Wolf Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

Death Roll – As the fifth episode of Wolf begins, Beca Van Der Bolt receives a visit from someone in a hazmat suit because her home has bugs. The person in the hazmat suit eventually stabs her in the stomach with a knife before she runs upstairs and hides under the bed. The killer grabs her moments later. Jack Caffrey (Ukweli Roach) approaches the present. When he opens the box, he finds a RoboMajor which was manufactured in 2004 or six years after his brother went missing. It wasn’t Ewan’s. Everything he’s left before has been Ewan’s or something Jack was supposed to think was his.

Jack tells Maia Lincoln (Sian Reese-Williams) where the box was found. Maia thinks the whole thing is weird although Jack reminds her that his neighbor is doing it. Driscoll (Amanda Drew) catches Jack at the station trying to run fingerprints. Before he leaves, he notices that Ella Ward’s case is now a homicide. Driscoll tells him that she died of a subdural hematoma. Although there was no weapon at the scene, the skull fracture is acute. They believe he pushed her causing her to fall and hit her head. The husband has an alibi, but they will be able to pick it apart. Molina (Iwan Rheon) and Honey (Sacha Dhawan) question whether their boss is messing with them.

Molina suggests he is testing them. Honey worries what’ll happen to them if they don’t pass the test. Molina confesses that he has never killed anyone. Honey insists they have to complete the job today even if the landline isn’t working. Erin (Karen Ascoe) shows Jack the paperwork for all the ring engravings. He goes through them all but doesn’t find any James married to someone named Matilda. Jack suggests neither the husband nor wife ordered it themselves. He takes a stack of files since it could be any of them. Honey crawls over to Oliver (Owen Teale) to tell him today is the day. They take Oliver out to the car before Matilda (Juliet Stevenson) hears the car drive away.

She yells to Lucia (Annes Elwy) to tell her that they’ve left with Oliver. Matilda is confident Oliver will find a way to get them out of this, but Lucia isn’t sure about that. Jack goes looking for the walking man (Tim Treloar) who tells him he shouldn’t be out there. The man confirms he got the information about Jack’s brother. As for the dog, Jack says he has a list of names but it’ll take weeks to call them. Jack pleads with him to hand over the information, but the man won’t until he deals with the dog. Molina hits a stone while trying to back out of the drive. He temporarily gets a signal. Jack begins hearing shooting. He runs over and sees a group of people setting up for a party of sorts.

Jack calls Prody (Ciaran Joyce) to talk to him about the river people. Prody explains they have a camp out there by the water. While he doesn’t know when they moved out there, they’ve been expanding for a couple of years now. Jack admits it never made sense to him that Bones’s raves just stopped. He wonders if they didn’t stop and they just set up a camp. Molina and Honey try to find a signal. Once they find one, they tell Oliver that he has to call the bank. Lucia yells at her mother to leave her behind if she gets the opportunity to escape. She knows she isn’t what Matilda wants and never has been. Matilda tries to change her mind.

Arthur tells Oliver that he’ll need to verify his identity because it is such a substantial transaction. After answering the questions, Oliver quickly tries to tell the man what is happening only for Honey to hit him. Jack visits Maia to ask what she knows about the river people. Prody told Jack that they were on Maia’s radar. Maia explains that the river people are tied to weapon sales in Cardiff. There might be more than handguns, but they’re not sure and there isn’t enough intel to warrant action. Maia asks if this is about the donkey pitch. She tells him it is another thing to start opening doors that the Newport County Police have chosen to leave shut.

Maia says there is no connection between the donkey pitch murders and the river people. Before Jack leaves, she tells him that the suspect’s name is Elis Hennion. Lucia and Matilda hear a vehicle returning. After tying Oliver up, Molina and Honey discuss their next move. There has been no transfer of funds and that was the main thing they were supposed to do. They begin worrying that the boss is going to kill them so Honey says they should leave now. When Molina checks on Matilda, she tells him he doesn’t want to do this because he isn’t the bad one. Jack finds out that Elis Hennion is a 25-year-old Cardiff native with a long history of crimes.

A woman named Barbara Bell has a restraining order against him. When they speak to her, Barbara says she is trying to get her daughter back. She is with Bones. Jack asks the parents to watch the video and they confirm it is Jessica. The man in the hazmat suit is Bones according to Jessica’s father. Her parents do not know his real name since they never met him. When Bones came into Jessica’s life, everything changed. Once she turned 18, there was nothing they could do about it. As they continue speaking, Jack notices some guy outside. Jessica’s father says he went onto their property and tried to get her back only for Jessica to turn him away.

Any time someone steps onto their territory, they retaliate by sending Elis. They explain that he starts by following you before it escalates. These people enjoy scaring others. The river people are more formally organized than Jack may imagine. Jessica’s mom calls the organization a cult. She goes on to say everyone worships Bones. She even suspects they’ve been violent together. Molina is worried about leaving the family tied up because the bank may not call the police. They hear the doorbell. Honey warns Molina that they can’t have any screw-ups. He orders him to go upstairs and gag the family. Molina is told to follow Honey’s lead when he comes back.

Before Honey can answer the door, he trips and falls on the rug. Jack tells Gareth Matthew (Kai Owen) that Hugo and Sophie were on Adderall and the man behind the raves was named Bones. Gareth doesn’t remember any kids mentioning that name though. Jack suggests the parents never said anything about Bones because they didn’t know the raves were linked to the murders. He believes Bones had been harassing Sophie and Hugo in the weeks leading up to the murder. Jack wants to question Bones at the camp on the River Wye. Gareth warns him that he’ll create a headache for everyone if he bothers them and they spread out into the city.

He orders Jack to stop the investigation which will undermine public confidence in the police. Gareth tells him to drive back to London. Jack gets back into his vehicle. Prody is surprised Gareth doesn’t see what they do. Jack wants to take him home because he doesn’t want him to risk his career over this. Honey answers the door and invites two police officers inside. Molina joins them seconds later. Honey claims he is Kiernan Anchor-Ferrers and Molina is his fiancé Bardo. He tries to explain why his father isn’t there and how he wanders now. They’re asked how well they know local resident Beca Van Der Bolt who has gone missing. The detective explains that she is the housekeeper there.

A family member reported her missing and there are signs of a struggle at her residence. The detective asks if they’ve seen anything out of the ordinary. Molina begins talking about the word clairvoyant. He goes on to say he had a feeling that made him feel suspicious. Molina admits there was no particular reason for it though. Before they leave, DI Honey (Rhys ap William) and DS Molina (Nathan Sussex) formally introduce themselves and give them cards. When he is driving alone, Jack gets the feeling he is being followed. It appears to be the same vehicle from Jessica’s parent’s house. The man, Elis, gets out when he finds Jack’s car abandoned.

He looks under Jack’s vehicle before finding a gun cock nearby. Jack catches him by surprise and subdues him. He asks Elis to go back to his friends and tell them that he was scared off. Elis doesn’t want to mess with Bones. Jack leaves him on the ground and drives away. Then, he goes down to the compound where he finds multiple people shooting targets. He is approached by two men with guns. Jack sends a message to Paul Prody before Jessica comes out to say Jack knows her. He hands over his phone before walking with her. Someone in a hazmat suit sees them walk inside. Jessica gets them shots.

She explains that she let him in because Elis told her who he was. Jessica suspects he’ll report back to her parents so she wants him to watch her tonight and tell them she is happy. She wants them to let her go. Jessica shows Jack how much the others there love her. Jack soon learns that he has been drugged. He stumbles towards the water where people are chanting “feed the croc”. Bones throws several fish in the water for it. Jessica uses a swing over the water that slowly lowers her. Jack worries she is going to fall and she does. He jumps in to save her only to see more crocodiles around them. After she swims up, Jack sees his neighbor and a crocodile attacks.

Moments later, police have raided the camp. Gareth asks Jack if he is okay. Jack learns he was wrestling fake crocodiles and Prody broke his ankle. Prody pulled him out of the water. Gareth says Bones’s real name is Jacob Adley and he was in police custody in Bristol at the time of the donkey pitch murders. Jack gets dropped off at Maia’s place later. They end up having sex. Molina tells Honey that the police left and didn’t come back. Honey believes the boss sent them and they weren’t real cops. Molina is scared to go downstairs to get his bag so Honey rushes down there instead. Once he gets down there, he starts gagging.

Honey finds a dead body. It likely belongs to Beca. When he gets back, Molina asks if he has figured out who he is yet.

Wolf Review

The fifth episode of Wolf was good although there were many scenes that felt a little pointless and possibly even too far over the top. Each episode has ended with a surprise and this one was no different since we learned more about Molina’s true identity. Certain things are hard to fault now because Molina could’ve been setting things up from the beginning though.

Then again, this isn’t a series that viewers will be able to take seriously. Instead, it is a whole new experience with a lot of quirkiness and comedy. This also isn’t a show that everyone is going to enjoy because some won’t enjoy the lack of seriousness. If viewers accept Wolf for what it is, they may very well enjoy the story and the odd characters.

If there is one big complaint I have with the serious, it would be the runtime and the fact that there are six episodes. In each episode, it has felt like there are long periods where the story doesn’t move forward and some scenes are regularly repeated. Nevertheless, the series is different and I am interested in seeing what happens now that Molina has revealed himself to Honey.

The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of Wolf can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising on Reel Mockery here.
