We Might Regret This Series 1 Episode 1 Recap

As the opening episode of We Might Regret This Begins, Ty (Aasiya Shah) walks in on Freya (Kyla Harris) and Abe (Darren Boyd) having sex. In the kitchen alone, Ty tells Abe what he’s doing for Freya is amazing. If Ty was a middle-aged bankruptcy lawyer and a hot Canadian artist moved in, she’d be beside herself with insecurity. Ty says he isn’t because he’s one of the good ones. Ty helps Freya who wants to talk to her about last night. Ty admits she always wondered whether it worked down there. Freya confirms she can feel everything just before the doorbell rings. Abe greets Jo (Elena Saurel) at the door. Jo busts in and says hello to Freya. She confesses she’s pretty much homeless right now. Freya invites her to stay even though Abe doesn’t want to.

Later, Abe and Freya talk about getting rid of Jo and Ty. Abe tells her to go kill it at her interview. Jo asks Freya about the meeting while she’s getting dressed. Freya says she hashtagged wheelchair on Instagram and a diversity agency slipped into her DMs. Jo questions whether “moodelling” is going to ruin Freya’s artistic integrity. Freya admits it will but she has to do it anyway. Jo isn’t eager to tell her where she’s been for the last eleven months. Ty asks if it’s presumptuous to pack some headshots of her own. Abe visits Jane (Sally Phillips). Jo and Ty help Freya make it to the interview. Jo knocks a man’s bike out of the way so they can push the wheelchair through. Abe tells Jane he’s throwing Freya a welcome-to-London party. He invites her to come.

Abe also wants a divorce. Freya talks to the interviewers about her wish and her modeling experience. Olivia (Emma Sidi) and Olyvya (Hanako Footman) confuse her by saying they’re both Olivia. They tell her she’s the most stunning woman they’ve ever seen. They talk about her being a proud, white disabled woman. Freya argues she isn’t white because she’s part Guyanese and part Chinese. Abe and Jane talk about how Freya needs care around the clock. Olivia and Olivia think Freya has lots of potential. Jo interrupts to ask for cigarettes. Jane worries that Abe is going to propose to Freya. Jo tells Ty about how she pushed Freya off a bridge when they were younger. Jane tries to convince Abe that he doesn’t need to propose. Abe’s son Levi (Edward Bluemel) comes in and jokes with his father. Levi argues he’s not the one having a mid-life crisis.

Jo offers to clear Freya’s catheter since she needs to urinate. The receptionist admits they don’t have a disabled bathroom so Jo and Freya try to do it outside. Jo gets squirted in the eye. Back at home, Ty offers to call the police since she believes Jo put Freya in the wheelchair. Jo looks around upstairs without them. Ty tries to get Freya out of there because she needs to arrive on time. Freya tells Ty it’s not working out. Jo interrupts and fires Ty. Freya goes to the party Abe has thrown for her. Levi and Jo run into each other near the bathrooms. Levi tells her that he prefers the vibe of the women’s bathroom. They end up making out. Jo eventually stops and walks out of the bathroom. Jo serves Jane while they talk about Abe’s dance skills. Jo learns Abe is her ex-husband.

Abe comes over and tries to get Jane to dance. He says Doreen is drunk. Jane agrees to handle her. Jo and Abe tell each other they’re not going to let Freya get hurt again. Abe tells her she can stay for a couple of days. When an old lady asks too many questions, Jo and Freya go to the bathroom to snort coke. They talk about Freya possibly moving too quickly with Abe. Jo believes Abe is going to propose and that means he’s moving too fast. Freya goes through her options with Jo suggesting they leave right now. Abe begins speaking to the crowd while looking for Freya. In private, Freya tries to figure out why Jo is actually there. Jo buys her some time by setting off the fire alarm. Seconds later, Jo finds out who Levi is. Ty tells Jo she could’ve been nice to her.

Abe asks about getting a replacement. Freya looks at Jo, but Jo and Abe don’t want that. Freya tells Jo that she needs her so Jo agrees to do it. Back at home, Abe finds Jo in bed with Freya.

We Might Regret This Review

The opening episode of We Might Regret This jumped right in without developing the relationship between Abe and Freya. Instead, Abe is already on the verge of proposing even though everyone else thinks that’s a bad idea. Freya’s old friend, Jo, shows up out of the blue and immediately changes everything for the couple.

When Freya’s caregiver Ty is fired, she needs to find a replacement. Although Abe doesn’t agree, Jo is a natural replacement and reluctantly accepts the position. The episode was okay although it doesn’t stand out much from similar series. The primary difference is the addition of Kyla Harris who has a unique set of difficulties.

The character could provide an eye-opening look at the difficulties faced by wheelchair-bound individuals. However, the first episode tried to do this humorously and as raunchy as possible instead of being delicate and effective. For instance, Jo and Freya didn’t need to clear the catheter in the middle of the street where anyone could see. Jo didn’t need to get sprayed either.

The episode also had lots of slanted jokes about specific groups that just fell flat. All the attempts at humor fell flat for that matter. On one hand, the series wants us to be sympathetic towards Freya and Abe. On the other hand, both are being put on pedestals or things are just going too well for them.

The episode wasn’t bad and there’s room for it to become an eye-opening, emotional roller coaster. It just needs to find out what it wants to be because it lacks any heart at this stage. The episode scores a 5 out of 10. Recaps of We Might Regret This can be found here.
