As this episode of The Split begins, Hannah (Nicola Walker) remembers what Nathan (Stephen Mangan) said about having to live and build a house somehow. She also thinks about what Christie (Barry Atsma) said about speaking all night in New York. As Nina (Annabel Scholey) prepares for the camping trip, she leaves a note for Tyler about spending the rest of their lives together. Then, Nathan, Nina, Rose (Fiona Button), and the others gather to leave for the camping trip. Nathan quickly finds out that only Gael (Alex Guersman) is willing to talk to him. Once they finally get the vehicles loaded, they head toward their camping destination. While Ronnie (Ian McElhinney) drives the camper van, the passengers in the back sing together.

Nathan has to stop so he can throw up. Nina sends Tyler a message to see if the money transferred. Hannah explains it was a dodgy burger Nathan ate last night. Zander (Chukwudi Iwuji) sits down with Leni. He makes her admit that she never liked Tyler before he insists it is better that he knows now. Zander urges Leni to talk to Felix because he needs to know too. At the campsite, Ronnie offers to help Ruth (Deborah Findlay), but she refuses his assistance. When Hannah pulls up, the others learn that Nathan has been puking and needs to lie down. Hannah tells her mother that he microwaved old takeout in the middle of the night. Ronnie asks her if she is fine sleeping in the tent with Nathan and the kids.

Although she doesn’t want to do that, she relents and says fine. Hannah takes Nathan a bowl just in case and jokingly reminds him that you don’t microwave a dodgy burger. She tells him he’ll be missed at the campfire songs later. Hannah joins Rose who begins worrying that this could be a sign that they have another man down. She tells Rose that it is just a sign that Nathan is an idiot. At home, Tyler (Damien Molony) gets up and finds Nina’s note for him. Rose and Hannah talk about the campsite and how far it is from a Starbucks. Rose says that is why they love it, but Hannah isn’t sure about that. Nina runs around trying to get bars on her phone. She explains she is just checking in on the house to make sure it went through okay.

Ruth joins them with wine. Rose is adamant that this is the place they used to come and that is what matters. She believes James would’ve loved it although he never got to see it. They sit around the campfire as Rose tells Gael that James would’ve liked him. They thank James for bringing them together in what they’ll call the family trip. Rose complains about Nina for being on her phone the whole time. When Nina asks if they’ll watch her daughter, Rose finishes her sentence. Nina fires back by saying at least she has one. Hannah tries to find out what is going on with her. Nina says he promised to call to confirm it had gone through. Hannah explains to Ruth that it is the estate agent about the new place.

Vinnie (Toby Oliver) joins his father in the tent as Nathan insists he is trying. Nathan says his father always knew what to say. He used to flatter himself that he was like him, but Nathan knows he is not. He claims Vinnie is more brilliant than him and he is failing here. Vinnie asks if that is why he keeps deciding to be a dad. Nathan knows he messed up so he apologizes, but it gives him comfort knowing the first three turned out to be amazing. He hopes that the kid will fit into the family one day since his father never told him he’d fit with them. Vinnie confesses he hates the countryside. Hannah approaches Rose to tell her to ignore Nina, but Rose says it is the true because she is never going to have a kid.

Rose gives her the letter from the wife of the guy who got James’s heart so she can read it. Hannah reads the letter that says what the gift James gave them means. They say families are the bridge to your past and your future. He has given her husband his future back and given them hope. Today was the first day he got to see his children. It is the first day they all believed he might live. She knows it can’t take away the pain of Rose’s loss, but she hopes it gives her some comfort to know James lives on in their family.

There won’t be a day when they don’t thank James and Rose for this. The letter is signed with the name Prisha. Hannah comforts her sister until Nina arrives and apologizes to her for being a proper cow. Rose agrees to take Cora so Nina can handle her phone thing. Ruth comes over to tell them there are sausages though they’ll have to be quick. She asks Hannah what is wrong with Nina. When she learns about the affair with Tyler and them buying a house together, Ruth immediately says they need to stop her. She reveals that a freezing injunction was taken out against Tyler to protect Zander’s assets only yesterday. Hannah can’t believe she didn’t say anything, but Ruth argues she didn’t know and doesn’t know everything.

When they catch up with Nina, they learn that she already signed an agreement and transferred the funds to the developer’s account. The developer is a friend of Tyler’s. They have the break the news to Nina that Tyler is lying to her because he is a fraudster. Ruth explains he is dexterous at running multiple accounts and multiple cellphones. She asks how she knew that the transaction went through. Tyler tricks people into giving him their money. Nina wants to go home. She begins freaking out and asking Ronnie for a ride to the train station. Nina tells Ruth she gave Tyler her money and hopes he’ll call her back. Hannah asks Vinnie to get their car keys while Nathan tries to find out what is going on.

Tyler checks his messages before stealing the credit card from Nina’s purse. She gets a voicemail message from him confirming that the transfer has gone through. Tyler insists he tried and wanted it to be right this time, but he couldn’t stay. He wants her to know that it meant something no matter how long it lasted. When Nina gets home, she finds that Tyler and all his things are already gone. She begins throwing stuff while calling herself an idiot. Ruth and Rose trying to comfort her. At the campsite, Gael plays a guitar while Liv (Elizabeth Roberts) asks her mother how she knew Nathan was the one. Hannah doesn’t think there are ones. Instead, there are several of them, but she knew Nathan was a good guy.

He used to make her laugh a lot although she knows every one of his jokes now. Hannah admits that is great in so many ways. She explains that Nathan has surprised her, delighted her, and irritated her. Since he loved her and has shown her so much, Hannah can’t imagine a world without her father. She tells Liv not to be scared of loving someone or the adventure until she can’t imagine a world without them even if it doesn’t play out the way she wants. Hannah urges her to say yes to life as it begins raining harder. They decide to pack up and go home although they end up leaving the tent behind. Ruth tells Nina she called the card company and froze all her accounts. Tyler is gone and it is in the hands of the police now.

When Nina says she is embarrassed, Ruth and Rose argue there are worse things to be. She asks her mother what she should do now. Ruth doesn’t think she should ask her since she mucked up the engagement to Ronnie. Rose believes Ronnie is a good man and it is easy to see why Nina is attracted to such bad men because her mother was too. She encourages her mother to go get Ronnie back. Rose promises to stay since her flat doesn’t feel like home anymore. While bringing their stuff inside, Nathan lets the door shut leaving them locked out. Hannah doesn’t want to wake the kids so they decide to sleep in the camper van. After laughing about the past, Hannah confesses she wishes Nathan wasn’t having a kid with someone else.

Nathan apologizes for all of it. She forgives him and asks him to do the same. Nathan forgives her for every slight even when she didn’t know. He also forgives her for every time she didn’t take his side, missed moment, personal indiscretion, and emotional infidelity. Nathan also forgives her for that night. He calls her his best friend before questioning how they do this. Hannah confesses she doesn’t know as they begin hugging. In the morning, Christie calls Hannah and leaves her a voicemail. Nathan tells her that her feet are freezing.

When Kate (Lara Pulver) arrives with coffee, she hears them laughing in the camper van. They open the camper door as Kate explains that Nathan sent her a message. Nathan tries to get his shoes on before Kate can leave, but she doesn’t give him time. Rose tells Nina that she’ll take care of Cora because she needs to go back to work. She says Nina is just as stubborn as their mother. Nina suggests affairs don’t work out and reveals all four of them are unmarried and unattached for the first time, but Rose says she was very much married and Hannah isn’t entirely unattached. She also believes this was all of Nina’s own making. Nina believes she has a right to be bitter since she is down a quarter of a million quid and potentially without a job.

Rose admits that was stupid but argues she should try to claw back her letter of resignation. Hannah gives Nina advice moments later. She also reveals that Zander has called a senior management board meeting. Once Rose leaves them, Hannah tells Nina to hold tight to that little girl and hold her head up while bracing for truly humiliating groveling. They catch up with Ruth before entering the meeting room where Zander begins talking about Tyler. He tells them about information that has put Tyler’s reputation at stake and that they’ve severed all times with him. Zander reveals he will be taking time to reflect while Hannah takes over his duties as managing partner and will be supported by Ruth.

He admits they aren’t so far removed from the dramas and betrayals that they keenly observe within their working lives. Zander apologizes if he has tarnished the firm’s reputation in any way. He says to err is human and to forgive is divine. Zander hopes they can all forgive with time. After the meeting, Zander speaks to Hannah in her office about a management team meeting on Thursday. Hannah says a heads-up would’ve been night. Zander explains he’ll be away for a few weeks or months since he wants to spend time with his sister and feel the grass under his feet. He argues you can’t walk away from family no matter how hard we try. Hannah is instructed to make all decisions with the management team while he is away.

Although she is worried she can’t do this, Zander suspects others since he has absolute confidence in her. He doesn’t want to talk about Zander and the trail of toxic destruction that man has left for him. He wants to take his time. When he looks at Leni, he sees someone who doesn’t have that luxury. He explains that she is facing it and putting others before herself. Zander isn’t sure he is capable of that, but he’d like to try. Hannah wonders if they can complete a proper legal agreement that ensures Leni’s wishes are respected to get Felix and Leni talking again. It may give Leni a sense of control back. Hannah offers to talk to her because she doesn’t think that marriage is broken.

If a marriage can be fixed, it is worth a try. Zander encourages Hannah to do what she can. As he leaves, Hannah tells Zander he is wrong because he does put people before himself, especially when they make mistakes. Rose runs into Glen (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) who is busy cleaning up litter at the church. He offers to pick up the girls later since he isn’t paying her. He admits he doesn’t want them getting too attached. Rose understands that. Before she leaves, Glen recommends going to see that memorial wall he told her about. As Ruth enters Hannah’s office, she is asked why she didn’t marry Ronnie before. It never felt like the right time since they have kids and June. Now, there are a million excuses she can let get in her way and she let one trip her up again.

Ruth does want to marry him though. Hannah asks her mother how she’ll know she is going to fit into Ronnie’s life. She knows because Ronnie fits into her life. Ruth asks what happened in the camper van with Nathan. Hannah says they slept. Hannah confesses that she has missed Nathan so much, but it is too late now. Ruth doesn’t believe it is ever too late. Moments later, Hannah listens to Christie’s voicemail message as he asks her not to forget about New York. He tells her he loves her and the ball is in her court. When Hannah leaves, she has a panic attack and has to stop to calm herself. Nina goes to Zander in hopes of apologizing. He asks whether she is going to apologize for betraying him and sleeping with someone they know isn’t worth their time.

He should find comfort in knowing Tyler didn’t take his life savings like he did hers. Nina insists he needs to read her letter, but Zander says it is his letter since it is addressed to him. She tells him to just get it over with and says he accepts it or that she is fired. Zander has already lost one employee and can’t afford to lose two so he is going to sit and think about it. She is going to have to wait because she doesn’t get to just resign after what she has done. Later, Ruth approaches Zander to get him to sign something. She knows he is hurt and has every right to be, but nothing he can do will be as bad as what Nina is doing to herself. In many ways, Nina has always been the most fragile of her children.

She believes that is true of those who burn bright because they often fly too close to the light. Ruth claims they’re cockroaches since they survive the toughest fallout. Rose finally goes to the memorial that Glen told her about. She reads about some of the people who died while saving others. Hannah goes to Leni to tell her she can’t let her do this because she has so much of life still to live. She wonders if Leni is afraid of talking to Felix because he’ll try to talk her out of it too. Hannah questions whether you can really neatly tie up life and just slip away with assisted dying. Leni is asked to tell him because the worst thing will be not telling the one who really loves you. Hannah wants to help her navigate that conversation by drawing up an advanced decision to refuse treatment.

She tells her more about the advanced decision that can allow her to explore her options, find out what her family’s role will be, and decide the terms of her care. Although no one can say which way life will fall, there are decisions that you can control. While life is finite and fleeting, Hannah believes the vows she made were made for these moments. She argues that Felix should be allowed to honor those and she should accept them. Hannah doesn’t think the end of her life means the end of her marriage. Nathan meets with Kate to explain things. She wants to know whether he loves her. Nathan says yes as he begins apologizing and saying he spent half his life with Hannah. Nathan and Hannah look through the divorce paperwork.

When Ronnie shows up, he finds that Ruth has put together a romantic dinner to win him back with help from Liv and Gael. Ruth has given it a lot of thought. It takes a lot to divorce and even more to marry again. She hasn’t been married for a long time and wasn’t sure she’d survive it the first time. When Ruth thinks about her life before and after Oscar had gone, it was Ronnie who taught them how to ride a bike, picked up Nina when she was drunk, and encouraged Hannah to consider law. She admits Ronnie has always been her neighbor and very best friend. History has taught her that nothing lasts and that made her bolt when she was given the chance to make it permanent. Ruth would like to unbolt now and say she wants to marry him.

Ronnie accepts that before they begin dancing in front of the camper van. Hannah arrives in time to see them dancing. Inside, Hannah knows Ronnie was never not going to marry her. He admits he found out a long time ago that it is about sitting it out with Ruth. Lost time is never found again so they have to make the most of this little life they have. Hannah looks at her rings as the episode ends.

 

The Split Review

The final season of The Split has been an emotional roller coaster with the loss of James, Leni’s health, Tyler’s betrayal, and Hannah’s big decision. At the very least, Ruth and Ronnie will get a happy ending. The show has done a good job of juggling everything without jumping around too much. Therefore, it is easy to follow the story and know exactly what is happening from one moment to the next.

Although some of the clients aren’t totally realistic, The Split still feels authentic and I think these things could really happen. More importantly, the show’s emotions are genuine making it easy to care for the characters. I am eager to see how things are going to end, but I’ll also miss watching The Split. It is a double-edged sword.
