camille suggests the bag was meant for Celeste and it was a reaction to poison that killed Zina. Lea will speak to Eloise while Camille can speak to the paparazzi. They’ll also need to check the blog. Camille approaches Harry who says he tracked Julien’s IP address using the video he sent. Lea visits Eloise who she already knows. Eloise (Chloe Hirschman) agrees to speak inside. Camille tells Henry that Genevieve said the financials, the Aloysius accounts, and Boire’s threats will make a difference. Harry is delighted for her, but he isn’t happy that they don’t have Julien. He agrees to honor their deal although he argues that Boire crossed a line. Camille pleads with him not to do anything stupid because it could blow up in their faces.

Eloise tells Lea that Zina had a congenital heart condition and serious allergies in particular to peanuts. She made everyone aware for obvious reasons. Eloise is surprised to hear they didn’t find an EpiPen because Zina never left home without it. She reveals they’ve been together for four years. Lea asks if she knows Miko Zajac. Eloise claims he is the creep who threatened Zina for destroying his new camera. They agree it is nice to see each other, but they wish it was under different circumstances. When Camille tracks down Miko, he ends up running from her. He gets away, but Camille ends up with his bag. She finds pictures of Celeste in it. Harry follows Julien Boire.

Once he gets into the building, he finds a door for Suis-Yola. When Boire comes out of the room, Harry manages to sneak inside. He tries to get information from the computer. Back at the station, Camille tells Lea what happened with Miko Zajac. Ramzy says the autopsy showed that Zina died of a heart attack caused by an allergic reaction. It has been confirmed that it wasn’t poison and nothing was found in the perfume. Anaphylaxis often begins within minutes after a person eats something or consumes a beverage that contains an offending allergen. If you have a peanut allergy, your body will be put in attack mode to defend itself from the protein causing the allergic reaction. Ramzy says they still need to find the allergen.

Camille believes they also need to find out who else knew about her medical condition. Eloise tells Lea that Zina was careful about what she ate and she would’ve never forgotten her EpiPen. She didn’t want anyone to know she had a weak heart. As a result, very few knew about it. She wanted everyone else to see her as a strong superwoman. Eloise asks Lea if she ever thinks about them because she does. Lea reminds Eloise that she broke her heart before they begin kissing. Lea tells her to stop. She can’t get involved because she is the investigator. Eloise apologizes. Harry tries to get helpful information from the data he took from the computer. He finds an email with Philippe Delmasse’s name on it.

Lea tells Camille that the allergies weren’t secret because they were made public on Zina’s blog. Margaux (Anna Franziska Jaeger) comes in and hears them talking about the paparazzi. She tells Camille that everything is ready for dad’s homecoming. He will be released tomorrow. Camille gets a call because Miko has been spotted. They watch Celeste meet Miko and give him money. Celeste curses Miko who says he’ll see her at the premiere. The police move in and arrest both of them. Once Miko is taken to an interview room, he tells them they’re barking up the wrong tree. He claims Celeste paid him for some photos he took. Miko admits the fans want to know what is going on in the bedroom. As for Celeste, she says she was being blackmailed by Zajac.

He had pictures of her and Zina and he threatened to leak them. Miko admits to having the pictures, but he says he wouldn’t kill Zina over a lousy camera. Celeste paid him to get rid of the pictures. Celeste had no problem going public, but she didn’t want it to happen like that. Camille asks whether Eloise knew about their relationship. Zina didn’t want to hurt her and instead wanted to wait to tell her. In private, Camille and Lea wonder who else knew about the affair. Lea tells Camille that Eloise was her high school crush. Camille receives a dinner invitation from Harry King. Julien receives a message telling him to do it tomorrow at 2 PM. Camille meets Harry who asks why a man and woman can’t enjoy dinner without it being called a date. Camille believes he held up his end of the bargain.

She gives him the passports back, but warns him it is still considered an offense to use fake credentials. While they sit down for dinner, Lea reads about Zina online. Ramzy tells her he found the offending allergen that triggered the anaphylactic shock. Zina was a devout vegan. In the salad, they found large traces of peanut extract. It was mixed with balsam vinegar. Lea says she is going to get a search warrant. Camille asks Harry if this is his way of trying to mix business and pleasure. They almost kiss until Harry changes the subject by saying he tracked down Julien Boire. He has evidence of Julien’s dirty little secrets. Harry asks why she didn’t say that Aloysius was her grandfather’s name. It all concerns a power struggle and sending one of their own to prison while using one of their fixers to do it.

Harry knows that her father is not innocent. He warns Camille that two heads will grow back if she cuts off one. If Philippe is released from prison, they will track him down and kill him. Camille doesn’t want to hear it so she storms off. Lea enters Eloise’s home with a search warrant. Ramzy finds the bottle of vinegar before Lea tells Eloise to come with her. Camille agrees to handle the investigation because Lea is too emotionally involved. Eloise admits she wanted to punish Zina for making her feel so needy, jealous, and angry. She confesses that Zina had many affairs, but the one with Celeste was different. Eloise believes Zina was about to leave her because she loved Celeste. She took her EpiPen and made her lunch. After that, Camille prepares for her father to come home.

Harry is there when Philippe is released. He tells Camille that Philippe isn’t the man she thinks he is. As Harry gives her the evidence, someone aims at him through the scope of a rifle. After Harry leaves, Philippe is shot as he is hugging Camille. She sees Julien in the window above. Philippe recovers in the hospital. Harry approaches Emilie and shows her a picture she drew a long time ago. She is happy to see her father. Philippe wakes up in the hospital. She saw the lines in his bank account and believes she is everything he taught her to be. Camille wants to know what he would have her do. He tells her something in her ear. Genevieve calls Julien to tell him that he failed on such an easy target, but he promises he won’t fail again. She says they’ll see if he deserves a second chance. Philippe tells Camille not to trust anyone because this goes much higher.

Cannes Confidential Review

The finale of Cannes Confidential wasn’t an improvement over the previous episodes although the last few minutes were interesting. It is hard to say whether there will be another season, but it would be fun to see where things go with Julien and Genevieve trying to kill Philippe. The final episode had some shaky performances even though they didn’t really take away from the story.

Through six episodes, Cannes and the local scenery were the highlights of the show. It is a shame that the show only skimmed the surface in this area though. The romance aspect of the series never hit home because it was all over the place, but Harry and Camille could possibly be a dynamic duo with a little more time and development.

If there was a guarantee of future improvements which are desperately needed, renewing the series would be warranted. Otherwise, what was offered in the first series probably doesn’t justify another season. Cannes Confidential was watchable with a few cringes and eye rolls in each episode and fits right at home on Acorn. The finale scores a 5.5 out of 10.

  1. William Candee says:

How do we know that Phillippe was the target and not Camille? Was there some dialogue that I missed that makes this certain?

    • ReelMockery says:

It has been a bit since I watched this show so I am just going off the memories I can recall. I am not sure there is anything that specifically points to Philippe as being the target, but some of the things said previously somewhat lead me to that conclusion. For instance, the way Harry kept telling Camille that he’d be a target if he was released.

If I recall correctly, I think they might’ve had this conversation more than once. He would’ve also been the one with any incriminating info hence why he was in prison. Just my two centers, but another viewer may interpret and remember differently. Hope this helps to some degree and thanks for stopping by!
