Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions, has announced a new slate of upcoming projects in partnership with Netflix. The content includes fiction, non-fiction, and kids and family content in series and feature film form. The announcement comes following the success of existing projects, including American Factory, Crip Camp, and Becoming. Higher Ground Productions intends to make new project announcements in the coming months.
Barack and Michelle said, “We created Higher Ground to tell great stores. This group of projects builds upon that goal and the incredible path forged by films like Crip Camp, Becoming, and the Oscar-winning American Factory.”
A handful of projects are currently in different stages of development and set to be released over the next several years. The titles below are all working titles.
Films
Exit West – This feature film is based on the critically-acclaimed novel novel Mohsin Hamid. The love story is set against a global migration enabled by a supernatural phenomenon. Exit West follows two people who want to build a better life together while yearning for the home they may never see again.
Satellite – This science fiction feature film is written by Ola Shokunbi and produced by Stephen Feder and Kiri Hart for Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T Street.
Tenzing – Tenzing is a feature film based on the true story of Tenzing Norgay, who is the first man to reach the summit of Everest along with Sir Edmund Hillary. Viewers will learn about the story of the unsung hero and the unique bond he formed with another outside that allowed them to reach the summit and make history together.
The Young Wife – This feature film follows 29-year-old Celestina on the day of her first wedding or party. As the guests flood in, a storm approaches and Celestina finds herself out of sync.
Series
Firekeeper’s Daughter – This series is based on the debut novel by Angeline Boulley which is scheduled to publish in Spring of 2021. This YA thriller follows an 18-year-old Native girl who reluctantly goes undercover in a police investigation on her Ojibwe reservation. Mickey Fisher, who is known for Reverie and Extant, will serve as the showrunner.
Great National Parks – This natural history docuseries explores some of the more amazing national parks and wild spaces in the world. The show will shine a spotlight on magnificent species and habitats.
