They call mayday to get assistance. When they get back, Adam (Dan Renton Skinner) and the others tell Jaime that Maisie is gone. DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) worries about the upcoming visit. PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) receives a call from the harbor master who says the Tom Crocker has reported a body lost at sea.

Margo (Felicity Montagu) rushes out to see Jaime Martins (Danny Webb). DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi) tells Humphrey that they’re searching for a body. Humphrey says everyone thinks it’s suicide. Maisie was dying and her sons found a note. Margo tells Humphrey that Jaime is her ex-husband and he sometimes works on the Tom Crocker. Maisie Morgan was his sister. She married Sam Morgan 20 years ago. Her daughter Jenny is from a previous marriage. Humphrey and Esther speak to the sons and husband. They have a life raft on the back, but it is still sealed. Sam explains the doctors didn’t think Maisie had long left. Maisie loved the sea so she wanted to come out one last time.

Kelby joins Margo and tells her why he didn’t become a fisherman. Humphrey questions why Maisie tied her scarf to the rail and left her shoes. He wonders why she’d jump from the front when it’d be easier to jump from the side of the boat. He goes over the evidence he wants to collect including the boat’s movements. Esther thinks they should speak to her doctor. Jaime calls Jenny to tell her the bad news. Kelby continues talking to Margo who admits she thought it could be Jaime. Margo believes they got married too young and they still had a lot of growing up to do. Martha (Sally Bretton) and Anne (Barbara Flynn) talk about the incident. Anne says the Morgan family is Shipton Abbott. Maisie was ill, she lost her husband not long ago, and she fell out with her daughter Jenny.

Anne tells Martha to go on because she and Zoe (Melina Sinadinou) can cope. Margo visits Jaime. At the station, Kelby tells Esther and Humphrey that all the boats have a VMS tracking system. The boat’s position would’ve been recovered every two hours. The boat left at 4:30 a.m. before they went out about five miles and dropped their nets. They towed them for about three miles. Then, the movement was a bit erratic like they were searching before heading back. Esther gives Humphrey an update on the forensics. Martha interrupts to say they need to leave now for the home visit. Margo and Jaime talk about how Jenny handled the news. They also discuss how Jaime is grieving the loss. Sandra Morgan (Gem Carmella) says she was supposed to be seeing Maisie Thursday and taking her into town.

The sons argue about the will. Hannah (Amalia Vitale) tells Humphrey and Martha that they’re almost there. They’ll have the final panel meeting next week. Then, it’ll go to a senior manager for a decision. They discuss the boat and the fact that Martha and Humphrey are not married. Hannah admits the boat might limit the age of kids they can take. Humphrey says they have the house. Later, Martha tells Anne what Humphrey said about the house. They said they’d take it in turns. When Martha and Humphrey are in the house, they said Anne would be on the boat. They’ll have to swap soon so Hannah can see them in situ. Martha thought she’d start packing on the weekend. Anne is not happy about it. After Anne leaves, Zoe learns that Martha stole her house.

Esther tells Humphrey she has the fingerprints report. Maisie’s prints were on the bow of the ship where the scarf and shoes were found. They were also found at the port and starboard sides. Maisie’s consultant thought she had a few months or possibly weeks. She was fixated on getting her will changed. Margo heard about this. When Sam Sr. died, he left Maisie everything on the understanding that the fishing business would go to the boys when she died. The oldest, Adam, is insisting it’s family tradition for the business to go to the eldest son. Margo admits that is the tradition. Billy and young Sam always thought they would get a share because that’s what Maisie told them. Humphrey wonders if she had a chance to change the will before she killed herself. Sam speaks to someone on the phone and promises the money is coming.

Kelby, Margo, and Esther watch Humphrey conduct some type of experiment. He believes he found something in the reports Esther gave him. He shows them how Maisie would’ve been standing. To jump, she would’ve had to climb up. He questions why there are no prints showing the hand positions change. Humphrey says the prints are facing inward on the opposite side she boarded the boat. Kelby suggests she lowered herself down there, but Humphrey wonders if something else happened on the boat. He wants to speak to the sons and determine whether the suicide note is authentic. When they confront Adam, he suggests Maisie went out there with the intention of killing herself. Billy claims Maisie said she was leaving her will in four equal parts to him, Adam, Sam, and Jenny.

Adam was upset about it because he thought the business should be passed to the eldest son. Sam says Adam didn’t agree and he bullied her until she agreed to talk to the lawyers about changing the will. Sam says Billy was going to buy him out and he was going to start his own business doing tourist boat trips. He doesn’t know whether Maisie had actually changed the will. Before Margo leaves the station, she has to take one more call. Anne gets ready and tells Martha he is taking her out to dinner. She insists she is okay with swapping houses. She thinks it might be romantic to stay on the boat with Richard (Peter Davison). Anne gets upset when Martha asks whether the relationship might be moving too quickly. Margo hangs out with Jaime who sometimes wonders what would’ve happened if they had stayed together.

Jaime insists they were good together. Anne says hello to Margo when she enters with Richard. When they sit down, Richard tells Anne one of his favorite things about her is that she doesn’t act her age. Anne tells him she is now house-sharing with Martha and Humphrey. She mentions the lecture and Martha suggesting he is stringing her around for her fortune. Meanwhile, Humphrey does an experiment on the boat only to fall into the water. Richard tells Anne that his daughters coaxed him into signing up for the dating app. He admits she’s the best of a bad bunch. Anne talks about her date. Richard ends up touching her hand. Once Humphrey gets out of the water, he explains to Martha what he was doing. Martha admits she is worrying about everything.

Adam confronts Billy who knew Maisie didn’t change her will. Adam says she arranged to do it on the day Sandra was going to take her into town. He asks Billy what he did. Jenny (Jasmine Hyde) surprises Margo and Jaime. Once they get to Anne’s house, she invites Richard in for brandy. At the station, Humphrey learns that the marine unit had to quit for the night. Margo tells him that Jenny turned up last night. Humphrey wants to talk to her, but he needs to stop somewhere else on the way. Jenny tells Jaime she made a promise and that’s why she’s there. Esther and Humphrey interrupt so they can speak to Jenny. Jenny says her mom left home because she had an affair. She stayed with her and her new man for a while. Jenny calls that the worst time of her life.

Her dad was a mess because he couldn’t get over it. One night, Jenny got into an argument with her mom because of something the boys had done. When Maisie took their side, Jenny ran away to her dad’s place. One night, her dad collapsed. She phones her mom but she didn’t want to know. Maisie was at Sam’s 18th birthday so she told Jenny to phone an ambulance. Jenny’s dad was dead before he got to the hospital. Jenny told Maisie she’d see her next at her funeral. Uncle Jaime says Jenny and Maisie are just as stubborn as one another. Jenny insists she doesn’t care about the will because she doesn’t want anything from her mom. She’s there for the memorial services and it’s done after that. At the station, Kelby tells Humphrey that the handwriting samples matched so Maisie wrote the note.

The harbor master’s CCTV footage came through as well. Esther asks Margo about her date with Jaime. Margo insists it was just work. Humphrey notices something on the CCTV footage. There were five rescue workers until they reached Jaime. Humphrey suspects Maisie’s fingerprints were facing the other way because she was getting off the boat when it came back in. He explains that Maisie hid on the boat instead of jumping off. She slipped into a spare RNLI uniform to ensure she could climb off the boat and avoid attention. Then, she likely got into Jaime’s van. Humphrey explains that she faked her own death so she could see Jenny. Maisie meets Jenny who learns that she’s dying. She says she was trying so hard to build a new life back then.

Maisie wants to say goodbye. Humphrey and Esther make it just in time to see them on the beach together. As they approach, Jaime asks them to leave them alone because this has been a long time coming. They watch Jenny and Maisie from a distance as they begin hugging. During the ceremony, Humphrey tells Esther that the will never got changed so they’ll all get an equal share. Jenny doesn’t want her share so the others are arguing about what to do with it. They approach Margo who complains about Jaime lying to her again. Anne tells Martha how things went with Richard. Anne reminds her she spent most of her life supporting her. A bit later, Martha tells Humphrey that Anne doesn’t think she’s supportive enough about Richard.

Beyond Paradise Review

The third episode of Beyond Paradise’s second series was enjoyable enough despite not being groundbreaking. The conclusion of the possible murder investigation was a bit predictable. Most probably won’t see the whole Jenny angle coming into play, but it’s easy to predict that the suicide was staged. Nevertheless, this made sense and it was different so at least they’re not rehashing the same stories yet.

Some of the personal stories are compelling enough to keep viewers coming back week after week. For instance, Anne’s relationship with Richard is compelling and it’s also interesting to see how Martha handles it. Humphrey and Martha’s relationship is also evolving with the possibility of marriage, but it’s baffling that they didn’t realize living on a boat might make fostering a bit more difficult.

That’s probably not well conceived considering Martha and Humphrey are already busy people. Are they even going to have time for a kid? Nevertheless, the episode was enjoyable enough to watch without becoming frustrated or annoyed. It scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Beyond Paradise are available on Reel Mockery here.
