As this episode of The Pact begins, Christine (Rakie Ayola) looks at the pictures on Connor’s wall before getting mad and ripping them off. When she gets back into her car, she sees Connor in the backseat. She tells him that she doesn’t see him because she sees Liam. Beth (Lisa Palfrey) gets up and checks the phone. She finds a message from an unknown number discussing an upcoming meeting. Christine begins destroying the evidence she collected from Connor’s flat. At work, Will (Lloyd Everitt) tells his worker that he wants to get the hole sealed off promptly and they don’t even need to sign off for the environmentals. He is told it’ll be a few days. Samantha (Rebekah Murrell) notices something odd with Will’s clothes when doing the laundry. Beth runs into Christine after seeing the lights on. Beth shows her the picture of the message she found on Joe’s phone.
Christine suggests it is just a mate so she encourages Beth to go home and get some sleep. She explains that there is no reason to be rash. Beth reminds her that she still thinks the best of Harry despite all the evidence against him. When Beth recommends finding Harry, Christine asks her to focus on her husband and forget about hers. Gethin (Jacob Ifan) finds Megan (Mali Ann Rees) searching her dress because she lost one of her earrings. He found the bloody fabric so he asks her about it. Megan claims Jamie got upset about Liam and cut his hand on a bottle. He suggests having breakfast in bed, but Megan needs to pop home. Once she leaves, Gethin notices the earrings sitting on the table nearby. Beth is told that Christine is driving Kate’s car because she had to put her in a taxi last night.
Christine finds another picture in the car so she rips it and begins crying. Christine tries to get Jamie (Aaron Anthony) to talk to her before offering him something to eat. Will arrives to tell Christine that it is done and no one is going to find him. Megan joins them too and tells them what she told Gethin about the blood. After Megan asks where Connor’s body is, Will confirms he is in the mineshaft at the quarry. She wants to make sure he is actually dead. Will insists he was dead. He should know since he had to hold him. Jamie says he is sorry. Christine argues that this is no point in dwelling on this so they just need to get through it. She explains that they need a story that will answer all the questions, but it can’t be too far from the truth. She says Connor came to the wedding and Megan let him stay because she felt sorry for him. Although he had a good time, he could see once and for all that he wasn’t a part of their family.
They’ll say he left and they never saw him again. Christine encourages them to keep saying it in their heads. She promises that all the bad things will fade away because that is how the brain is wired. She tells them they haven’t done anything wrong even though Megan isn’t sure about that. Beth begins following Joe. Megan reads the card Connor left for her. When she opens the gift, she finds a picture of Connor with herself and Jamie as well as money. She gets a text from Gethin so she quickly responds. Beth watches Joe walk into HMP Westhall. He goes inside and meets Harry (Steven Mackintosh) who is happy to see his daughter’s wedding pictures. Harry tells him he isn’t dealing and instead is writing appeals and filing forms for other inmates. He is surprised when he sees a picture of Connor but doesn’t say anything about it. Harry walks over to a little boy to tell him to learn how to write his dad a letter.
Christine goes to the hospital where Kayla (Kristy Philipps) tells her she is going to need a C-section. She claims she forgot the coat because she got caught up with the wedding. Kayla keeps thinking she’ll wake up and the baby will be gone, but Christine promises she won’t let that happen. When they discuss someone being there when the baby is born, Kayla admits there is no one she’d want anywhere near him. Kayla asks her if she is okay before asking her to stay. Christine says she’ll see what she can do. Beth confronts Joe when he comes out of the prison. While going for a walk, Jamie finds a broken bottle that he uses to cut the palm of his hand. He repeats the story to himself while wrapping it up. Will tells himself the story as well. Owain (Callum Hymers) visits Jamie to give him a gift to make up for the other day. Jamie tells him he just wants to be left alone before shutting the door. Megan tells Gethin that Beth is downstairs just before their planned dinner.
Gethin isn’t excited about it so Megan promises she won’t be long. When Megan meets with Beth, she is told about her dad being in prison for white-collar stuff. He got struck off for prescription fraud but kept supplying himself and other addicts until he got caught. Megan learns how Joe has stayed in touch with him and how they met today because of the wedding. Beth thinks there might be more to it and that it could have something to do with Connor. Samantha asks Will what made him sick at the wedding. Before he can answer, their son calls so he leaves. Will reads to his son who keeps interrupting. Samantha listens to them. Harry scratches out Christine’s face in the picture of Connor that he stole. Christine sees Connor again before Kayla’s C-section begins. She zones out thinking about everything until the baby arrives. Megan catches up with Jamie and tells him that he didn’t have to cut his hand for real. He has been practicing his lines although he isn’t sure it is working.
She tells Jamie that she is going to see their dad today before inviting him to come. Will takes his son to the café as Megan and Jamie question whether they should tell him. When he comes in, Will tells them that the cement is coming in tomorrow. Megan tells him about Beth finding their father who is in prison. He gets upset when he learns that they’re going to go see him. Megan doesn’t know why they can’t question mom. Will reminds them that their dad left them. Megan shows him the money while explaining that Christine tried to bribe Connor like he said. Will doesn’t care because Connor is dead and Harry might as well be too. He blames Jamie for ruining the family. Before he leaves, he tells them to do what they want but not come crying to him later. Kayla suggests the nurse thinks she can’t do this, but Christine tells her that is in her head. Christine receives a voicemail from hospice.
Kayla reveals she wants to call the baby Liam because she always liked the name. Jamie and Megan go through the security checkpoint at the prison. They sit with Harry who admits he doesn’t know what to say. He offers to get Megan a wedding present when he gets out, but she says she doesn’t want anything from him. She just wants to know if Connor is his son. Harry claims he hadn’t heard of him until yesterday. He insists he was a good dad and did his best. Jamie mentions that Harry hasn’t even asked about him. Harry knows he works at the café and is seeing a boy from the chip shop. Jamie wants him to give a crap. He begins telling him who he is including that he wet the bed until he was 12. He hated being alone in the dark and often cried himself to sleep. Will told everyone at school so he got bullied there. Christine found out and got mad at Will. Jamie thinks Harry messed them up and they took it out on each other. He is glad that they’re the ones who get to leave this time.
Harry asks them to come back before confessing that he cheated on their mom. It was his fault, he regretted it forever, and Connor was his son. He didn’t say because his mom was a vulnerable patient. Harry didn’t know she had a baby until he saw the picture from the wedding. As for the mom, she died years ago. He was surprised she lived long enough to have Connor. That one mistake ate away at him and destroyed everything except his love for them. He hoped they’d be able to rebuild something when they’re ready. Christine visits her mother at the hospital to tell her that the results show it has gotten much worse. They’re looking at weeks or days. Christine gives her cigarettes since she might as well treat herself. Her mother asks to go outside. Her mother tells her that she didn’t smoke until she had her so she is the cancer. Christine says she spent her entire life looking after people including her mom when she was drunk and beaten.
At home, Samantha confronts Will about not going to the counseling sessions. She questions whether he went instead and whether it was the same place he went during the wedding. Samantha finds it odd that he had to wash his suit right away. They continue arguing until Samantha says he should go to his mother’s. Will blames a cup to the floor breaking it near her feet. Christine gets a message saying it is gone. Connor shows up and asks what she did before she throws away the cigarettes and the one she was smoking. She is surprised to see Will and immediately asks what he did. Jamie and Megan talk about Connor being one of them. She wonders why their mom would’ve been so against Connor. She offers to tell their mother about Harry. When they tell her, Megan gives the money back and says it was Harry who was keeping the secrets. Christine claims she was trying to use the money to make Connor go away before it ended in tears.
She recommends keeping Sam and Gethin out of it. She thinks Beth will drop it once she realizes that Connor is gone. Gethin visits Megan later. Harry stabs Christine’s face with a pen over and over before trashing his cell. Christine is shown visiting Harry. She coaches him to tell the kids that he cheated on their mom so she won’t spill his secrets. The police arrive as the family has dinner together.
The Pact Review
This episode of The Pact had some interesting moments as the characters dug themselves deeper into trouble while trying to plan a possible escape. The absence of Connor is noticeable because the character elicited different emotions at different points. It was easy to despise him while feeling sorry for him at certain points and that is pretty much gone now that he is likely dead.
The revelations keep coming since Christine obviously knew where Harry was all this time and forced him to take the blame for their failed marriage it seems. The casting here is an issue especially that of Steven Mackintosh as the father. The performance is great but that choice really requires viewers to ignore reality for a few seconds. Of course, that could be another twist.
The story remains the best part of The Pact so far since it is genuinely intriguing with just enough twists and turns. The season probably could’ve been four episodes instead of six since the episodes are noticeably slow at times. I actually want to find out who Connor is, what happened to Harry, and whether the characters will be punished so that should say something about the quality of the story.
The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of The Pact can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our work by following this link.
