Brave New World Episode 8 Recap

As the episode begins, Helm Watson (Hannah John-Kamen) works with John (Alden Ehrenreich) and watches his memories. Helm says nobody here feels like that and John reminds her that they do not have mothers. John doesn’t feel better so Watson admits she cannot make his emotions disappear. She can paint over his old feelings before they watch as the director falls to his death. Helm wants to know what that was but John doesn’t want to tell her and he quickly tries to remove the optic from his eye. When he steps into the hallway, he is disoriented and begins seeing things. Then, Lenina Crowne (Jessica Brown Findlay) and Frannie (Kylie Bunbury) talk about Justin who has been sent to reconditioning. He was been privately obsessive so he was sent away. Lenina wonders how bad being banished would be but Frannie is terrified of the idea.

They watch feeds of John and believe he has gone mad. After the intro, Bernard Marx (Harry Lloyd) tries to visit John but instead speaks to Gary (Matthew Aubrey). Bernard tries to learn about John’s sexual connections from Gary but Gary says he only helps John. He tells Gary that he is a credit to his conditioning before suggesting they share the same purpose since they’re both there to help John. Then, Bernard asks Gary if John made sexual connections with Lenina. Gary doesn’t answer and says John makes pictures but the interrogation continues. Eventually, Gary hits his breaking points and admits that they have had lots of sex and Lenina visits every night for two hours. John exits the shower after Gary runs away.

Bernard suggests there might be something wrong with John’s Gamma and offers to replace him but John says he just gets moody sometimes. Then, he tries to return John’s optic but John doesn’t want it. Bernard tells him how you can see others using the optic. John asks Bernard if he was following him but Bernard says he was looking for him and wanted to know how he was doing. Marx tells John he took his advice and took Lenina on a date before claiming they had sex. He goes on to say that a Beta makes you feel like you’re the only one that matters even though they’ve been with others and will be with even more. Frannie catches Lenina walking away from the hatchery and stops her. Frannie claims that she isn’t interested in the savage because he is a test of the social body. Lenina wonders if Indra has all of the answers after all before Frannie reminds her that she shouldn’t say these things to others.

She claims that Lenina is troubled and she wonders if it is the savage. Meanwhile, John goes for a walk and sits on the bench outside. CJack60 (Joseph Morgan) joins him but says they’re not allowed to sit on the bench. After a little encouragement from John, Jack 60 sits down with him. Other Jacks surround them while the people on the upper levels stare. Jack 60 tells John that he is right and people are supposed to choose what they want. John tells him about Lenina sleeping with someone behind his back. Jill sits with them before John says the higher-ups will never have to suffer for any of it. He wonders if this place is so perfect why is it upside down. Then, he encourages the Epsilon to stare back and they do. Meanwhile, Helm watches more of John’s memories.

She begins crying before removing her wig. Henry Foster (Sen Mitsuji) can’t seem to forget what Mond (Nina Sosanya) told him. He goes over those events again and again before Bernard encourages him to banish John. Henry refuses because John is a distraction and they need a distraction right now. Henry wonders if the old director is going to come back as soon as he makes a mistake. He also says Mond is a fabrication and a dying woman hiding inside sprites and illusion. Henry tells Bernard about the rocket the old director arranged for the savage lands and says it is still sitting on the launch pad. John returns to his room and can’t find Gary anywhere. Lenina tries to contact him through his optic before she prepares to leave with Frannie. Lenina gives Frannie a book about the savages and tells her about the exhibitions.

Next, Mustafa speaks to Jane (Sophie McIntosh) about her plans for New London. Jane claims that the Savage is going to cause the fatal event. Mond warns her that ending the simulation means Jane will no longer exist but Jane refutes that and says they are her. She reminds Mond that she made her selfless. Mond tells her that she started with one Epsilon and then another before the Alpha counselor. She places another move on the board before claiming Jane did not account for the savage. Jane suggests she set the motions in action to bring John to New London and that he is the disruptor and the virus. Back in his room, John continues drawing on his walls before putting the optic in his eye. Then, he watches as a man approaches Lenina but he takes it out and throws it on the ground.

She stands up and tells them that it is her body before stepping aside. Frannie tries to tell her that this isn’t her stop but Lenina doesn’t care. Bernard goes to Helm and finds out that she has changed. Bernard wants to see John’s memories that she recorded but she doesn’t think that would be a good idea. Bernard grabs her and causes her to fall to the ground before taking John’s memories. He watches the memories and watches as the director falls to his death. Lenina finally makes it to John’s place and learns that Gary likely moved on. She tells John that she crossed a line tonight and the world didn’t end but John wants to talk about her date with Bernard.

They agree that it doesn’t matter. Lenina sits with John and begins kissing him before asking what it would take for them to leave. Then, John says what Lenina did with him tonight is what matters and he wants to know exactly what she did. As they have sex, Lenina tells and shows John what she did. John sits down and admits he saw Lenina through the optic interface. He tells her that she can’t feel this and that he is dealing with love. Lenina suggests John is in prison and tries to leave but he stops her momentarily. She gets up and rushes out of his room. Bernard visits Henry and admits that the director did not jump. Bernard encourages Henry to banish John because he can kill again. Henry agrees but they do not believe John is going to go willingly. Bernard gets angry at Henry and tells him to act his level but Bernard doesn’t seem to care.

She returns to John’s room but finds Frannie there. Frannie believes Lenina needs to be reconditioned and she encourages her friend to go. She tells Lenina she is a savage now and that she won’t let them banish her. Bernard tries to track down John who finds himself surrounded by Epsilons. Bernard arrives and it appears that the Epsilons are guarding John. Bernard tells John that it is time to go somewhere new so he can’t hurt anyone else. Brave New World Review

I’ve enjoyed every episode of Brave New World. Sure, I see flaws but I can easily ignore those. Brave New World has a very interesting story, compelling characters, and it is unlike anything else. I think I find the Epsilons, Jacks, and Jills more interesting than the other characters. We have one episode left and I am eager to see where things are going to go from here. I think the show has a lot left. I could see them making another season and I hope they do because I would watch it. This episode scores a 7.5 out of 10.
