Scary Man – As the third episode of Wolf begins, DI Maia Lincoln (Sian Reese-Williams) and others search in the middle of the night five years earlier. There were approximately 100 kids, but they scattered when the police arrived. The cops were waiting for the lights to be fixed before searching the ground. Maia wants them to do it now. Prody tells Maia that he had a paramedic friend who quit when she had enough. It had something to do with a man in a bathtub that they called Dead Man Talking.
Maia claims that the man said he’d warned her. As they continue looking around, Maia finds herself standing among a handful of snakes. DI Honey (Sacha Dhawan) cuts the rope causing Matilda (Juliet Stevenson) to crash to the floor. Molina (Iwan Rheon) records everything on an action camera. Honey says it is time before telling Matilda that they need her to do something for them. He tells Molina they maybe should help them figure out who they might be. Maia talks to Jack Caffrey (Ukweli Roach) about whether he is really going to investigate the Donkey Pitch murders.
She knows he is already looking at a possible suspension. Jack begins explaining why he wants to check into the murders. He starts with the dog Bear. Jack can’t tolerate the idea that something will happen tomorrow and he didn’t do anything to stop it. Honey asks Matilda to tuck her blouse up into her bra. Once she does that, Honey asks her to wiggle her trousers down a bit. In order to explain who they are, he is going to need access to her abdomen. Honey asks how much Matilda heard about the way Sophie and Hugo died. He wants her to consider how they know such details as he begins drawing where the cuts were.
Molina thinks they just figured out that it was them on the donkey pitch. Jack calls Erin (Karen Ascoe) who works at the jewelry shop where the ring was made. He asks whether she can find out more about the engraving on the ring. She admits her father’s company didn’t use computers so they’d have to search manually for the information he needs. Matilda is returned to the room and restrained. Jack calls about arranging a prison visit with Minnet Kable. Then, he listens to interviews Maia and DI Gareth Matthews (Kai Owen) conducted regarding the murder. Eventually, one girl tells them that Sophie and Hugo hung out with Emily and Max.
The four of them did everything together. Bethany (Emma Cooney) tells them what the other kids thought of them. If there is anything to know, Emily and Max would know it. Molina and Honey clean up the intestines. Then, they set up a trap in hopes of getting the dog back. As the interview continues, Emily tells Maia and Gareth that she can’t imagine why anyone would want to hurt Sophie or Hugo. She insists they weren’t hiding anything. Jack visits Emily who reminds him that she and Max have alibis for the night of the murders. Jack just wants her to walk him through what happened. Emily says she and Max argued with them a couple of weeks before they died.
As a result, they were giving each other the silent treatment. Jack mentions that he looked at her Instagram account that she deleted in 2019. He suggests she really doesn’t like trans people. Jack suspects she was using study drugs so he wants to know who was supplying them. Emily says they were using Adderall which Sophie had bought for them. Although she never mentioned a name, Sophie had a connection in Cardiff. When Honey wakes up, he notices an odd smell. He looks around until he finds a box full of Matilda’s clothes for donation. Later, he is wearing her robe and Molina is handcuffed in the kitchen.
After going outside, Honey returns with a security sign and asks what it was doing outside the family’s house. He isn’t happy that they could have been recorded, but Molina isn’t worried since there is no Wi-Fi and nothing is being uploaded to the cloud. Honey wants to find and destroy the cameras. Once he grabs a knife, he tells Lucia (Annes Elwy) that they’re going to play a little game. Honey is going to ask her and Matilda a question. If they have the same answer, Matilda will get a pillow. Otherwise, Matilda will go into surgery right away. Honey asks where the cameras are. Lucia says they don’t use them anymore since her parents put them away ages ago.
She goes on to say she believes they’re in a box in the basement. Oliver (Owen Teale) also says the cameras are in a box in the basement. He explains that they never could get the signal working to send anything to the cloud so the cameras aren’t in use. Honey opens his shirt and removes the bandage on his chest. Oliver tells him about the transplant. They move to Matilda to ask her about the cameras. Matilda says she has no idea where they are because Oliver deals with that sort of thing. She eventually suggests they’re in the basement in a box somewhere. Honey agrees to give her the pillow before he leaves with Molina.
They find the cameras in the basement. Honey is convinced the security sign wasn’t there when they arrived though. Molina thinks it had to be there though. Jack gets in touch with Gareth who knows what he is up to. Although he is sure it was Minnet Kable, he hasn’t looked into any drug connections. Gareth doubts they were deep enough into drugs to get murdered for it. Jack asks which fib would’ve known the most about the drug scene back then. Gareth agrees to put him in touch with a Sergeant who should know something. Later, Jack meets Prody and congratulates him on becoming a detective.
Jack tells Prody (Ciaran Joyce) about the case and says the victims were into Adderall they got in Cardiff. Prody can’t remember anything about any study drugs. When Jack asks if he remembers anything that was off, Prody remembers the snakes. He takes Jack to the house in question but admits he can’t say for sure that Sophie and Hugo were there that night. Prody tells him about a girl who broke her foot while running away. Although the others thought it was a rave that got out of control, Prody says it was more like something evil. At one of the raves, they found shackles, chains, and handcuffs. It was like people were tied up and others were watching.
He thought there might’ve been some cult stuff going on, but Maia Lincoln shut down that idea right away. Prody is convinced someone brought the snakes there. Lucia and Oliver yell at one another to see if they’re okay. Oliver admits he won’t be able to fix this. Honey begins mocking them seconds later. Matilda has a piece of metal that she might be able to use to escape. Prody asks Jack if he was okay being alone in Newport. Although Jack says yes, Prody doesn’t understand that because he feels lonely. Jack thinks he should just give it time. Jack is surprised to find Maia in his home when he gets there.
She wants to know why he came back to London. Maia warns him that she is going to mess with his head because he is messing with her case. Jack says he had an argument with his brother in their tree house. He shoved his brother who ended up storming off. Ewan left because of Jack and never came home. Jack’s thumb never healed. He is convinced his neighbor did it and he loved that Jack knew. The neighbor even planted things for him to find. After he joined the first, he entered his neighbor’s name into the system and learned he served time for being a pedophile.
Since he couldn’t get his neighbor on anything, Jack got angry and left London. It was only worse though. Later, Jack gets the file for the girl who broke her foot at the rave. Honey wants Molina to shower because he handled intestines. Molina asks if he has conflicting feelings about what they’re doing there. Honey doubts it and blames the intestines. He carries them further away from the house. Jack goes looking for Bethany Collins to ask what information she withheld from the police. He asks her about the rave at the abbey that got out of hand. Bethany believes the police already knew what she did. She claims a guy called Bones set the whole thing up.
Slasher movie stuff always happened during those raves. The whole point was to scare them. Hugo and Sophie were into it, especially Sophie. Beth shows Jack something on her phone. Honey brings Molina outside to show him the buckshot in the bucket even though Molina said he trapped it. He worries someone else might’ve shot it and could be wondering where it is. Honey questions where he got the knife. Molina says he didn’t need to cut the deer. He explains that he saw a deer near the house and its insides were already in the bucket. Honey is upset about that. He can’t believe Molina didn’t find it odd that someone had done the job for him.
They see another security sign and agree it wasn’t there before. Honey suspects someone is messing with them. Jack watches a video from one of the raves in which the man in the hazmat suit stabs a woman before lifting up a handful of snakes.
Wolf Review
The third episode of Wolf didn’t have a lot going on until the very end. Truthfully, a lot of what was happening probably won’t be important to the core story when all is said and done. If someone called it a filler episode, I’d have to agree with them. The ending did set up some interesting things for future episodes though.
This is obviously going for a dark comedy style, but I’ve really only snickered at one point through three episodes. Despite these issues, Wolf is still watchable and I am interested in seeing what happens. A lot of things could’ve been better, but Wolf isn’t bad if viewers are willing to accept what they’re being fed.
The only issue with this episode was that so little happened and we can see how they’re going to stretch the story out to six episodes. This episode scores a 5.5 out of 10.
