As this episode of A Discovery Of Witches begins, Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) uses her magic with a pregnancy book with her on the bed. Once she finishes the spell, she goes downstairs and runs into Gallowglass (Steven Cree) along the way. She gets a drink from Fernando (Olivier Huband) before joining Phoebe (Adelle Leonce) who is busy looking for TJ Weston. Diana wonders if he doesn’t want to be found. Phoebe says there was a TJ Weston who was a prolific composer during the early nineties, but he just vanished into thin air. When Sarah (Alex Kingston) says it is a needle in a haystack, Diana reveals she has been working on a locator spell. However, they’re going to need to find a coven because they need a witch for each element. Phoebe wonders if that is a good idea since Peter Knox (Owen Teale) might hear about it. She also worries they’ll have trouble finding witches.

When Gallowglass and Fernando hear about her idea, they agree it is too dangerous. Nevertheless, Diana doesn’t care because she has come too far to give up now. After the intro, Fernando tells Gallowglass no good is going to come of this and he should get on with his own life. He tells Gallowglass that he deserves happiness too. He questions that before heading back inside. In New Orleans, Matthew (Matthew Goode) remembers talking to Diana about Lucas. He has a flashback of his father telling him his conscience is a weakness. He also remembers his conversation with Ransome (Parker Sawyers) and Baldwin (Peter McDonald) telling him to kill Jack. In South Kensington, Miriam (Aiysha Hart) tries to get in touch with Matthew who isn’t answering his phone. Christopher (Ivanno Jeremiah) says he has compared Ransome’s samples to the ones they already had so he was there all night.

He says they’ve been assuming the vampire DNA completely overwrites the existing human DNA during transformation. If that was true, Matthew and Ysabeau’s genomes would have more similarities. During Matthew’s rebirth, something already in his non-coding, human DNA reacted to the new genetic information flooding his system. Miriam believes vampire genes are brutal and push everything out of the way, but Chris says otherwise. He says Matthew has ingredients from his human parents and what he inherited from Ysabeau. Matthew possessed the triggers the blood rage needed to express itself. They agree it was more complicated than they thought, but they need to tell Matthew regardless. Diana walks through London in hopes of finding witches. Sarah asks Gallowglass if he can help her. He says Diana was here just a few months ago while he hasn’t been there in 400 years.

When Diana uses her magic and transforms the buildings into older buildings, a woman approaches and welcomes her. As she leads them, she talks about Goody Alsop’s legacy being as powerful now as it has always been. There are three dozen members. Diana begins telling Linda Crosby (Shobu Kapoor) what she needs help with. After Linda learns what she is trying to do with the locator spell, she promises to do everything they can to help. The also says Tamsin will help. Diana is introduced to Michael who is a fire witch. Next, we join Satu (Malin Buska) in Venice as she approaches Gerbert (Trevor) and tells him to beware of the witch with the blood of the lion and the wolf who will destroy the children of the night. He is asked if he thinks the prophecy is about Diana Bishop. Gerbert doesn’t answer and instead urges her to enjoy herself for once.

When Domenico (Gregg Chillingirian) asks Benjamin (Jacob Ifan) if he is having fun, Ben says there is more warm blood in this room than he expected. Domenico says Gerbert thinks humans have a role in preserving his collection. Ben walks outside to see if Satu has reconsidered his proposal. Satu says she looked inside Diana. Although she has power, she doesn’t know how to use it. She can’t use it like Satu can now. She goes on to say everyone thinks Diana is the witch from the prophecy and destined to surpass all of them. Satu wonders who that witch actually is. Meanwhile, Diana and the witches perform the spell to locate TJ Weston. Once they finish the spell, the paper in front of Diana has the coordinates to TJ Weston (Phaldut Sharma). Meanwhile, Matthew hangs out with Ransome, Jack (Toby Regbo), Marcus (Edward Bluemel), and others.

Miriam arrives unexpectedly and takes Matthew inside where she complains about him not answering his texts. She tells him that the samples support Chris’s theory that blood rage is a developmental anomaly and the blood rage appears to be activated by something in the human non-coding DNA. Matthew listens as Miriam says there may never be a cure for blood rage. The human genes hold the key to curing it. Then, we jump over to The Cotswolds. As Gallowglass, Diana, and Sarah approach a home, Diana gives Sarah a defense spell since they don’t know who is inside. Gallowglass says he can hear a heartbeat and it is in distress so they should stand back. Instead of busting through the door, Diana recommends going through the open door nearby. They step inside and find a man hiding behind a desk.

He claims Timothy Weston is not there. Diana says they believe Weston has a page from a book that belonged to Dr. John Dee. Since he doesn’t want a vampire in his house, Gallowglass agrees to leave once he puts the bat down. Sarah and Diana follow TJ to another room where he plays the piano for them. He tells them he studied music at the Metropolitan Conservatoire. After Diana asks about the page they’re looking for, TJ reveals he knows it is a tree. He used to like looking at it because of the way the branches intertwined. He knows it is made from the skin of his ancestors. He claims it is like having his family in his house. Diana says they’d like to see it. TJ says they can do that if they can find it before laughing. Weston says everything has to stay as it is and he won’t let them use music in his house. Diana decides to leave. Once Diana steps outside, she tells Gallowglass he has the page, but it is the only thing he has left.

When Gallowglass offers to talk to him, Diana says they’re not going to force him because they’re not the Congregation. He thought she’d know better than that. She says she can do this on her own. Gallowglass knows and says she had the same look of determination on her face on her first day at Yale. He says Philippe asked him to look out for her and make sure she made it to Matthew. Gallowglass says he gladly did it for centuries and she shouldn’t apologize for something she had no power to prevent. He always knew she wasn’t meant to be his although she says she couldn’t have asked for a better guardian. He says Philippe always gave you a job you couldn’t refuse. When she thanks him and walks away, he says it costs you a piece of your soul. Miriam joins Matthew outside and says this isn’t really about finding a cure for blood rage. She believes it is about Matthew feeling guilty for the things he did and can’t change.

She thinks he fears what he could do next. Miriam insists he can’t do that anymore. Miriam reminds him they don’t know if the twins have blood rage or whether they’re vampires. Matthew is told they’ll find a way to ensure the twins live long, fulfilling lives even if they have blood rage. Diana needs him to be with her for the birth and he can’t do that from New Orleans. He is told he’ll fail as a father if he decides to stay here. Matthew immediately calls Baldwin to tell him they need to meet. Diana stops her Tesla and says she is going in on her own. Before she goes inside, she tells Gallowglass she is glad he told her. She knocks on the door and tells Agatha Wilson (Tanya Moodie) there is something she needs her help with. Peter Knox goes to the witches’ coven and tells Linda that he can feel her magic. She warns him that she is under Father Hubbard’s protection although Knox doesn’t seem to care.

Linda keeps nagging him until he turns around and uses his magic to lock her in another room. Then, he uses his magic to find out where Diana went. Diana takes Agatha to TJ’s house in hopes of convincing him to hand over the page. She says the book is their chance to prove that demons matter before complaining about the centuries of prejudice they’ve faced. She says she lost her family because she took a stand against bigotry. Once Diana speaks, Timothy says he already knows she is the one who will show how it all began. He also thinks she is the one who can put a stop to it for once and for all. He gets the page for them seconds later and Diana thanks him. Agatha tells TJ he has a whole community out there although he isn’t sure if he is ready. She agrees to go at his pace. As they leave, Diana says they can now heal the book of life and find the answers.

Agatha thought they had progressed past this. She wonders how long it’ll be before the Congregation realizes it isn’t just witches and vampires. Diana says this is why she wants to repeal the covenant, but they’re going to need a revolution. She stops when she feels pain and says she thinks they’re coming. Baldwin meets with Matthew and immediately asks what the secrecy is all about. He asks Matthew if he believes he can avoid his obligation by developing his own scion. Matthew believes Philippe would agree they have a right to carve out their own path, but Baldwin reminds him Philippe isn’t here. He claims he has the right to seize all of Matthew’s assets and throw him out of Sept-Tours. Matthew doesn’t mind because he has everything he needs. He is asked if he is just going to change the way the family has operated from the beginning when she has 50 years left of her life at best. Matthew made a promise to his father which he intends to keep.

When Matthew is asked what it was like seeing him again, he tells Baldwin it was what you’d expect. Regardless, Baldwin isn’t willing to give Matthew his support to build a scion. He refuses to respect his decision. Meanwhile, Diana is rushed back to the flat so she can give birth. Fernando alerts Matthew who hurries back to the house to be with her. Sarah runs a bath for Diana before she asks about Matthew. Sarah reminds her she was with Rebecca when she gave birth so they can do this together. When Matthew and Marcus rush in, Miriam gives Marcus encouragement saying they’ve done this many times. Agatha tells Miriam she needs to visit a friend. Matthew joins Diana before Marcus enters and learns they’re four minutes between contractions. While Diana struggles upstairs, Fernando brings Gallowglass a drink outside. Gallowglass says Matthew will never leave her side again. Diana successfully gives birth and cuddles her baby. They agree she is perfect.

Miriam gives Agatha updates on the phone as Diana delivers baby two. Matthew tells Diana that Philippe would be screaming in the streets because he is so proud of them. Diana wants to call one baby Philippe while Matthew says the other baby looks like Rebecca. Marcus goes downstairs to tell the others they have a healthy boy and a healthy girl. While Marcus and Phoebe make out, Gallowglass walks away from the crowd. Gallow leaves on his motorcycle without anyone noticing. When Agatha arrives at Timothy’s place, she hears him screaming inside. She finds that he has been attacked. Agatha comforts him and tells him he isn’t alone.

 

A Discovery Of Witches Review

We are now through episode four of the last season of A Discovery of Witches and I can’t help but feel nothing of significance has happened. In fact, I would agree with anyone who said this was the weakest, silliest episode yet. Matthew spent most of the time sitting on a porch in New Orleans while Diana conveniently found a coven to help her cast the locator spell she just created. While Diana knew Peter Knox would follow her to the coven, she didn’t think about protecting TJ Weston. Peter Knox’s actions were too predictable so we knew what was coming.

More needs to happen to make this a worthwhile series with a memorable finale, but I am sadly starting to feel like it is going to go out with a whimper. The whole storyline with Gallowglass was silly like they just threw it in there out of nowhere. Some of the acting at the witch’s coven was less than stellar with the characters just going through the motions. The show has gone overboard with guaranteeing inclusion while the story and action have taken a back seat.
