The Vanishing Triangle Series 1 Episode 2 Recap

As the episode opens, Detective Chief Superintendent Gill (Philip O’Sullivan) holds a press conference for the missing 20-year-old, Amy Reynolds (Grainne Good). A reporter (Daire McMahon) questions the police’s slow response to her disappearance. Gill says most missing people resurface within 24 hours. He tells the press that officers are conducting a forensics search at Reynolds’ home. Another reporter (Hannah O’Brien) asks why he failed to reopen Janice Wallace’s (Maura Foley) murder case when it is linked to Reynolds. Gill denies there is evidence of a connection in the cases. He suggests The Dublin Evening Mail journalist, Lisa Wallace (India Mullen) owes the Reynolds’ family an apology for her interference in the case.

The Dublin Evening Mail – Lisa demands to know why Barbara Abrahams (Derbhle Crotty) went against her order and published her piece. Barbara assures her that the newspaper is not responsible for the suspect’s actions. Lisa claims to have made a promise to Detective David Burkely (Allen Leech) to not publish the article. Barbara says she should have told her. Barbara attributes her piece to forcing the police to investigate Reynolds’ disappearance. Later, Lisa receives a greeting card with a message that reads, “Thanks Lisa. Great article about me. Keep up the good work.” She reports it to Barbara.

Liam Benson (Peter Corboy) says a cab driver, Cillian Wade (Jonathan Byrne) claims to have seen a girl being pulled back into a vehicle while trying to escape. He adds that the male driver drove toward Ballington before suggesting it was domestic-related. Garda Roisin (Fionnuala Gygax) shakes her head at his comment. David requests the transcript but Benson only took notes. Benson boasts of having a good memory. Frustrated, David says he will question him. Ballington Booking Office – DC Gareth Brennan (Aaron Monagan) questions Wade about his statement. Wade claims to have seen a partially nude woman jumping out of the vehicle. Brennan asks if he told Benson that the woman was partially nude. Wade says yes before estimating the woman’s age between 19 and 20. Brennan demands to know why he didn’t try to help the girl. Wade says he just wanted to get home. Brennan asks if he knows the driver. Voicing concern for his wife, Wade agrees to identify the man if it is off-record.

Brennan and David arrive at an apartment complex. The suspect has an extensive criminal record and a prison stint. Brennan tells him that the suspect was out of prison when Janice was murdered. The suspect agrees to be questioned at the police station.

At the police station, Mark Bulger (Brian Moore) blows Roisin a kiss. Bulger has been out of Portferry Prison for six months. He denies any recollection of where he was Tuesday night between 10pm and 1am. Brennan tells him that a witness claims to have seen him near Goresbridge heading toward Ballington. Bulger assures them that he had nothing to do with Amy’s disappearance. Refusing to comment further, he leaves.

Susan Reynolds (Laoise Sweeney) complains about the police not doing anything to find Amy. Roisin says a Dublin detective has been put in charge of the investigation. She tells her that a potential suspect (Mark) has been questioned. Later, Susan calls Lisa to inform her of the suspect in Amy’s disappearance. Lisa experiences light-headedness after taking her medicine. She tells Barbara about Susan’s call before driving to Castlemoy. At the garda pub, Benson buys her a drink. Identifying herself as Paula, she asks about Amy’s case. After a few shots and a bit of flirting, she convinces Benson to tell her the suspect in the case is Mark Bulger. Upon leaving, she slips him a paper with her real name. He follows her into the parking lot where he tries to assault her. She knees him before fleeing to her car. While driving home, she nearly collides with an oncoming vehicle.

The next morning, Lisa receives a message – Well done on the article, your dad – on her pager.

David reprimands Benson for not reporting the woman was partially nude. He attributes his incompetence to Bulger being a free man. Brennan announces a search at the park near Bulger’s house. He dispatches two officers to The Woodpecker to question the regulars. David sends Benson home.

Hearing Bulger approaching, she hides behind his vehicle. He drives away and she follows. He brings his vehicle to a halt on an isolated road. Flipping out the headlights, she pulls into a parking lot. Emerging from the vehicle, she follows him to a house where she sees a female sitting on the floor. A clatter sends her fleeing but Bulger catches her. A struggle ensues and ends with her knocking him out with the wood ashtray. She returns to the house to free Teresa Gannon (Emily Kilkenny Roddy). The Vanishing Triangle Review

The script takes a different direction by injecting an agenda that probably has nothing to do with the real story. Homophobic slurs are intentionally embedded into the script. It is difficult to take a series seriously when irrelevant agendas are utilized for the sole purpose of propagation. This is an insult to the real victims.
