At the beginning of the episode, we jump back in time and see Lucky (Tim Minchin) hanging out with his buddies. Toby (Daniel Lapaine) introduces Lucky and everyone else to his girlfriend Suzie (Ella Scott Lynch). After that, Lucky and Toby play a song together on stage. Seconds later, Lucky wakes up and nearly runs into a vehicle and a kangaroo. Meg (Milly Alcock) forces him to pull over to the side of the road so she can drive. Lucky freaks out when he finds out that he has run out of his anxiety medication.
Meg drives while Lucky works the clutch but that doesn’t go very well. Meg gets on Lucky’s nerves before deciding to stop. Lucky doesn’t want to but Meg stops anyway. She takes the keys and makes a run for it. Lucky eventually catches up with her and gets the keys. She wonders why the ground is pink for miles. Lucky doesn’t have an answer and he doesn’t have time to play around. He tells her that he is going to see his family for the first time in years and that was giving him panic attacks. Eventually, Meg catches up with him and they continue down the road.
Before too long, they visit Dr. Kashani (Sachin Joab) in hopes of getting Lucky’s medication. Meg gets on Lucky’s nerves until he lashes out and tells her to sit down. The doctor becomes concerned about Meg’s wrist so he decides to speak with her alone. During their private conversation, the doctor suspects Lucky was responsible for the broken arm. Meg manages to steal a prescription from the doctor’s office before she leaves with Lucky. They try to get the medication from the pharmacy but the woman in charge closes so she can watch the football game.
With that, Lucky and Meg decide to catch the game as well. Lucky places the prescription under salt and pepper shakers before going for another drink. While he is away, Meg watches the video of Lucky’s mother on his phone. Toby sends a nasty message and Meg wants to respond in kind but Lucky stops her from doing so. Soon, Lucky finds out that a bikie gang is outside with his piano. He jumps into the back of the ute and sits down next to one of the bikers before they play a song together. After that, they become fond of Lucky.
After that, they head back in for drinks and Lucky finds the doctor sitting next to the prescription. Meg decides to play pool while Lucky tries to retrieve the prescription without getting caught. Meg gets into a spat with one of the bikers while the doctor’s son brings the note to his attention. Lucky is scolded until he hears Meg yelling out as she is attacked by the biker. Lucky comes to her aid and fends off one of the bikers but others jump in. The piano biker helps him escape. Lucky makes it outside and Meg picks him up in the ute. Lucky and Meg manage to escape before they stop on the side of the road again.
Meg decides to listen to the road to see if the bikers are coming and Lucky does the same. He tells Meg that his mother is dying. Meg asks if he heard that from the road and they share a laugh until the episode ends.
Upright Review
I am really liking Upright so far. Meg and Lucky have a great relationship and the acting is pretty good for a comedy. The only thing concerning me is Meg. She is overly obnoxious and annoying at times. I hope they start scaling her back a bit because she was too much early on in this episode. I would like to see the show take a serious turn and focus on the characters’ lives a bit more.
The episode was decent. It scores a 7 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Upright before you leave!
