The Road Trip Series 1 Episode 1 Recap

As this episode of The Road Trip begins, Adeline Rebecca Gilbert (Emma Appleton) prepares for her upcoming trip. Elsewhere, Dylan (Laurie Davidson) prepares for his speech for Cherry and Krish’s wedding. Addie has an invitation too. Deb (Isabella Laughland) finds out that Addie is already packing. Maya gives Dylan a copy of his speech and other items. Deb tells Addie she doesn’t have to go if she’s not ready to see him. Addie says she can’t let Cherry down. Deb tells her to be selfish for once. Maya shows Dylan the seating plan for the reception dinner. Addie tells Deb that they’ll be sitting far away from him and he probably won’t even say hi. When Marcus (David Jonsson) arrives, he asks Dylan about the plane tickets. Dylan jokes they’ve been put into economy seating. They leave moments later.

When they’re alone, Deb’s friend Ila tells her that she needs to speak to Addie because they need the space now. Deb insists she’ll speak to her in the van. Addie still won’t tell her what actually happened. In the van, Deb tells Addie the trip is going to be brilliant since they haven’t hung out just the two of them in ages. Addie forgot to tell her that Rodney (Angus Imrie) is tagging along. He’s from Cherry’s work. Rodney brings a plastic bag just in case he gets travel sickness. Dylan and Marcus talk about the latter’s drinking. Marcus says Cherry is a psycho for inviting her, but he doesn’t think she’ll show up anyway. Rodney talks to the girls about Cherry and the things he sees in reception. When Addie misses the turn, Deb tells her no one is behind them so she can reverse. Addie ends up causing Marcus to crash. Addie is shocked to see Dylan get out of the other car. After the intro, the Porsche is taken away from the scene.

Dylan tells Marcus the flight is gone and there’s nothing else. Marcus tells Addie that she can’t just leave them there. Marcus argues with Addie and Deb briefly. Dylan pleads with them to exchange insurance details so they can go on their way. Marcus is serious about making them take them. Addie and Rodney vote no. Dylan says they’ll see them at the wedding if they make it. When they’re alone, Addie still won’t tell Deb what happened. She only says that Dylan ended it. Marcus returns with a call from Cherry who asks Addie to bring them along. Addie relents and gives Dylan and Marcus a ride. Rodney asks why they all hate each other. Two years earlier, Addie arrives at their destination. Addie tells a woman that she’s the housekeeper for the summer. She isn’t good with Spanish so the woman’s words mean nothing. Addie takes the keys and heads inside to look around. Addie says the pay is fair considering she gets an accommodation.

Later, Addie looks at potential matches. She goes on a date with a match. The date doesn’t go well. Dylan overhears and laughs at Addie. A bit later, Addie ends up seeing Dylan hitchhiking. She ignores him and keeps going. Dylan ends up arriving at the place where she is working and jumping into the pool. He tells her he was laughing at her joke. Addie claims he ruined the whole date, but Dylan argues it wasn’t going well anyway. Dylan shows her a message from his friend Grace and explains her family owns the place. He agrees to stay out of her way and she won’t even know he’s there. In the present, Rodney asks why they hate each other. He learns that Addie and Dylan are exes. Dylan and Marcus learn they’re blocked by Addie on Facebook. Rodney says they’re only missing baby pictures. Deb says Addie is an aunt now. Rodney suggests playing two truths and a lie. Addie believes Dylan lied and their entire relationship was built on a lie.

In a flashback, Dylan asks Addie for a lift to the shops. In the van, Addie says this is her last summer before he becomes a teacher. Dylan says he doesn’t have a girlfriend. He just needs some time alone to work on himself. Dylan explains he’s bumming around and trying to figure out his life’s meaning. He’d love to be a musician but it doesn’t pay either. Addie says she’s going to teach music. At the store, Dylan offers to pay for Addie’s items since she covered petrol. She agrees to let him pay for one item. As they leave, Dylan asks her to drive back by the river because it’s beautiful. When they get back, Dylan tells Addie that he fancied his music teacher. They go inside for a drink only to find Marcus rummaging through the refrigerator. Addie and Marcus are introduced. Marcus asks if they’ve slept together yet. He insists he’s joking. Marcus learns she’s the housekeeper. Addie doesn’t want him to take wine from the house because they’ll blame her.

Marcus tells her that Dylan is loaded. He says Dylan has a six-figure job waiting for him at his dad’s firm when he gets home. Marcus ends up breaking the bottle. Addie storms out of the room. Marcus messages Grace telling her she needs to get there now. Dylan leaves a bottle outside of Addie’s door and a note apologizing for misrepresenting himself. Addie goes looking for him only to find out that he’s with Grace. In the present, Addie and the others make it to the ferry. Dylan tries to talk to Addie about teaching. Marcus gets a call from his dad so he likely found out about the car. Addie tells Rodney that she quit teaching. Marcus argues that Addie ruined Dylan’s life. Deb and Marcus argue until Addie gets out of the van and Dylan goes after her. Dylan talks about how she writes people off so quickly. He was looking forward to seeing her at the wedding because he thought things might have changed. He thought she might want to talk about how things ended but she’s the same Addie.

Dylan asks why Deb said he ruined her life. He doesn’t remember it like that. Dylan confesses he still cares about her after everything that happened. Addie wants to forget everything including meeting him. Dylan and Marcus get their stuff and leave. Marcus soon learns that his dad left a voicemail and his license has been flagged by his insurance providers. He argues with his dad on the phone. Dylan offers to rent the vehicle since they won’t let Marcus do it. However, he soon finds out that his wallet is missing. The receptionist refuses to let Marcus rent a vehicle. Rodney sees them sitting nearby and suspects something is wrong. He says they can’t drive past them since Dylan is the best man. Addie reluctantly agrees to stop and check on them. Dylan suggests they could call Grace. Deb tells Addie they could just leave them. Marcus and Dylan get back into the van. In private, Deb asks Dylan about Grace (Hannah Dodd) and whether she’s the reason he left Addie.

She believes he left Addie without so much as a goodbye. Dylan says Addie broke up with him. They leave in the van.

The Road Trip Review

The opening episode of The Road Trip was decent and there’s real potential for Dylan and Addie’s relationship in future episodes. At this point, it’s just nice to see something besides another British crime drama. The series has the same feel as The Lovers and The Flatshare.

The latter isn’t really surprising given the circumstances although The Lovers was a bit stronger overall. As the series progresses, it could easily achieve the same level of romance and heart that those shows had. However, viewers may have to weed through a bit of annoyance along the way.

The primary flaw here is the show’s attempt to be humorous. While some viewers are going to enjoy this aspect of the series, there’s a good chance that many will not. The series is a bit more obnoxious and juvenile than it is effectively funny. It’s a bit too early right now, but the emotional element of the series may make it worthwhile.

The episodes appear they’ll be very easy to watch and digest. Plus, there’s an urge to find out what went wrong between Addie and Dylan in the first place. Therefore, this was a decent way to start the story even if it didn’t hit all the targets along the way. The opener scores a 6 out of 10.
