As the episode begins, we see Lucky Flynn (Tim Minchin) driving down the road. He is hauling a piano and texting to his buddy Toby. Lucky reaches behind him to grab a pill and drops it on the floor. When he tries to retrieve it, he nearly gets into an accident so he pulls over. As he pulls back onto the road, Lucky’s vehicle is struck by a ute driven by Meg (Milly Alcock). Both are fine but Meg has suffered an arm injury and will not be able to drive. The piano isn’t damaged either but Lucky is worried he’ll have to leave it behind.
Thanks to advice from Meg, Lucky manages to move from piano from the trailer to the ute. Since Lucky can’t get cell signal, he agrees to drive the ute to the hospital for Meg. Along the way, Meg listens to music that annoys Lucky. He eventually convinces her to shut it off and talk. To keep her content and quiet, Lucky tells her about the freak death of ELO cellist Mike Edwards. Meg thinks he is boring. Finally, they make it to the hospital and Meg manages to annoy the receptionist too. Meg pretends Lucky is her father.
Paul (Matthew Whittet) tries to drink inside but Nurse Gale (Fiona Harris) tells him to stop. Lucky becomes worried when Meg decides to lie on the hospital paperwork but he cannot stop her. She threatens to tell everyone he is a pedophile. While Meg gets treated, Lucky goes to a nearby store in hopes of getting money from an ATM. He doesn’t have enough money to withdraw and he loses his card. He also finds out that the insurance company is not going to pay for the damages to his vehicle. Luck returns to the hospital lobby which has turned into a madhouse.
He watches a video of his mother who appears to have cancer. Meg interrupts and accuses him of watching porn in the hospital lobby. The doctor thinks her arm might be broken. She’s been given some type of medication to dull the pain. Lucky enjoys that medicine with her before learning Meg’s dad is at the pub. Lucky intends to take the piano and leave Meg at the hospital but she wants him to take her to Perth. Lucky refuses the offers and heads outside to call friends. Unfortunately, Lucky is unable to find anyone willing to help him.
He goes to a convenience store after running out of phone credit. That night, Lucky waits outside and watches the video of his mother again. She encourages him to come home. She says everyone makes mistakes and we see a flashback of Lucky in an argument with someone. He takes one of his anxiety pills before Paul steps outside and asks about the piano. Lucky pays Paul for his beer but Paul takes a couple with him. After getting drunk, Lucky goes inside the hospital to get Meg’s keys. He also takes some money without waking her up. The nurse interrupts him on the way out to let him know that the radiologist will be there in a couple of hours.
When the conversation ends, Luck leaves and drives the ute down the road. In the morning, Meg steps outside to find her vehicle missing. He looks sad before Lucky pulls out and gives her breakfast. She tells him that she has a fractured radius. Meg reminds him that he owes her 50 bucks as the ute flies down the road.
Upright Review
Upright had good reviews elsewhere so I was hoping it would be decent at least. It didn’t disappoint. At first, Milly Alcock’s character was a bit annoying but she settled down. The show is funny and very likable. At only 30 minutes an episode, not much is going to happen. Nevertheless, the episode was eventful with the viewer learning more about the characters’ backgrounds and personalities. The relationship between Lucky and Meg is very interesting. That will likely be the driving factor behind the series.
I am eager to see what is going to go wrong for the couple next. The opener was very good. I’d give it a 7.5 out of 10.
