Token Joe – As this episode of Tulsa King begins, Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) goes to New York for his brother’s funeral. He goes into the funeral home and comforts a crying Joanne (Annabella Sciorra). She confirms that Tina (Tatiana Zappardino) is there, but recommends seeing his brother first. He talks to Denise Manfredi (Phyllis Pastore) briefly before looking at his brother. Dwight looks at Tina who isn’t eager to talk to him so he goes outside. Joanne tells him his daughter is a wonderful woman who got a degree in horticulture and owns her own business. When he asks about the husband Emory, he learns he is a nice guy in finance or something. His grandchildren are twins named Cody and Ryan.
Dwight reveals he’d like to say something at the mass tomorrow, but Jo doesn’t think that is a good idea. Caolan Waltrip has one of his men talk to police officers about the incident at the festival. They’re given a license plate number for one of the people they’re looking for and told the big guy wants this taken care of. Chickie (Domenick Lombardozzi) calls Dwight to remind him it looks bad that he is sneaking into town without letting him know. Dwight tells him about his brother before he is told to get to New York Memorial in the morning. Dwight wants to attend his brother’s mass instead, but Chickie thinks the family should come first. While driving around, Tyson (Jay Will) calls the Woodvale Salon and flirts with Charice until he gets pulled over by the police. After looking at the registration, the police officer tells Tyson to get out of the car.
They take him out and cuff him before finding marijuana in the vehicle. Tyson says the car isn’t his so they claim he stole it. At the jail, Tyson calls Dwight who doesn’t answer. He is put in a cell instead. Dwight joins Joanne who introduces him to Stella, Selena, Ethan, and Joe Junior. He tells Emory (Loren Dunn) that he could’ve called and got his blessing before marrying his daughter. Tina tells him that he was indisposed before reminding him that he stopped calling them. Once they begin talking about dinner, Tina accuses Dwight of bringing them there to make himself look like a big shot. They also learn that he settled the tab with Mikey at Supreme Memorials. Dwight gives a toast to Joe and to wipe out the past while enjoying the here and now. Tina decides to leave and take Emory with her. Armand (Max Casella) is approached by a woman at work who heard he was moonlighting as a tough guy at the festival.
Vince (Vincent Piazza) plays cards with Goodie (Chris Caldovinco) and others. Dwight joins them and says hello to Nico, Goodie, and everyone else. Vince gets mad when Dwight gives Celia (Dani Marco) a napkin because he thinks he is trying to show him up. Chickie tries to tell Dwight to be respectful while they walk toward the hospital room. Tyson pleads with the guards to let him go to the bathroom before they ask for the password to his phone. He gives the guard his password so he can go to a proper bathroom. Dwight calls Stacy (Andrea Savage) because he wants to hear a friendly voice. When she learns about his daughter, Stacy urges him to keep trying because she’ll come around. She warns him that there is more than meets the eye to the nitrous guys, but she won’t say more over the phone. The biker gang uses Tyson’s phone to call Dwight. They throw a bag over Bodhi’s head.
When Tyson is released, he learns that they’ve impounded the vehicle and stole his phone and $1,200. Dwight calls Denise and records a message of what he wanted to say at the church. Armand approaches the woman at work to see what she was talking about the other day. Roxy (Emily Davis) tells him about Black Macadam and her old man being the sergeant at arms. She warns him that they kill people who get in their way, but Armand doesn’t seem worried about them. Caolan (Ritchie Coster) interrogates Bodhi (Martin Starr) to see what he knows about Tyson. Bodhi says he doesn’t business with his boss Dwight who is the bane of his existence. When asked about their business, Bodhi says it is extortion. Caolan will let Bodhi relay his message to Dwight but not yet. Cops take him down to the bar where Mitch Keller (Garrett Hedlund) tells them to leave because the establishment is on Cherokee land.
Once Bodhi is released, the cop tells Mitch that he’ll see him soon. Armand goes home and begins searching for the Black Macadam motorcycle gang. He seems concerned when he learns more about the gang and its brutal ways. Dwight goes to his daughter’s flower shop after it closes before he wants to talk. Tina admits she feels bad for him. She tells him he is a bad bet because he hasn’t learned anything. When asked what he is doing in Oklahoma, Dwight says it is a little late for him to learn a new trade. Tina doesn’t want to talk about it so she suggests talking about Uncle Joe instead. Once Dwight asks if she’d prefer it to be him, Tina says no. Tina tells him how Uncle Joe looked out for her during her prom before reminding him that he left them burdens and obligations that wait. She reveals that Nico was the only one who’d come check in on them from time to time.
One night, she learned that the hard way why he is called the package. Dwight pleads with her to tell him what happened, but Tina doesn’t want to talk about it and doesn’t want him to do anything about it. Dwight goes back to the hospital and learns that they’re already gone. Instead, he talks to Pete (AC Peterson) who says he is hanging in there. They talk about Dwight’s brother and the good old days. Dwight realizes what he missed now and what she did without him. He reminds Pete that he swore he’d watch out for his wife and kid only for Nico to make a move on his daughter. Dwight gets rough with Pete until he understands that he didn’t know. He doesn’t tell Pete either. Dwight goes to the club where he beats Nico likely to death.
Tulsa King Review
This was another fun episode of Tulsa King even though it could accurately be called over-the-top and ridiculous. Viewers who’ve enjoyed the series so far know what they’re getting themselves into so they’re willing to accept that Tulsa King isn’t always grounded in reality. The episode pushed the story forward a lot in many areas with Black Macadam finally making a move against Dwight and his men in Tulsa.
In New York, Dwight had to deal with the death of his brother while getting the opportunity to see his daughter for the first time in a long time. When he learned that Nico had abused his daughter, he immediately did something about it by killing Nico. The episodes of Tulsa King are always short and easy to digest making the series a good binge for viewers interested in thoughtless, fun entertainment.
The episode had one or two gripping spots, especially the scene in which Dwight confronted Pete to see if he knew about Nico and his daughter. I do hope Dwight returns to Tusla and things heat up there in the next episode though. This one scores a 7.5 out of 10. Recaps of Tulsa King are available on Reel Mockery here.
