Britannia Season 2 Episode 4 Recap

As the episode begins, we watch as Phelan (Julian Rhind-Tutt) continues his journey. He travels over a long distance before arriving at a fishing hut. He makes small talk with the father before being allowed inside. Harka (Mackenzie Crook) eagerly awaits Phelan’s return. After the intro, Hella (Laura Donnelly) rides into the Roman encampment with the intention of negotiating with Aulus (David Morrissey). Aulus chats with Virus (Gershwyn Eustache) about finding Cait. Soon, Hella is allowed to speak with Aulus. Eventually, Hella tells him that she has something for him. It is a mile from here buried in the ground.

Hella will not tell Aulus who sent her but she wants her weight in silver for the secret. Aulus says no so she says twice her weight. Aulus tells Vitus to open the silver house. Meanwhile, Divis (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) argues with Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox). Divis says they’re going to a gorge and he blames Cait for blowing their last hideaway. Divis says nothing is safe since he had the deep dream last night. Eventually, he tells Cait he saw in that dream. He says that the vast green river was split in two and that scares him. Cait doesn’t care because she knows nothing about that river. They argue back and forth until Divis tells her about the Druid being at war.

Cait realizes how dire the situation is. The silver is weighed out for Hella before she tells him where to find the hidden object. She also tells him how to get in touch with her before telling her that the dead man says hello. They dig up the object and it is Willa (Jodie McNee). Harka gets a visit from Quane (David Bradley). Quane encourages Harka to stop this game before it is too late. Then, Harka speaks to him about giving him an apple when he was a young boy. Quane learns that Harka has a message for him. Aulus checks in on Willa in her cell.

Aulus says there is a man here who is there to get answers. He is going to torture Willa until she tells Aulus where the girl is. After that, Aulus speaks with Amena (Annabel Scholey) about the progress he has made. Torture man slices Willa’s fingers off. Amena tells Aulus she knows witchcraft so she should be allowed to speak with Willa. Phelan negotiates with the family of the three boys. He says they’ve been chosen by the gods. He also offers them a lot of money. Before too long, the boys follow Phelan away from their home. Amena has a nightmare regarding Veran before waking him. Torture man continues his work with Willa until she turns the tables on him.

Willa orders him to do something. He walks out into the camp, steps into a fire, and burns himself to death. Meanwhile, Phelan and the boys continue the journey. They stop and chat about the druids briefly. The boys admit they do not want to be there and would prefer to go home. Phelan claims he is doing great work for the gods and there is a bigger plan for them. Two soldiers discuss the fire before Willa is taken to Aulus. He knows she has strong power and he wants her to wish them on me. To do that, she will need something of his. Aulus chops off his finger and gives it to her. She performs a spell and drops to the ground while shaking.

Then, he looks up and finds out that two of the boys are already dead and strung up on trees. Willa tells Aulus about the lake in the west where Cait will likely go. Aulus thanks Willa and says she can leave. He says there will come a day in the future when he calls upon her. He wants her to be ready. Amena asks Aulus what her task is. She is told about a tribe in the west. She knows them since she was born there and her sister is queen. Amena is tired of long journeys and doesn’t want to see her sister.

Britannia Review

I believe Britannia has been marginally better this season than last. At the very least, the show isn’t obnoxious and annoying. I think the writers were spot identifying Veran as their best character so doubling him up was wise. There is a bit too much going on at once though. I find the story difficult to follow at times. It seems Aulus has gained a lot of allies early this season and he doesn’t appear to have much competition. Is that going to change? The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10.
