As this episode of Unforgotten begins, Murray Boulting (Jordan Long) goes to the Llagavelly Farm to look for David Bell. A woman greets him and asks him to follow her. Lady Emma Hume (Hayley Mills) tells Tony (Ian McElhinney) that he needs to slow down now that he is older. She says he shouldn’t need a break from work because he shouldn’t be working. Tony doesn’t know what he is trying to prove. He knows that he sees the mistakes more as he gets older. Tony claims he has done decades of wrongs. Emma thinks they have to move on and avoid living in the past. Murray is told that the only problem they ever had was with Precious Falade.
She explains that Precious betrayed him for the God of Money. Murray reminds her that David was 42 and Precious was 15 when she got pregnant. Then, he is taken to David’s grave. DCI Jess James (Sinead Keenan) visits a friend of Steve named Nick because she suspects he is staying with him. She tells the man about Steve sleeping with her sister. Once she leaves, Nick tells Steve (Andrew Lancel) that he needs to go. DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) goes home where Sal (Michelle Bonnard) is waiting for him. She wants to know what it was about when he asked her to marry him that night. Although it was a genuine proposal, Sal suspects it was because he was so lost.
Sunny admits he doesn’t know what is going on now. He confesses to feeling stuck and lost. Sal says that is the most he has said to her about it in nine months. Sunny thought she was jealous and he completely understands that. Sal doesn’t think they should make any decisions right now although she believes they can ride this out with time. Once she got pregnant, she realized how much she wanted a baby and how much he doesn’t. Sal says that is a big thing. She is going to stay with her mom. They can keep talking, but she needs time to think. Dave and Ebele go to the station where Fran (Carolina Main) calls Karol asking him to call her back. When she goes inside, she learns from Karen Willetts (Pippa Nixon) that Jay has been bailed.
They agree it might be a good idea to get firearms support when approaching him. Once Jess approves it, Sunny sits down with her and asks how she is doing. They agree they’ve been dreadful before saying they’ll distract themselves with work. Jay (Rhys Yates) retrieves a hidden laptop from his flat and puts it in a bag. He tells Cheryl (Hebe Beardsall) that they need to go. He tells her that money isn’t going to be a problem anymore before the cops burst in. He warns the cop to look after the laptop because it is his personal laptop and not something he stole. Back at the station, Murray tells everyone that Niamh said Precious had an older sugar daddy. They suspect it could be Tony.
As for David Bell, he died three months before the murder. They discuss Jay who might have his own sugar daddy. Karen says she found a 30-pound payment to a small phone shop in Acton. Elise talks to Karol (Max Rinehart) about him being a person of interest in a murder that might have a sexual element. Karol insists it isn’t true, but Elise makes him leave anyway. Karol tells her to keep the money for the girls. Fran finishes speaking with HR at West London Social Services and they confirmed that Karol denied the allegation, but refused to hand his phone over. He was allowed to resign on mental health grounds with no complaint on his record. When he left, another employee came forward with a similar allegation.
They wonder if there was a sexual misdemeanor with Precious that escalated. Fran is asked to make an application to get his work emails for 2016. Sunny and Jess interview Ebele (Martina Laird) about the last time she saw Precious. She is asked about the phone number and payment, but she says nothing. Ebele claims she knows nothing about Precious’s phone number. She doesn’t know about the call on the day her daughter died. She is asked about the fight she had with her daughter outside the house 12 days before she died. Ebele argues that she never touched her daughter proving that she was there. She also denies that Precious had fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
Ebele insists she didn’t drink when she was pregnant and Precious just wanted an excuse as to why she struggled at school. Sunny suggests they argued many times about this very subject. Ebele says she did the best she could for Precious and she is sorry if she wasn’t good enough. She thinks you have to move on from a childhood that isn’t ideal. Ebele claims to have never hit her daughter and didn’t kill her. Karen sits down with Medhi (Abhin Galeya). It is explained that Tony was conservative, but he changed sometimes in late 2016. Nobody is sure what changed him although some thought it was his cancer diagnosis in 2014. Medhi believes it was a woman though. Fran is told that many of the emails were deleted by Karol, but it may be possible to get some of them back.
Szymon (Hubert Hanowicz) tells Karol that he doesn’t know what he did, but he always thought of him as a good guy. Karol apologizes for any trouble he is going to cause him. Szymon isn’t worried about it because he’ll sort it out. Karen tells Jess and Sunny that Medhi saw Tony with a woman and they were rowing. He thought they were in an intimate relationship. Medhi remembers that the woman was petite and either mixed-raced or Mediterranean-looking. Karen also found that the first company Hume worked for between 1968 and 1973 was a London stockbroker called Morgan Lavelle. It is the same company Ebele held up during the prank nine years later. Jess says they need to speak to the doorman right away. Karol gets a message from Fran wanting to talk when he gets back to the UK.
Later, Murray tells Sunny that they’ve found Elton King and he is happy to speak to them. Dave (Mark Frost) and Ebele speak to the VC people, but she has a change of heart. Elton is asked if Joseph could’ve had access to the gun after he was arrested. Elton claims he knows Joseph had access to it because he is the one who used it in the robbery. He was happy to take the blame for the robbery on the assumption that Jay would look after him on the inside. He didn’t so Elton is happy to speak against him now. Fran tries to find out what the DSH means on the payments from Coombe & Co. When she threatens to get a warrant, the man at the bank says he’ll need to speak to his boss. Ebele tells Dave that she was 17 and pregnant when she came home and found that her grandmother had invited Pastor Muyulu into their house.
He was there to perform an exorcism on her. She fought them off and left. When she came back to get her stuff, she found her grandfather there alone. He told her she wouldn’t shame the community if she got rid of it before she started to show. Ebele reveals he tied her up and put a funnel in her mouth before pouring half a liter of vodka down her. Whatever he did obviously didn’t work because Precious survived. Ebele says that and the way they raised her damaged her for life. She tried to get help the first time she got sober until that stopped. Jay is shown a copy of the triangulation document supplied by KZK Mobile. It shows that on June 26, 2016 at 18:49 a phone that they believe belonged to Jay called Ebele.
It was connected via a phone mast just 200 yards from 64 Waterman Road. Jay refuses to say anything about that. He is asked about Elton King, but he refuses to answer questions. Sunny mentions the people they spoke to who looked after Jay when he was growing up. They were told what Jay’s mother put him through and the people she made him encounter. Sunny suggests he did it because of that or it was an accident. Jay tells them that they don’t understand a thing. When his solicitor tries to stop him, Jay tells him to shut up before admitting he is not Joseph Bell. He explains he is Joe’s half-brother. His birth was never registered because his mom didn’t want him taken into care like Joe was.
His dad homeschooled him a little. Jay is now 21, but he was nearly 15 when his mom died. His dad died in 2015. Jay eventually says that his dad is Eric Royce. He lived on the streets and stole to survive in London. He adopted his brother’s identity to gain access to his benefits. Sunny asks if his brother needed his identity before Jay asks his solicitor to leave. Once he leaves, Jay says his brother didn’t need his identity and people out there would want to hurt him because of what he has seen. Jess insists they wouldn’t let anyone hurt him. Jay says people used to say that to Joe all day, but all of them were lying. That’s why he isn’t telling them anything. Jay’s laptop is prepared for inspection. Fran learns that all of Karol’s emails to Precious are gone from the server.
However, there are two from Precious to Karol. The first is sent at 14:23 on June 26. It mentions that Karol left his laptop at her place and it was unlocked. She found some interesting pictures and wants to know how much he’ll pay to not share them with his boss. Karol responded asking if he can come over after work which would be on the 27th. Precious responded by telling him to bring 2k. Fran remembers the laptop logged on her son’s arrest sheet. She talks to the man in charge of inspecting the laptop and he says it has barely been used in the last few years. The last activity was in mid-2016 so the laptop likely belonged to Precious. Fran asks him to look for anything related to Karol Wojski. The solicitor calls Tony to tell him about the half-brother, but Tony says there was no brother.
Tony urges Graham Saville (Mark Oosterveen) to just get him out of there. Then, Ben calls Tony to tell him about the unfortunate incident they had at the bank and the officer asking about the account he set up in the late 80s. He had to tell them about both standing orders. Fran gets a call from Gordy who says he got a weird call about the Precious Falade case. Sunny thinks it’ll be hard to determine whether Jay is telling the truth. Graham reminds them that they still have no evidence to connect him to the murder. Fran interrupts to tell Jess about the calling saying something about the body of Joseph Bell. The caller didn’t say who they were. Fran checked the address he gave and it is a small ground-floor flat in Greenford.
Jess wants to get a dog unit down there before admitting they have nothing to hold Jay. They’ll bail him to return next week. Jess asks Sunny if they kept looking for bullets when they found the first one. Sunny agrees to get Morten back in there. Karen approaches Mr. Blackwood to speak to him. Fran learns that a file named “Karol Wojsack pics” contained upskirt pictures. The file was made on June 26, 2016. They were downloaded from an email sent from a Hotmail address. The email address was created on the same day about 20 minutes before the email was sent. They suspect Precious created the address to send the files from Karol’s laptop to hers. There are 43 pictures in total and they’re from buses, shops, and elsewhere.
Daryl (Lewis Ian Bray) agrees to send them to Fran. Kate calls Jess to tell her Steve is there playing with the kids. Jess tells her to go on and she’ll call her later. Tony checks his boarding pass to Zurich. While looking through Karol’s statements, Fran gets a call saying he is there to see her. Jay is released while the garden is searched. Tony gets in a car to head to Gatwick Airport. Blackwood tells Karen that he was told he should downplay the incident if he wants to keep his job. One of the directors told him that. Karen knows that Anthony Hume’s father was on the board of directors so she suspects it was him. Blackwood admits he didn’t tell the court what she was shouting when she came through the door.
She yelled that she wanted to speak to her dad. She wanted to speak to Tony Hume. Jay leaves the station. A shoe is found buried in the backyard.
Unforgotten Review
This episode of Unforgotten did a good job of setting up the finale and wrapping up the main storyline. Although it hasn’t been clearly stated yet, it is pretty easy to guess what has happened and who is responsible. This series has been a leap in terms of believability because so many aspects of the story have been so farfetched.
The cult stuff in particular really seems far out in left field although that probably won’t amount to much in the long run. If this was only one unbelievable tidbit, it’d be one thing. Unfortunately, the fifth series has been overloaded with unrealistic things that make the whole story tough to swallow. It has also been difficult to care about any of the suspects possibly because so much time has been dedicated to introducing Jess and dealing with Sunny’s personal life.
At this point, Tony could gun down every suspect and flee to Zurich and it really wouldn’t have an emotional impact because there is no connection there. The relationship development between Jess and Sunny has helped a lot, but the investigation into Precious’s murder has been very lacking. None of the people potentially responsible for the crime are likable because they’re not good people.
The only one who is possibly decent is Dave and he has been such a minor character that it doesn’t help. The above-average series could still be an engrossing finale. Thankfully, that is usually the case with Unforgotten. The episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Unforgotten can be found on Reel Mockery here. Learn how to support us at this link.
