The Road Trip Series 1 Episode 5 Recap

Pit Stop – The episode begins with a brief debate about a pit stop at an upcoming five-star resort, on Marcus’s (David Jonsson) dime. All is practically decided once Addie (Emma Appleton) is onboard. Rodney (Angus Imrie) makes the mistake of digging into the magic mushroom chocolate.

While Marcus learns that his father cut off his expense accounts because of the car wreck, Deb (Isabella Laughland) tries to tell Addie why she wants her to move out. It isn’t very long before all attention is on Rodney, who is pretty spaced out by now.

Even though Marcus’s cards have been canceled and Dylan (Laurie Davidson) lost his wallet, the gang has no option but to stop at Hotel Casa Reino Unido thanks to Rodney. Addie heads for the bar and leaves the group at the front desk before the clerk even shows up. When the clerk does show up, she initially claims the hotel is booked due to it being karaoke night. After a bit of negotiating on Marcus’s part, she gives them a no-show family room.

Before checking into their room, Dylan tries to convince Addie to talk. She practically snubs him and says that she’s only trying to have some fun and that she does when Britta Broad (Michael Marouli) takes the stage.

After her confrontation with Miles (Adrian Lukis), Addie started sleeping in her van and freshening up in the teacher’s lounge when she could. One of her students, Justin (Luke Garner-Greene) catches on to this and gives her an extremely hard time. He even refers to her as a tramp on one occasion. Dylan does try to contact her but she ignores his call and when they do speak, it is very briefly. After Lla (Gloria Obianyo) fails to get pregnant again, Deb offers to carry the baby.

By this time, in the past Addie is getting drunk and rowdy. At one point, she not only tells Deb that she is going to sell the van but she gets up on stage and sings. Things don’t appear to be going that much better for Dylan when Marcus practically finds him wallowing in his own filth. After a bit of convincing, Dylan agrees to let Marcus try to fix things between him and Addie. When Marcus reaches out to Deb to find Addie, she tells him that she’s staying at Dylan’s flat. Although he knows differently, he pretends to be mistaken. This is when Marcus drives by the school and sees Addie and Etienne (Michael Wallace) together.

While Addie is on stage singing her heart out, Dylan tells Marcus that he wishes he could get inside her head to see what’s going on. Marcus tells him there is no need because Addie is exhibiting classic abandonment symptoms (Push everyone away before they have the chance to abandon you). Deb overhears the conversation and runs to the stage to join her. Before they know it, the entire group is on stage, including Rodney, who is still tripping. In fact, it is his falling off stage that gets them kicked out.

Despite Marcus’s best efforts, he isn’t smooth enough this time to trick the clerk, but Addie’s open and honest approach appears to work. The clerk lets them go to their room under the condition that they stay there. Back in the room, Addie tells the group that there is something she wants to tell them but doesn’t know where to begin. This is when the story abruptly cuts back to the night Marcus saw Addie with Etienne at the school. He also sees her leave with him because he convinces her to shower at his apartment so he doesn’t spend the night worrying about her. Once there, he comes on to her rather strongly and tries to chalk it up to a big misunderstanding. Despite this, she manages to leave without further incident.

By the time Addie meets with Dylan the next day for lunch, Marcus has told him all about seeing her with Etienne. He automatically assumes she cheated and vilifies her. Although she doesn’t admit or deny anything, she storms off and tells him not to call her or text. In the past, Marcus tries to make up for his error by calling the police but this only makes the group mad. It makes Dylan so mad that he throws a punch at him but smashes his into the wall when Marcus dodges it. Their brief discussion about this later doesn’t go much better.

Shortly after the blowup, Dylan asks Addie why she couldn’t tell him the truth. She tells him that he seemed so angry and she didn’t want him to know that she didn’t have anywhere to go. When Dylan tells her that he hasn’t stopped thinking about her after the split, she admits the same. Back in the motel room, Rodney is coming down from his high and tells Deb that if he doesn’t wake up, he wants Cherry (Dinita Gohil) to know that he tried to get to her. Deb uses her phone to distract and put him to sleep. At the same time, Addie falls asleep in Dylan’s arms.

While Dylan and Addie wake next to each other, Rodney wakes in the comfort of Deb and Marcus. The whole day yesterday was practically a blur to him. Addie tells Dylan that their talk meant a lot to her, so much so that she is ready to move on from him. Dylan tries to convince her that their breaking up was a mistake but he doesn’t get long to do so thanks to Cherry’s call.

The episode ends with the group learning that Rodney is in love with Cherry and a wedding crasher. He steals the van and leaves them stranded.

The Road Trip Review

Not one of my favorite episodes of the series but it was nice to finally have the whole entire story laid out. I knew the cheating allegation would be some blown-out-of-proportion scheme like most of the series. I am not trying to downplay what Addie went through or say Etienne wasn’t in the wrong because that is not the case at all.

I had a feeling that Rodney was in love with Cherry. It was almost apparent, although I didn’t mention it before. It probably would have been more fulfilling if the news came out while he was tripping, but I guess you get what you get. All in all, not a bad episode, and can’t wait to see how this ends. An easy 6 out of 10.
