BBC announces series 2 of The Gold to tell the rest of the Brink’s-Mat story

The BBC has announced in a news release that The Gold will be returning for a follow-up season. The factual drama is based on the 1980 Brink’s-Mat robbery and the events that followed. The hit drama is set to return to BBC One and the iPlayer for a second series. The first episode of series one accumulated 8.7 million viewers making it one of the top five most watched new dramas of 2023 in the United Kingdom across all platforms and channels.

Some of the standout characters from series one will be returning. Hugh Bonneville will be back as Brian Boyce while Charlotte Spencer and Emun Elliott will be reprising their roles as Nicki Jennings and Tony Brightwell respectively. Furthermore, Tom Cullen (John Palmer), Stefanie Martini (Marnie Palmer), and Sam Spruell (Charlie Miller) will be back for series two.

After the conviction of some involved in the robbery, the police realized that those criminals only had a portion of the loot. Series two will cover the other half of the story, the remaining gold, and the fortune it created. The series will follow investigators are they attempt to solve the longest and costliest investigation in the Metropolitan Police’s history.

Series two of The Gold will consist of six 60-minute episodes which were commissioned by Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt. Filming is expected to begin in January with additional casting announced soon.
