The show begins with Mary (Isla Fisher) waking up in bed with Gary (Josh Gad). Josh and Mary talk about tea. Mary asks if what they are doing is stupid. He grabs a pencil and sketchpad as Mary talks about telling Emma (Ariel Donoghue) about their relationship. He continues to sketch while Mary continues to fret over telling Emma. She doesn’t know what to do because it is her first time. He suggests enjoying each other and at least, giving it a try. He says every wolf needs a pack. She wasn’t aware of his artistic skills. He warns her to not give him too much credit just yet. His drawing looks like a stick woman, with big boobs. She cracks up.
Emma meets with her psychiatrist Trevor (Alan Dukes). She tells him about Gary saying dumb things. She thinks Mary is a distraction. The psychiatrist asks if he likes Mary distracting her father. She likes hanging out with Mary and explains how they met through a car crash. He is intrigued by her story of Gary crashing into Nonna Lorretta’s Restaurant. He and his wife were going to have dinner at the restaurant until they found out about the crash. He questions how she feels about Mary, whether she feels threatened. His wife had a son, Tony when they got together. It is a difficult dynamic that can work if Mary respects her relationship with her father, it should work. He and Tony work together.
She doesn’t believe the psychiatrist can help her because she is not comfortable about opening up to him. He gives her a professional recommendation before she leaves. Gary and Mary meet Emma at the psychiatrist’s office. Gary makes Emma’s lunch while Mary helps her get ready for school. They go out for dinner, have a snake while watching TV, and ride bumper cars. Gary picks up a couple of chickens for Mary. She nestles the chicken before taking it into her secret wolf chamber.
Mary spends the night in her wolf chamber. Gary is holding her robe when she opens the door. As he washes the blood out of her hair, he suggests they tell Emma before the next full moon. Mary questions what they should do if Emma is hysterical when she finds out. He believes keeping such a big secret from Emma will not end well. Gary assures her by professing his love and kissing her hand.
Mary, Gary, and Emma visit Sarah (Emma Lung). Sarah gives Gary the news about her new baby’s name, Lisa. Emma asks Gary how he feels about Sarah’s decision to name the baby after his late wife. He is thrilled. Ray (Anthony Taufa) scolds the cat for growling. Olivia (Honour Latukefu) yells, “Swear jar.” Emma tells Sarah about their planned camping trip. Gary says it was Mary’s idea. Gary takes the baby while Sarah eats. Sarah and Emma take Olivia to the toilet. Mary gets upset when Gary tries to entice her to hold baby Lisa.
Mary puts the dishes away. Gary asks Mary what is wrong with her. She informs him her menstrual cycle is late. He says it is a lot to process. Raising her voice, she refuses to talk about it right now. She is concerned about the baby being a werewolf. He asks are you serious. She reminds him that he wouldn’t eat their baby. He assures her it wouldn’t happen. She wouldn’t eat it, but her werewolf would. Crying, she is already eating sausage. She is concerned about him resenting her if it happened. They both agree that a family would be good. Oliva yells, “Swear jar” when Mary says a curse word. She gives her $50 and heads back to the barbecue. They get concerned when Gary nonchalantly walks toward the pool. He joins them at the table for some cake.
Mary is sitting with Oliva and Emma. As Sarah and Gary approach, they laugh. Sarah says Emma’s attitude has improved and describes her excitement for camping as “beautiful.” She warns him to not mess this up.
Mary joins Gary outside. He promises to never ask her to do something she doesn’t want to do. He is confused about the changes her body undergoes on a full moon. He will always be there to support her. They will be a wolf pack. She gets in her vehicle and cries.
Mary questions when they should tell her as they hike up a dirt road. Gary is doing dishes and Mary relaxing when Emma alerts them of the upcoming full moon. She wants to stay an extra night. Gary says they have something to do. She becomes concerned when Gary says they want to tell her something. He grabs Mary’s hand, and the words do not come out. Mary finishes his sentence, blurting out that she is pregnant. Emma laughs as the episode comes to an end.
Wolf Like Me Review
Another good episode, with a bit of filler. Not much happened, it seems they are waiting until the finale to show Emma’s reaction to Mary’s werewolf side.
The show continues to touch on sensitive topics like parental death, mental illness, and unwed pregnancy. On the outside, you see a dysfunctional couple. If you look deeper, you see two people who care deeply for each other and Emma. There may be a few life lessons hidden in the script somewhere as well.
The episode deserves a 6.5. Get more Wolf Like Me recaps here. Supper ReelMockery by clicking the link.
