Pulled Over – Episode 3 begins with Dylan (Laurie Davidson) saying goodbye to Addie (Emma Appleton) after their hookup. He subtly asks about her summer plans but appears to want to say or do more. He does manage to ask if he can message her, which she agrees to.
Although it’s been a week after her summer and Addie hasn’t memorized all her students, a phone call with Deb (Isabella Laughland) suggests that everything is going well. Things with Dylan (Laurie Davidson), however, don’t appear to be going so well since they haven’t seen each other since their abrupt departure. Deb’s relationship, on the other hand, appears to be going great until she randomly tells her partner that she loves her.
Things don’t appear to be going much better for Dylan as his father grills him about the risk capacity report on the Harman account. Lucky for him, he has Marcus (David Jonsson) to cover for him. Addie is at work when she sends Dylan an enigmatic text asking if he wants to have a drink tonight or maybe not. Dylan doesn’t exactly know how to reply to the message and doesn’t get much help from Marcus. Dylan’s dad solves the problem for him when he interrupts and says he did such a good job on the Harman account that he wants him to meet the account holders for dinner tonight.
Things aren’t going so well in the present as Marcus tries to goad everyone into playing ‘Would you rather.’ Despite that, Rodney (Angus Imrie) makes things even more awkward when he expresses an interest in seeing Deb (Isabella Laughland) pump her boobs. He doesn’t get the opportunity thanks to Deb making Addie pull over. While she is pumping, Marcus overhears Deb telling her girlfriend that she is going to ask Addie to move out. While briefly trying to make sure he isn’t going to breathe a word to Addie, a girl on a motorcycle shows up to distract both of them.
At the same time, Dylan sticks his foot in his mouth when he apologizes to Addie about not being able to share some of the driving. It is when he says this that she realizes she never took him off the insurance. When they get back on the road, Dylan is behind the wheel and the girl on the bike follows them.
Dylan tries to lighten the mood when he gives Addie the privilege of choosing the driving music. The discussion doesn’t get much further than this thanks to Deb noticing that they are being followed. Things only get worse from here when Marcus and Deb get into an argument over who the girl is pursuing. Marcus tries to use his phone to see if his dating app registers her but his phone dies. Dylan won’t allow Marcus to use his phone which leaves him with no other option but to eat through the boredom. Marcus takes a bite of something that sets his mouth on fire. When he goes for Deb’s breast milk to soothe the burn, Deb grabs it and throws it out the window. The milk hits the girl on the bike, leading to her pulling them over and ultimately revealing her identity as an undercover cop.
As Addie and the group are pulled over, the story reverts back to the past to reveal that instead of refusing her offer, Dylan invited Addie to his work outing, although he didn’t tell her about it until she was there. Despite this, she can’t turn down the free drinks. Once inside, Dylan doesn’t get much time to spend with Addie thanks to his dad. Marcus is there to keep her company and plied with alcohol. Most of the night consists of drinking and discussing daddy issues until Marcus pulls her away elsewhere.
At the same time, Deb visits her girlfriend to apologize for dropping the love word. Much to Deb’s surprise, her girlfriend has been harboring a big secret of her own, she’s pregnant. Elsewhere, Marcus treats Addie to some of the world’s finest whiskey and tries to uncover more about her daddy issues. She tells him that her dad left her to start another family but left behind his van. Marcus surprises her when he says that she is far too interesting for Dylan but before he can allude to this Dylan interrupts. Although Addie practically storms off when he enters the room, she lets him join her for a drink where Deb works.
At the bar, Addie makes Dylan buy her and Deb drinks. Deb shares her big news about her girlfriend with them and this somehow inspires Dylan to tell them that he was an accident child. The discussion doesn’t get much further thanks to Deb getting up to get more drinks and Marcus’s constant calling. When Dylan finally puts his phone on silent, he asks Addie if they are finally on a date. Rather than answer him, she asks why he thinks it took so long for this to happen. He surprises her by admitting that he was scared and apologizes that she had to make the first move. She tells him that he can make it up to her and drags him on the dance floor. Just as their dancing leads into kissing, the story abruptly changes to the present.
When Agent Dolores Cabello (Olaya Lopez) gets to the window, she only speaks Spanish, leaving Dylan to poorly negotiate the whole deal. After getting the paperwork and before running it, Cabello tells them not to move. All is going well until Addie and the others jump out of the van and proceed to explain away their wrongdoings. Marcus makes things especially bad when he offers Cabello a bribe. As it turns out, Cabello does speak English and was only pulling them over for the missing mirror. Now, however, she wants to search the van. Although she spends several minutes searching the van and issues a fine, she doesn’t uncover anything illegal.
With everyone on edge and happy to be free, Marcus goes too far when Cabello is gone by claiming that he was right. This leads to a huge blowup about moral superiority that puts the story back in the past where Dylan and Addie are making out. Just as they are about to get intimate, they are interrupted by a drunken Marcus, who has just cut his arm to pieces on Marcus’s door. Although Addie mends up his arm, Addie is disturbed by Marcus’s behavior. Dylan practically drops everything, including Addie to see Marcus to the taxi.
In the present, Addie is so upset that she has stormed off and left the group. Dylan goes after her but not in a soothing way. He crosses the line when he tells her everything bad between them was her fault. This leads to her telling him about Marcus kissing her. The episode ends with Addie returning to the van and leaving Dylan, Marcus, and Rodney behind.
The Road Trip Review
I can’t say I am too upset by the way the story is progressing, although I wouldn’t mind seeing things go a bit further, a bit faster. I do enjoy the story and the setting, but at times it does seem like a woe-is-me story for the rich. I am just glad that the creators made the wealthy class diverse. I am not saying that love and betrayal aren’t a big deal because it is, especially in your formative years. Friendships end and develop this way all the time, but considering everything else going on in the world, running around all manic and depressed because your best friend tried to kiss a girl you hooked up with once seems a bit mild. That said, I am enjoying the story and would give the episode a 5.4 out of 10.
