At the beginning of the episode, Lucky Flynn (Tim Minchin) takes the stage at his brother’s wedding. He is drunk and rambles throughout the speech. Toby (Daniel Lapaine) and Suzie (Ella Scott Lynch) are not happy with his performance. After that, we jump back to the present and see that Lucky and Meg (Milly Alcock) have been staying in a campground. Lucky gets a shower before waking Meg and telling her to get ready. Meg goes for supplies and buys tampons. Meg gets help from the woman behind the counter since she knows Lucky won’t be able to help her.
While Meg is awake, the cops enter looking for someone and Meg believes they’re after her. She sneaks out and rushes back to Lucky. They leave a few moments later. Once they’re on the road, Meg gets on Lucky’s nerves by telling him about the symptoms of toxic shock. Eventually, Lucky takes over the radio and puts on a classic song. He explains that it is his grand playing the piano in the back. Meg asks to pull over so she can use the bathroom and change her tampon. She wants to use the phone too.
Meg calls her father and leaves him a message. He is still in bed and doesn’t bother getting up. Meg goes to the bathroom, takes a picture of the nasty toilet, and leaves her wallet behind. When they get back on the road, Meg annoys Lucky a bit more. When they realize they’re nearly out of gas, they’re forced to turn around so they can get Meg’s wallet. They make it to the bathroom and find a group of people there and they appear to be up to no good. Meg’s wallet is missing and she suspects the group too it. Lucky agrees to chase after them but he seems reluctant to speed.
Before too long, they get pulled over. Meg tells Lucky that he’ll have to lie to the police since the ute belongs to her brother. Thankfully, one of the officers remembers Lucky from his band. This allows them to escape without getting a ticket. Lucky takes a few pictures with the fan before they’re asked about the group of hoodlums. Lucky and Meg point them in the right direction. Lucky continues down the road until they run out of gas. They’re forced to push the vehicle the rest of the way to the petrol station. While Lucky is pushing, we see a flashback of Lucky being ridiculed by his brother and Suzie. They tell him he should be ashamed of himself.
Once they arrive at the petrol station, Lucky tries to convince the clerk to help them out but she refuses. Before too long, the shady group arrives and Meg comes up with a plan. Lucky distracts one of them while the others head inside. Meg takes their gas pump and fills up the ute. She searches the car and finds her wallet as well. Before they leave, Meg smashes up their vehicle and yells at them. The clerk calls the police. Once Meg and Lucky get back on the road, they pass a police car a few moments later. Then, Meg shows Lucky a picture of her brother at The Big Banana. Their journey comes to an end when they find out Meg loaded the wrong type of fuel into the ute.
Upright Review
This episode of Upright pushed things in the right direction but I am not sure if it was enough. I wish they would hurry up and get to the reasons Meg and Lucky have found themselves on this spiritual journey. I find both characters a bit annoying at times. Meg is a tad bit too loud and Lucky has become a bum. They work well together though and I think the show is going to pay off in the long run.
I’ve enjoyed it but I see areas where it could be improved. Nevertheless, it has been a fun ride so far and I am eager to finish the season. This episode scores a 7.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Upright before you leave!
