The show begins with a flashback of young Kostas Panigris (Nick Annas) waking up to a barking dog. He angrily orders the dog to stop barking. Nico (Tony Nikolakopoulos) goes out to assess the situation when the dog yelps. He sees Kosta holding a bloody knife and the dog lying motionless on the ground. He demands to know what he has done. Kosta appears to be in shock.
Adult Kostas Panigiris (Alex Dimitriades) is sitting quietly on an airplane. Dimitri (Alex Andreas) pleads with him to talk about it. Kostas puts several drops of a liquid substance in a beverage container. A call to Billy (Olafur Darri Olafsoon) goes unanswered, as he fights with Luci Miller (Shalom Brune-Franklin). Luci hits Billy in the leg, causing him to fall into a broken window. He grabs his neck, gushing blood, turns around, and falls to the floor. She answers Billy’s phone and tells Kostas, his gorilla is dead. He says, “Victoria, where are you.” His plane is heading to Burnt Ridge. He curses and throws his phone at the wall. She puts a few things in a bag while Dimitri entertains Kostas with a song and dance. She retrieves a bag of fake passports from a kitchen cabinet, placing one in her back pocket and the rest in her bag. With Billy’s truck keys, she slips in a puddle of blood and falls to the ground. The envelope with the fake passports slides under a table.
Kostas’ plane hits turbulence, resulting in an issue with the airspeed indicator. The pilot assures them everything will be fine. The plane is parked at an airstrip. Annoyed with the constant baaing, Kostas screams “fu** off” in the sheep’s face.
The Man, Elliot (Jamie Dornan) has Constable Helen Chambers (Danielle MacDonald) at gunpoint. She asks about the murder he committed. He denied killing the man buried in an oil drum. Luci is an ex-girlfriend who put the note, regarding the appointment at Gloria’s Diner. Chambers says she lied about putting the note in his pocket and suggests asking Luci. He orders her to give him her cellphone and get out of the car. She warns, “I could die out here.” He jumps in the driver’s seat and haphazardly puts the clutch in drive. When the car stalls, Chambers believes he has changed his mind. She runs in the direction of the car as he drives away.
Sergeant Rodney Lammon (Kamil Ellis) and Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers (Damon Herriman) talk about boring Burnt Ridge. They are headed to Luci’s place. Rogers suggests a career in major crimes. He doesn’t have enough experience. He pulls over the empty his foley catheter bag while Lammon cranks up the radio. Rogers angrily kicks a mailbox off its post. Lammon asks if everything is okay. He says not everything is your business.
Chambers pants for breath as she walks down the road. The Man returns and forces her into the car. In a smart-aleck tone, she says, “I knew you wouldn’t let me die.”
A taxi driver, McCoy (Stephen Hunter) arrives to pick up Kostas and Dimitri. Kostas is not happy with the beaten-down taxi. McCoy calls it the “best available.” It is what you get in a one-horse town.
Chambers and The Man arrive at Luci’s. She complaints about being called a hostage. He says “my Helen” sounds strange. They are shocked to discover Billy’s body on the floor. The Man questions how he got out of the well. She finds Luci’s fake passports and calls her “a real catch.” Before leaving, she jots down her license plate number. She pleads with him to let her go. He apologizes and orders her to get it.
At the Silverworth Regional Airport, Luci inspects her fake passport. She calls Jaipur Premier Cars, taxi service to request a car be sent to Sakut in Samra. Ahura (Kabir Singh) says that is far away from here. She agrees to pay him whatever it takes. She wants the driver to help her get redemption.
Chambers and Elliot are driving to the airport when she immediately stops for a roadblock. Seconds later, her car breaks down.
Rogers and Lammon arrive at Luci’s. Lammon is not good with dead stuff. Rogers recommends he go home as runs out the front door. He finds Chambers’ license plate number.
The Man pushes the car to a service center. The mechanic (Clayton Dunn) says they are closed. The Man offers to pay him whatever to get the car fixed and asks to borrow money from Chambers. They walk over to the Dusty Moon Motel to get a room. The receptionist says, “Cute couple.” Chambers tries to explain, they are not a couple, but The Man cuts her off in mid-sentence. He kisses her on the lips. They get the honeymoon suite.
She questions who would start their life out here. Ethan Krum (Greg Larsen) wants to visit Disneyland for their honeymoon, she wants to go to St. Petersburg to see the Winter Palace. He says what normal person has so many fake passports. He reads off the fake names, which turn out to be the Spice Girls. She believes Luci is utilizing the name, Emma Halliwell. She agrees to trade Luci’s location for her freedom. He calls Ethan needy when he sends two texts. They visit the restaurant next door. Being a hostage makes her drink. He looks at the menu and says I don’t know what I like.
Kostas continues to try Luci’s phone with no luck. They want to wring McCoy’s fat neck when he continuously slurps his drink. Kostas calls him a “simple man.”
A police officer enters the restaurant. He walks over to greet Chambers and The Man. He asks if the nacho dippers are okay. She says, “I need help, I need you to take them, cause I can’t stop eating them.” They all laugh. Ethan sends another text. They are on a trim team together because she needs to lose weight. She was given an ultimatum to come home, or their relationship is over. He is probably right. The Man says an ultimatum isn’t right. She says there is a person inside there who is all right. He looks at his martini and questions if he has ever tried one. He takes a sip and says, “Right, well, I’m an alcoholic.”
They are tipsy when they arrive at their motel room. He asks her to tell him a secret. She tells him to go first. He has flashbacks of a woman with a suitcase. She tried to commit suicide when her father died. It was like someone turned the lights out. Ethan was there for her when she was released from the hospital. Maybe that is why she stays with him. He holds her hand.
Luci receives a call from Ahura who has arrived at Sakut. Luci wants to talk to a lady at the retreat about her brother.
Kostas and Dimitri wake up in the taxi. He complains of a headache. Dimitri says it could be all the LSD he takes. McCoy says he doesn’t speak foreign and slurps on his drink. Dimitri calls McCoy “dog shit” and “pungent,” saying he’s intentionally irritating us. Kostas orders him to pull over. He gets out of the taxi and walks up to McCoy who asks who you talking to. He stabs him in the eye with his straw and beats him to death. Now, he feels better.
Rogers receives a call from Kalura Creek Police Department. Constable Alex (Nathan Page) found Chamber’s car. He orders him to stay put until he gets there.
Chambers and The Man wake up in the same bed. They don’t remember if they had sex. She just wants to curl into a tiny little ball. He goes for the car while she actually dies. Alex spots The Man get into Chamber’s car. He follows him to the hotel and updates Rogers. Constable Freddie says Emma Halliwell (Luci) booked a flight to Sydney, but never boarded the plane. The police are trying to get CCTV footage.
Lammon is waiting on Rogers at his car. He refuses to be left out of the investigation and gets into the car. When Rogers disconnects a call with Constable Alex, he dismisses Lammon who wants to learn. He says you will never be a detective it is beyond you. He gets out of the car.
Chambers and The Man play a game when Rogers arrives at the motel. He sends Constable Alex away. Rogers orders them to come out with their hands in the air. Lammon arrives to back him up. Rogers shoots him. The Man tells Chambers to go before he walks outside. He searches the room for Chambers and orders him to help load Lammon into the trunk of his car. He alerts Kostas of The Man’s arrest. The Man says, “Whatever it is they’re paying you I hope it is enough.” Chambers watches from the hotel room.
The Man asks what he wants. It’s not what he wants, it is what Kostas wants. He doesn’t know him. Kostas has a flashback of Nico scolding him for killing the dog as he and Dimitri drive down the road. Young Kostas says Dimitri made him do it. When Nico turns around, no one is there. Kostas is alone, driving down the highway. He sings a song and looks toward the empty passenger seat as the episode comes to an end.
The Tourist Review
I am one of Alex Dimitriades’ (The Principal, Underbelly) biggest fans. Unfortunately, this is not his best role. His screen time is so minimal, viewers are not given the opportunity to see his real acting potential.
The senseless killing of Constable Lammon, McCoy, and Ralph could and should have been avoided at all costs. The writers look like bloodthirsty wanna-be murderers. Too much killing becomes unrealistic and needless.
The fighting scene with Luci and Billy was absurd. Do the writers really want us to believe a petite woman is capable of taking down a giant? If so, they failed miserably.
There is obviously a story with some significance underneath it all, but it is being muddled by shallow and unsubstantial dialogue.
The episode deserves a 6.
