Repent At Leisure – The episode opens with Liv Taylor (Jenna Coleman) having a flashback of Will Taylor (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) frantically preparing for Caryl’s (Claire Rushbrook) impending arrival. She teases him as he tries to make everything perfect. She asks if he plans to propose to Caryl. He says his plan was to propose to her with Caryl’s permission. She asks why he wants to marry her. He confesses to feeling alone until she came into his life.
While showering, Liv has flashbacks of their wedding and a fight in the woods. Rehearsing her alibi speech in a mirror, she is startled by a knock at the door. Discovering the visitor is Will, she slams the door as he tries to explain what happened last night. In the corridor, he attributes his poor behavior to painkillers and booze. She agrees to forget it before they embrace. Later, they convince the hotel manager (Colette Nwachi) to let them check out a day early to spend more time in Vegas. Reluctantly signing the guestbook, Liv overhears Will urge the manager to contact him if someone turns in a red rain jacket. Outside, Garth (Eric Balfour) asks Liv and Will if they have heard from Cara Parker (Ashley Benson). He claims Cara left before he woke up and isn’t answering his calls. Will’s attempt to call Cara is futile. Liv’s call goes straight to Cara’s voicemail. Will asks if she took everything with her. Garth assures them that everything was fine when they went to bed at midnight.
Garth searches Cara’s belongings. Liv asks Will about Cara and Garth’s relationship. Will reminds her that he and Cara are only colleagues when Garth approaches with her phone. Will calls Bonnie (Talia Balsam) to ask if she has talked to Cara. Bonnie says no when she suspects Cara has disappeared.
The ranger (Vanessa Walsh) gathers volunteers to look for Cara. Shortly after joining the search, Liv and Will leave the trail. After summiting a hill, Will’s ankle forces a stop. Spotting a necklace from her flashback, Liv secretively retrieves it. She urges him to rest but he is eager to rejoin the search party. He learns that a female hiker has been found.
Garth informs Liv and Will of Cara being transported to the Mann Freemont hospital. He collects a few things before Liv drives him to the hospital.
Cara wakes at the hospital with no memory which frustrates Garth. The nurse (Patti Harris) gives him a brief explanation of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). He demands answers before leaving to find the surgeon. Liv apologizes to Cara who assures her that it isn’t her fault.
The following day, Liv orders flowers for Cara while Will sleeps. Returning from her run, she finds Will comforting Garth in the hotel parking lot. Fleeing in the opposite direction, she calls Caryl amid a panic attack. Caryl urges her to face it head-on.
After leaving a letter addressed to Will in the hotel bathroom, Liv goes to the lobby. Will asks to speak with her outside where he confesses to having an affair with Cara. He claims to have ended the relationship before pleading for an alibi. Laughing, Liv asks if he and Cara were together last night. He says Cara met him after an argument with Garth but they took measures to not attract attention. She accuses him of misleading her when a ranger orders them inside for questioning.
Inside, the ranger says while Cara’s fall is being treated as an accident, they need to investigate thoroughly. Will explains his relationship with Cara as being friendly colleagues. He assures the ranger that their being booked at the hotel at the same time is coincidental. He claims to have left their hotel room for a nightcap at 11:30pm. Livs confirms his story. Will says they have reservations in Vegas. The ranger orders them to stay where they are until they are cleared. The episode ends.
Wilderness Review
It is unfortunate that the show isn’t much better because it could be, despite the highly unoriginal plot. I do have to give Jenna Coleman credit for some of her emotional scenes. The scene in which Liv has a panic attack while talking to Caryl on the phone feels real and intense. Unfortunately, it isn’t consistent. Oliver isn’t half bad at times either. There is some suspense there, but it is nowhere near what it could be. I’d give this episode a 5 out of 10.
