BBC Announces Lead Roles In New Comedy Series ‘Daddy Issues’

On December 11, 2023, BBC announced that The Walking Dead’s David Morrissey will play the lead role, Malcolm, in “Daddy Issues”. Morrissey will play alongside Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, Living).

Daddy Issues is set in Stockport, Manchester, where Malcolm and his daughter, Gemma are challenged with sharing a flat.

Daddy Issues follows Gemma who is a party girl. She lives for the weekend when she can party in Stockport, Manchester. Her life will change dramatically when she joins the mile-high club with a random man on her way back home. She’s pregnant and her inept father is the only one there to support her.

Gemma has found herself isolated with only her father for company. Although her father is kind-hearted, he just happens to be useless. Malcolm (David Morrissey) is incompetent to the point that he can’t load a washing machine or boil an egg. After the collapse of his family, Malcolm has been living in a bedsit for divorced men.

As a result, Malcolm moves in with his daughter, Gemma. While Gemma needs support at a critical time in her life, Malcolm will need help microwaving rice without causing an explosion and changing the Wi-Fi password.

At its core, Daddy Issues is the typical odd-couple comedy about two deeply flawed characters who just happen to be a father and his daughter. Throughout the series, there will be failed romances, dating disasters, and even a sociopathic teacher. Daddy Issues is written by Danielle Ward and stars Aimee Lou Wood and David Morrissey.

BBC expects to announce full casting and schedule at a later time.

Daddy Issues consists of six 30-minute episodes. It is a Fudge Park production for BBC Three and the BBC iPlayer. The series was commissioned by the Director of Comedy Commissioning at the BBC, Jon Petrie. Catherine Morshead and Damon Beesley will be directing the series while the producer is Lynn Roberts. Executive producers include Phil Gilbert, Aimee Lou Wood, David Morrissey, Danielle Ward, and Damon Beesley. Fremantle will be handling global sales.
