HTGAWM: Mama’s Here Now Review

Nate Lahey

When the episode opens, we see Nate Lahey (Billy Brown) being forced to strip, at the police station. Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) questions Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) about Sam’s ring and thanks him for hiding it in the woods. Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) celebrates his month long sobriety, while Nate is decontaminated. The police contact Rebecca Sutter (Katie Findlay), since she had called Nate’s phone in the past. Meanwhile, Annalise’s mother, Mama Keating (Cicely Tyson) arrives, at her home. At first, she is confused, as a patient, by Bonnie (Liza Weil) and Frank, but is eventually allowed to see Annalise (Viola Davis). She instantly begins outlining Anna’s problems, before belittling her daughter.

Afterwards, Wes Gibbins (Alfred Enoch) alerts the others of Rebecca’s calls to Nate. He suggests it is no big deal, since Anna can prep her for an interview, with police. Bonnie enters and informs them they have a new case, which she will be leading. The group is introduced to a nurse, Jolene Samuels (Mageina Tovah), who is accused of raping one of her patients, Chad Manning (Chris Kos). Bonnie defends Jolene in court and insists Chad is only after money. Bonnie makes a mistake and says the jury should find Jolene guilty, before correcting herself. It would seem Jolene is in big trouble.

Next, Bonnie is grilled, by a hospital staff member, who suggests losing the case will open them up to a massive lawsuit. Dr. Annabelle Grimes (Teresa Haung) is questioned and admits Chad had a large bruise on his left testicle, which results from a sexual attack. Bonnie is able to blame the bruising on blood thinners. She tells the students about a star witness, who claims to have witnessed the attack and orders the students to find a way to discredit them. Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) asks Frank how they’re going to get Nate out of jail, before they encounter the witness, Miss Rosalynn. Her boyfriend, James Smalley, is questioned in court. Bonnie makes Smalley admit to suffering a TIA that day, which likely hindered his memory.

Annalise, or Anna Mae, continues to argue, with her mother, until she is asked, whether or not she killed Sam, but she doesn’t answer. In court, it comes out that Jolene was a user of a sexual Internet forum and used the username FreakyNightingale. One of her posts admits to having sex, with one of her patients. Jolene tells Bonnie and the students about her religious parents and her humiliation. Bonnie goes off on the students and gives them orders. Wes finally gets to speak, with Anna. He tells her about the cops calling Rebecca. Anna continues to convince Wes that he has everything under control. Rebecca is interviewed, by Detective Claire Bryce (April Parker-Jones). She lies and insists she turned down Nate’s offers to help bring down Sam. She also says Nate asked her to plant evidence in Sam’s house.

Connor and his boyfriend discover that Chad Manning is homosexual. In court, Manning admits that he posted the photos on Humpr, which is a gay dating app. However, the judge throws the questioning out. Bonnie is forced to settle, with Manning, but she refuses. Laurel catches Michaela looking at Nate’s arrangement schedule and tells her not to do anything stupid. Next, Michael flirts with ADA Orrin Driver (Brett Zimmerman), in order to learn more about Nate’s case. Michaela tells all of the other students about Rebecca’s statements to the police.

Rudy Walters

Wes goes to the police and questions about Rudy Walters. He learns that Rudy was picked up on a 5503, or disorderly conduct, before being shipped to a mental hospital. Annalise continues arguing with her mother, who insists Sam got what he deserved. The pair discuss their history of being raped, before Anna tells her mother to go home. Asher Millstone (Matt McGorry) discovers that Manning had been making repeated visits to the hospital’s legal floor. Bonnie suggests the hospital representative, David Tucker (Mark Famiglietti), has something malicious going on, with Manning.

The hospital’s lawyer, David, is required to go on record and admits to a 500,000 dollar deal. Bonnie reveals that David and Manning are lovers and attempted to manipulate the hospital, in order to get rich.  With the new information, the charges are dropped against Jolene. Afterwards, Asher congratulates her, before the pair kiss. The pair get hot and heavy, while Frank watches. Connor finally introduces Oliver to all of the other students. Wes gets a call from Rebecca, before being pulled aside, by Laurel. He tells her about Rebecca lying to him about Rudy, who had a drug overdose and not a nervous breakdown. He reveals it happened on the same night Lila was murdered. Wes begins doubting Sam’s guilt and Nate’s imprisonment.

Mama Keating tells Annalise about letting Uncle Clyde burn alive in their family house, after he fell asleep, with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. She insists Anna had her reasons and did what she had to do. Meanwhile, Oliver hits on Connor, who insists they wait, until he is sober. Laurel and Wes head to the hospital in hopes of getting access to Rudy. They gain access, with a fake ID. Meanwhile, Michaela attends Nate’s arraignment, when Annalise shows up. Anna insists it is her job to fix the injustice.

How to Get Away with Murder Rudy Walters

We’re finally introduced to Rudy Walters, as Laurel and Wes enter his room. They discover scratching on his wall, which is similar to the one in Wes’s room. Annalise confronts Nate and questions why he killed Sam. She thanks him and insists Sam deserved the grave, before leaving. When she leaves, Nate reveals a note, which insists he fire his lawyer. It also includes a phone number. Laurel attempts to get Rudy to speak. Wes shows him a picture of Rebecca. Rudy only says “wet”. Wes insists it means the water tank. Meanwhile, Rebecca tracks Wes’s phone and discovers he is at the Enfield Hospital.

Review

There may have been a little too much going on in Mama’s Here Now, but it brought out a lot of insightful and revealing information. At first, I thought the show might begin to lose its flavor, with the death of Sam, but the mystery continues to deepen, while growing stranger. Perhaps Sam wasn’t the killer all along? Maybe Rebecca has been pulling the wool over their eyes this entire time? It was also nice to see Bonnie step up and finally be a court room success. This was an excellent episode, which deserves an 8 out of 10.
