Britannia Season 2 Episode 9 Recap

We start the episode with Divis (Nikolaj Lie Kaas). He wakes up and begins looking for footprints so he can track down Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox). He rushes to a nearby tree and finds two stumps along with the bow. Divis picks up the bows and sits down. He suddenly realizes that he cannot move the bow from his lap or stand up. After the intro, we join Cait and Mallin (Tom Rhys Harries). Mallin has retrieved apples for both of them. They continue their journey while discussing Divis and his relationship with Cait. She says he was never her friend. They come across a squirrel so Cait performs a spell and turns it into her pet. Phelan (Julian Rhind-Tutt) walks through the woods and notices a symbol written on trees nearby.

Meanwhile, Divis begins speaking with birds and rabbits. He tries to find out what could be as powerful or more powerful than Veran (Mackenzie Crook). He looks into the rabbit’s eye and notices the symbol drawn on his head. This convinces Divis that the dead man sent the boy to get Cait. Mallin and Cait discuss their nonexistent homes and families. They to give it a day to see where things go. When Cait turns around, Mallin hangs the symbol on a nearby tree. Divis tries to come up with a solution to his current problem. He is concerned that Cait is going to tell Mallin everything. Cait and Mallin continue walking and Cait tells him about the prophecy along the way. It begins raining on Divis for a brief period and he is upset when it ends.

Mallin says Cait’s life isn’t her own and he can sympathize with that. He asks about the tricks Cait learned from Divis before claiming they might all be nonsense. He turns around with the intention of apologizing but Cait is nowhere to be found. He is alone and she speaks to him from a distance. Cait asks why he was in the river but he claims he doesn’t know. Cait doesn’t believe that so he says he might’ve been looking for something. She reappears behind him moments later. Phelan finds symbols in the woods while Divis tells the rabbit about the dead man using Mallin to get to Cait. He claims the dead man wants Cait to be forborn instead of reborn. In other words, she is going to be sacrificed. He wonders if he was destined to fail before Phelan walks by.

Phelan wants to talk about things but Divis won’t chat too much. Phelan asks to sit down before noticing the golden bow. He tells Divis about his children but Divis really doesn’t give a crap since he has bigger problems to deal with. Phelan notices the symbol on Divis’s head and says atonement. He claims that is where he is heading. Before Phelan leaves, he says hope is the daughter of a blind father. Divis tries to convince him to return but he refuses. Cait and Mallin find a place to stop for a rest. They pretend they’re in a castle so Cait lights a fire. We see an overhead and see that Cait is sitting in the dead man’s symbol. Divis tries to use some type of spell to escape while Cait watches Mallin catch fish with his hands.

He agrees to teach her to do the same but she isn’t very successful. After that, they walk along until Cait sees an image of Harka. That leaves her shocked. Later that night, Divis gets a visit from Quane (David Bradley). They chat about Veran and how much he used to like Divis. During this time, Mallin and Cait cook fish while Mallin starts regaining his memories. She says she is remembering a feeling she hasn’t felt in a very long a long time and that is not being afraid. Quane tells Divis that the dead man and Loka have joined forces. Quane says that they intend to destroy everyone who remains loyal to Veran. Quane intends to leave but Divis pleads with him to stay. Divis says he knows what comes next. The eagle doesn’t devour the maiden. It carries the maiden in its claws to the lake of tears.

Once there, she will be reborn. Divis is adamant that he is not done so Quane agrees to help him. He says he is going to send him to a place where he’ll need to be stronger than ever. He performs a ritual and sends Divis to the unknown land. Meanwhile, Mallin remembers what he was doing in the river. He was there to find Cait and mess things up. He jumped into the river so he could fulfill that mission. He begins laughing and speaking in Harka’s voice. Cait sneaks up behind him and performs some type of spell that removes the possession from Mallin. Divis wakes up with the bow and an arrow next to him. He grabs both on his way to his feet.

Britannia Review

I have to say that I’ve never been too impressed with Britannia but this was an excellent episode. This was likely the best episode of both seasons. Unfortunately, they did away with Mallin. That might ruin things on down the line. Then again, this is starting to feel like Britannia’s last season. I could be wrong but it seems like they’re going to end everything during the finale.

This is a show that some people will like and others will hate. It wasn’t my favorite show by any means but it wasn’t the worst I’ve seen either. This episode was very good though. It scores a 7.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Britannia are available on Reel Mockery.

I agree. This was the best episode so far of Britannia. It’s too bad it looks as if Mallin (Tom Rhys Harries) is not going to continue to be on the show (he was murdered at the end of episode 9 in season two) because I felt the relationship between he and Cait was very well done. Very touching and natural. Much more enjoyable to watch than the all the mayhem in the previous shows. I could get involved with the characters going it together through whatever comes next.

Unfortunately, after Mallin’s demise I am not sure of my own feelings for the series because if it continues on with the emphasis on Cait coming to some sort of power, with intrigue and murder well then that will lose me.

I thought the romance made the characters more personal and more emotionally involving. They came to life. That and the beautiful scenery as they meandered about together created an intimate situation. It was more appealing. Constant knocking off of characters in different brutal ways leaves me with no choice but to not be invested in the character because they will probably be destroyed anyway. What is the point.
