The show begins with a narration by Mary (Isla Fisher). She has been keeping a secret for an extremely long time. It is no longer possible for her to keep the secret because someone knows.  Anyone who knows her secret is in danger.

Sarah (Emma Lung) checks in on Emma (Ariel Donoghue) while she sleeps. Mary questions if she can trust the person who now knows her secret. It is easier to take the path of fear, but you are sure to fail. Opening up about her secret may give her an opportunity to live.

Distraught, Gary (Josh Gad) sits on the kitchen floor with a knife in his hand. Tears drop down his face. She yells from inside the locked door to alert him that she is coming out. When she opens the door, the shutters will open as well. He couldn’t get out of the house before it locked down. He asks how I know you are not that thing. She speaks in her normal voice, telling him to trust her. Still holding the knife, he stands to his feet. Whispering, he asks can I trust you.

 

She opens the door and steps out of the room nude, with blood running from mouth, down her chest. He stares in shock, as she introduces her true self.

Gary sits across from her at the dining table. She tells him the knife is not necessary. He says how do I know you won’t turn into that thing. She asks if he is going to tell anyone about his experience. No one would believe him. He sits there all night, thinking he went crazy. She assures him, he is not crazy. During a visit to Prague, she was bitten by what she believed was a dog. Her and her husband, Dave was still intoxicated from taking Molly. He trips out when she stands up to get water, holding the knife in front of him. She shows him the bite scare on her upper left arm.

She was treated with antibiotics and refused to call off the trip. He tells her to get to the point. The night before they returned home, they were out, and everything was perfect. She transitioned into a wolf and ate Dave. When she woke up, she was into the woods and Dave was nowhere to be found. Gary stares in horror. The police thought Dave was killed by a wild animal. She was in shock and couldn’t remember anything. He says you knew what you had done. On the trip home, she ate a family of Italians. He asks if she has eaten anyone else. She moved to Adelaide to escape it all.

Each full moon, she locks herself in the room and eats live old, diseased chickens. He suggests supermarket chicken. She refuses to eat chicken with hormones. They chickens must be alive when she eats them. He asks about the goat. The neighbors might notice the goats, it was just a one-time deal. He snarky asks what was wrong with the goat. She says it was diseased and they were going to euthanize it. He is the first person to find out about her condition. He says, “I can see why.” He jumps up with the knife and orders her to give him his keys. She grabs the keys and asks if he plans to tell anyone.

She lives in fear of someone finding out. She blames him for following her home. He blames her for taking his keys. She believes there is a reason why this happened and admits to seeing signs. He tells her to keep the keys and prepares to leave. She rushes to the front door and pleads with him to listen to her.

They rush out the door into a crowd of people while she tells him about the song playing on the radio when their cars collided. “Queen of the Stone Age” was Dave’s favorite band. He doesn’t want to hear it. They walk into a group of marathon runners. She says it could be fate. He disagrees, saying it is only a coincidence. The collision took place on the anniversary Lisa’s (Gary’s wife) and Dave’s death. A marathon official (Gareth Davies) says hey quilt lady, get out of the road. She turns around and screams, “Why don’t I rip off your head and shit down your neck.” She promises to never harm him or Emma.

 

 

He questions why there is a slit in the door if she planned to keep her secret forever. He takes off running in the opposite direction of the marathon runners.

She rushes home to pack her bags and her chicken. Gary mutters to himself as he walks to his car. When he arrives at Sarah’s house, he walks directly to the pool and falls in face first. Sarah asks if he is okay. He says I haven’t slept. Emma shakes her head and walks away.

Mary visits Gwen (Robyn Nevin) at the nursing home. She puts her fresh flowers in a pot and gives Gwen a quilt with a cat. She apologizes for not staying and finishing the quilt. While Gwen listens, she tells her about Gary and Emma. It felt like the universe brought them together. Her true self scared him away. She tells her that Gary saw her transition into wolf. Gwen laughs and says everyone turns into a wolf.

Sarah reminds Gary to not feel guilty because he spent the night away from Emma. They all want him to be happy. Olivia (Honour Latukefu) says she wants Gary to be happy. Ray (Anthony Taufa) says Gary is more emotional than he realized.

Gary offers to take Emma anywhere she wants to go for lunch. They end up in an Italian restaurant. The restaurant manager (Vincent Stone) asks him if the food is okay.

In the car, Emma asks where he was last night and if he stayed with her. He doesn’t think Mary is right for him. When he flips the radio on, he recognizes the song and back into a vehicle. Emma calls him an idiot. He turns around to see Mary sitting in the vehicle he hit as the episode comes to an end.

 

Wolf Like Me Review

Some people would argue, this is not the typical love story, but is it that far off? A man and woman with unique challenges coming together through fate or coincidence.

While the acting is spot-on, the dialogue, not so much. I’m not a big fan of Mary’s potty mouth.  For a family show, the profanity provides no significance to the dialogue.  Some of the dialogue is silly but in a good kind of way.

The show presents viewers with smart, caring, and complex characters that are believable enough. Get more Wolf Like Me recaps here.
