Beyond Repair – Episode 4 begins with Deb (Isabella Laughland) trying to figure out what is going on while Addie (Emma Appleton) speeds away from Rodney (Angus Imrie), Marcus (David Jonsson), and Dylan (Laurie Davidson). For the moment, all Addie has to offer is that she is going to Cherry’s (Dinita Gohil) wedding as promised, but Deb does somehow convince her to get the rearview mirror fixed. Things are not going much better for the boys, especially now that Marcus has admitted that he tried to kiss Addie. It doesn’t help when he claims that it was just a test.
After a ceiling incident in her flat, Addie crashes with Dylan for a few days. On the first night, she learns his flat is attached to his parent’s next door. She jokingly gives him a hard time about this but it isn’t long before they are making out. What was supposed to be just a couple of days turns into weeks, possibly months. At one point, Addie even receives word that her old place has been condemned. At this point, Dylan has already assumed she moved in but proceeds to ask her anyway after learning about this development.
While Addie and Deb try to have the mirror replaced at Ronaldo’s (Fran Calvo), Marcus admits to Dylan that he kissed Addie because he wanted to screw their relationship up. Because of her poor Spanish, Addie misinterprets Ronald telling her to come back in 15 minutes to have the mirror replaced. Instead, she hears, comes back in 50 minutes and the mirror will be replaced. At the same time, the boys catch what initially appears to be a lucky break when a lone, drunk lady stops to give them a ride. Although she is only taking them back to her village, she claims there’s a bus stop there.
For the first time, Deb gets angry and storms off after Addie refuses to tell her the truth about Dylan, Marcus, and the kiss. As this happens, Ronaldo closes up his shop and Addie’s van.
In the past, Addie comes home late one evening at about the same time as Dylan’s dad. Although she has to awkwardly explain her presence, he treats her with respect and even invites her over to dinner one evening. Dylan doesn’t appear all that thrilled when she shares this with him moments later.
Just as Bria (Isobl Akuwudike) leaves Addie’s classroom to catch her bus, Etienne (Michael Wallace) shows up for a brief conversation. They discuss Bria’s audition for Dartmouth Music College and the 80-quid entrance fee. Etienne makes a donation after telling Addie that the school doesn’t have the funds. Later that day, Addie meets Deb at a café to discuss the Dylan/Dad situation. Deb tells her that Dylan isn’t hesitant because of her but because of his dad. The dinner date actually turns out to be a decent evening of discussion about education and passion. Miles (Adrian Lukis) even invites Marcus to put Dylan more at ease but when the two of them go off to the kitchen alone to prepare dessert, Miles offers Marcus a promotion to London. Marcus turns it down perhaps out of loyalty to Dylan.
In the present, Deb briefly discusses her storming off on the phone with Lla (Gloria Obianyo) before Addie interrupts. They briefly discuss their childhoods and feelings of abandonment before Deb tells her that she needs to stop pushing people out of her life. This is when Addie realizes that she’s left the boys by the road and immediately goes to collect her van. Before Addie can take two steps, Deb tells her that she wants her to move out. Addie doesn’t take this so well.
Things aren’t going much better for the boys thanks to Sofia’s (Elena Vilaplana) pessimistic outlook on relationships. Her point is all but proven when Marcus admits that he kissed Addie because he was vindictive, petty, and an all-around d*ck. Dylan does not take the apology so well and this leads to another argument.
When Addie and Deb return to Ronaldo’s to find the van locked up, it causes Addie to remember Miles showing off his vast music collection on the same night as the dinner. This discussion doesn’t get very far thanks to a business call that Dylan is also called in on. Once alone, Marcus briefly jokes about his and Addie’s kiss and timesharing Dylan. Later that evening, Addie surprises Dylan when she tells him that she had a good time at the dinner. This leads to him telling her that he wants to be more like her and do something that he loves. She encourages him to pursue his dreams. This is also the night that they profess their love for each other.
On the day of her audition, Bria shows up 5 minutes before she has to go on with a broken violin. Addie and Etienne who were already freaking out are now in full panic. Etienne rearranges the lineup while Addie takes advantage of Miles’ earlier generous offer. Bria nails the audition. Although Etienne asks Addie out for a drink to celebrate, she turns him down to attend Dylan’s gig. The crowd also loves Dylan.
In the present, Marcus is still trying to apologize to Dylan, who wants to hear nothing of it. It doesn’t help that Sofia encourages Dylan to show no mercy, as she says she is going to do when she reunites with Ronaldo. When Rodney finally tells them that Sofia is drunk driving, an apology becomes their least concern. Rodney quickly stages an escape by pretending to be sick and getting Sofia to pull over so they can run. Although Marcus and Dylan get away scot-free, Rodney narrowly escapes. After a good laugh over their ordeal, Dylan is finally ready to accept Marcus’s apology, under the condition that he has told him everything. Unfortunately for Marcus, there is one more thing and it was a big thing.
Dylan and Addie return home from the gig to find a very heated Miles waiting in Dylan’s flat. Miles is extremely upset that Addie borrowed the violin without asking and he is especially cruel about it. It doesn’t help matters that Dylan does nothing to take up for her and even almost acts like Addie brought the confrontation on herself when Miles is gone. It was Marcus who told Miles about Addie borrowing the violin.
While Dylan and Marcus squabble over Marcus’s tattling, in the present, Rodney spots the van at Ronaldo’s Garage. Before Rodney can tell them what he’s discovered, Dylan and Marcus come face-to-face with Deb and Addie. Once the group manages to put their difference aside long enough, they realize that Sofia’s Ronaldo is also the same Ronaldo who worked on Addie’s van. Not only does a quick trip to the Villa Rosa confirm this to be true, but it also leads to Dylan convincing Rolando and Sofia to put their differences aside. Addie apologizes to Dylan for running off and he apologizes for letting Marcus come between them.
The episode ends with showing that it was the confrontation between Addie and Miles that led to her moving out, but before that, Marcus reveals to the group that it was Addie who cheated on Dylan.
The Road Trip Review
I must admit that I am enjoying the series but there are some incredibly annoying things. First, everything about Deb and her unconventional relationship is bad and unneeded, but my biggest complaint is how everything is blown out of proportion. For instance, the borrowing of the violin, the kiss, and now the cheating. The kiss should have only been a big deal between Marcus and Dylan because Addie refused and it was Marcus who made the approach. Now, I bet the cheating is going to be the same way. It will probably happen when they are separated. Yes, I can see how both would be bothersome, but I still can’t help but feel as if they were blown way out of proportion.
I did enjoy the boy’s side road trip in this episode, as well as the unique connection between Sofia and Ronaldo. I’d give the episode a 5.6 out of 10.
