Tin Star Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

tin star series 2 episode 1

As the episode begins, we see Rosa (Jenessa Grant) working with a horse. She gives the horse some food. She promises to get it a blanket. She retreats inside before hearing something behind her. Rosa seems legitimately shocked. Anna (Abigail Lawrie) is shown hanging from the neck. We jump back in time ten hours. After Whitey (Oliver Coopersmith) is shot, Anna shots Jim (Tim Roth). Angela (Genevieve O’Reilly) tends to Jim. Anna tries to stop the bleeding. It appears that Jim has been shot in the leg. Anna flees from her mother. Angela unties the tourniquet and leaves Jack bleeding on the ground. She goes after Anna. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Bradshaw (Christina Hendricks) argues with Richard on the phone about her performance as a mother.

She notices a stranger sitting behind her. She approaches him with a shot a piece. Elizabeth introduces herself. The man says very little. The man eventually says something about someone being killed ten years ago. He says those on the scene claimed the killer looked a lot like him. The judge asked for his alibi. Elizabeth continues drinking. She gives him her room number. Before too long, they’re sleeping together. Jim continues bleeding out in the snow. He manages to crawl over to Whitey. Jim cries a bit before sitting up. He tries to stop the bleeding before grabbing the gun. Angela continues after her daughter. There is a knock at Elizabeth’s door.

A man appears at the door and hands her a letter. Elizabeth learns she has been fired. She tells the man to tell the shareholders that they’re messing with the wrong woman. Jim finds out that his gun is out of bullets. He makes it to a cabin and collapses inside. He begins chugging alcohol moments later. We jump over to North Stream Oil. Elizabeth arrives and heads inside. She speaks with the men in charge and new partners in Beijing. She begins telling them about corporate manslaughter. She is told that the company will press charges for extortion. Elizabeth learns that there are two detectives in the building already. She is told they’ll go to the federal police. Elizabeth wants a severance package. Security is brought in and Elizabeth is escorted out.

Angela continues tracking Anna. She finds her smartphone in the snow. Elizabeth calls Angela and tells her that they’re screwed. Angela tells her they need help finding Anna. Elizabeth promises that they’ll find her. Angela makes it to the vehicle and puts on a heavier jacket. Angela puts on some gloves as well. Jim suffers alone in the cabin. He gets up and ransacks the cabin. He eventually finds a first aid kit and tends to the wound. Jim tries to start a flare. He gives up on it eventually. He goes back inside and starts a fire. He begins burning the cabin to the ground. We see two men hunting. They spot the smoke. Jim sits and enjoys the warmth of the fire. Anna struggles through the snow. She finds a blood trail and follows it.

It leads her to a dead animal. A mountain lion sneaks up behind her. It approaches. Anna tries to be brave. Anna manages to scare it off. Constable Nick McGillen (Ryan Kennedy) rests in the hospital. Denise (Sarah Podemski) checks on him. Nick is not happy. He is afraid that Denise is going to leave him because he might be crippled. Nick intends to kill Jim. The hunters find Jim while Elizabeth makes it to Moose Mountain. Jim is transported to safety. Elizabeth and Angela visit the burnt-out cabin. They find blood near the chair. Denise visits Frank (Ian Puleston-Davies) and Randy (Lynda Boyd). Frank makes an excuse about their injuries. Frank doesn’t believe Denise is going to be able to help.

Angela and Elizabeth speak about the phone and the blood. Elizabeth wants to know the truth. Elizabeth tries to convince Angela to return. She is worried that they’ll die up there. Anna finds a small community. She sneaks inside of a barn. It is the barn where Rosa found her in the opening. Angela continues onward. Anna tries to get warm. She sees a rope and seems to contemplate suicide. She creates a noose for herself. Jim is taken inside. Elizabeth finds Angela collapsed in the snow. Anna puts the rope around her neck and steps off of the chair. The rope comes free and Anna crashes to the ground.

Tin Star Review

Tin Star did a fairly decent job with the bleakness. The episode definitely felt moody and depressing. Sadly, there wasn’t a whole lot going on other than that. What is the storyline for the season? Where are we headed? At this point, there is no direction whatsoever. The only thing I can figure out is that a lot of people are going to be out to get Jim. For a season opener, the episode didn’t do a good job of establishing storylines or anything of the sorts. There were no hooks. I feel no obligation to keep watching.

It wasn’t a total disappointment. In fact, it was to be expected with the quality of the previous season. I guess it is just wait and see now. The episode scores a 6 out of 10. Catch up with past recaps of Tin Star right now!

    1. Has been a few years since I watched this so I tried to skim through the recaps to see if I could find out. Surprisingly he seems to only be mentioned in that episode. I know Jack uses multiple aliases but I can’t remember a Richard at all.

Will try to rewatch some of the episode to see if I can find out. He isn’t mentioned again so I’d assume it isn’t a vital character though.
