Best Served Cold – As the seventh episode of The Night Agent begins, Ashley Redfield speaks about the campaign on the phone while Maddie plays with another kid nearby 14 years ago. Ashley pauses to yell at Maddie and tells her to give the toy to Sarah. Later, Maddie overhears Ashley yelling for Sarah outside. When she looks through the window, she sees her father pulling Sarah’s body from the pool. After that, Maddie claims she can wish her back. Ashley blames her since she was supposed to be watching Sarah. In the present, Matteo (Andre Anthony) makes Maddie (Sarah Desjardins) stand up so he can take a picture of her with the newspaper mentioning her kidnapping.
Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) throws the troll into the water before joining Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) nearby. Rose tries to convince him that they need to continue. She doesn’t know what she is doing to do without her aunt and uncle, but she isn’t going to give up. Peter suggests they sail someplace else and forget about all of it. Rose doesn’t think that is who he is. Rose reminds him that he told her to fight like hell when she first called and that is what he needs to do right now. They kiss and try to have sex, but Peter is still in immense pain. Once he overcomes it, they continue. Erik Monks (DB Woodside) and Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola) search through Peter’s stuff for information.
They find cards from Jim and immediately ask Patrick to run them for prints. Erik admits he doesn’t think this guy has Maddie. Chelsea agrees so Erik suggests they work this from more than one angle. He asks if she still has the flyer. President Travers (Kari Matchett) meets Diane Farr (Hong Chau) in private to talk about Maddie’s kidnapping. Diane says she is likely still alive and Peter always said his dad was framed. The President isn’t happy that Diane let him escape last night. Diane says he could be holding the Larkin girl hostage now too. Michelle suggests Diane demonstrated poor judgment by bringing in Peter.
Michelle is starting to question if she did. Diane reminds her that she had her back since day one. She says she did it because she believes in Michelle and her agenda can do so much good for this country. Michelle thinks she has too much on her plate right now. She asks her to focus on the day-to-day and take a step back from this case. Erik and Chelsea speak to Dylan (Markian Tarasiuk) who works with the environmental group. He identifies the professor as Paulo Bonetto. Dylan says Paulo was supposed to talk to Maddie last night about coming around. Once he learns that Paulo is dead, he questions whether he needs a lawyer.
Paulo thought he could recruit Maddie to help amplify New Leaf’s message. Dylan doesn’t recognize Peter’s picture, but he says the man in the sketch is Matteo. He doesn’t know his last name although Matteo started dating Paulo eight or nine months ago. Peter watches the Rome Tome show as it accuses him of being involved in Maddie’s abduction. Rose asks what his dad was accused of. Peter says classified documents were leaked that compromised US defense strategies around the world. The breach was traced back to the FBI’s counterintelligence division and his dad was section chief. His dad died before they could charge him and none of the evidence was ever made public. Rose wonders why he’d join the FBI then. Peter says his dad always had faith in the institutions.
Rose doesn’t think it is naïve although it isn’t a fight he can win right now. She argues that they could take the evidence to someone in the press. Rose says he has Liam’s badge and she can possibly crack his password so they can access the portal. Wick (Ben Cotton) shows the video of Maddie to VP Redfield and Diane. The kidnapper wants him to confess that he planned the metro bombing and covered it up. If he doesn’t tell who his accomplices were, Maddie will tell the world what he did. Diane thinks they should move forward because they have two days to find Maddie. She tells VP Redfield that it is a little late to begin caring about his daughter now.
He suggests he can confess, but deny it when they get his daughter back. Diane warns him that Maddie could be getting ready to publicly humiliate him. He is given his old nanny camera. Diane says Maddie was making noises to her therapist and Dr. Hennings gave them a heads-up. He should watch it because Maddie wants to ruin him. Wick tells him that they’ve made digital copies. Maddie tries to escape by kicking a hole in the wall. Matteo comes in and tells her that no one is going to hear her. He goes on to say Paulo was using her for his propaganda campaign. Maddie learns that he wants revenge so she suspects her father did something. She thinks she can help since she hates her father.
She has a video that will end him, but they’ll have to get it. To stop Matteo from leaving, Maddie gives him the address where the video should be. Rose learns that Hawkins was looking into 12 suspects just before he died. Peter says they likely had a military background so that narrows the list to two people. One is Pedro Navarro who had an alibi that night. The other suspect is Colin Worley who died the day before the FBI was going to show up to interview him. They find that the file is thin so someone tampered with it or they never bothered looking into him. If they prove that Colin was the bomber, they can connect the whole thing to Turn Lake. Rose thinks they’ll have to visit the Office of Public Records to get a report about Colin’s death.
Erik and Chelsea give Diane and Ben an update regarding Peter. Chelsea tells them about Paulo trying to recruit Maddie to New Leaf. Erik argues that they should investigate the Matteo lead although Diane wants Peter to remain the main suspect. Erik says they’re only suggesting that they work this from another angle. Ben agrees with Diane so he tells Monks to stay on Sutherland. Later, Diane calls Wick to tell him they should pursue Matteo. Wick immediately recognizes the sketch. Maddie works on escaping until Matteo visits again. He tells her that the woman who lived in the house was murdered last week. Cops found a stolen baby at the scene. There was damage on a basement wall that makes cops believe they took something.
Maddie admits to secretly hiding the video in the basement. The only one who knew about it was her therapist. Ashley Redfield watches the video in which he curses her and throws her around. Maddie tells Matteo that she wanted to show the world who he really is, but she was afraid he would’ve killed her. He got into her head so much that she started doubting anyone would listen to her. Maddie again suggests they should work together. Matteo leaves and shuts her in. Once she is alone, she manages to break the spring from the bed. Ellen confronts Wick who says he sent Dale the discontinue code. He says things are getting messy so it is best to have less contact. Wick already knows about Dale’s death. Ellen isn’t willing to give up on the mission yet.
Wick doesn’t know where Peter is so he offers to tell her who Maddie’s kidnapper is. He offers to find Peter for her if she takes care of Maddie’s kidnapper. Peter and Rose go into town and steal a vehicle. He sends her into the records office to find out what she can about Colin’s death. The receptionist says she’ll need to fill out a form and present her ID. Rose tries to find a way to get out of that. Peter gets worried when people start looking at him while Rose tries to work her magic on the receptionist. Rose gets what she needs before leaving, but Peter had to speed away from onlookers. She is confronted outside by men with Rome Tome shirts. They try to arrest her until Peter arrives and distracts them.
Then, he says they need to switch vehicles. Erik and Chelsea speak to Jim Wilson who is a reporter with the Baltimore Sun. After admitting to sending Peter some birthday cards, he invites them in to talk. He reveals that Peter is his godson although it is complicated. His father was Jim’s best friend. Jim admits he thought the most likely culprit for leaking the files was Peter. His son didn’t take that well so he felt betrayed. Jim doesn’t know where Peter is or where he is going. He is adamant that Peter wouldn’t be involved in the Maddie kidnapping though. Jim tells them where he keeps his camper. When asked about his boat, he doubts Peter would remember where he docks it.
Chelsea asks where he docks it. Peter and Rose learn that the medical examiner found no sign of foul play and thought it was an overdose. He was in rehab previously so it is possible. His items were sent to a next of kin. There is an address although no name. He had a keycard to a company called Allontine Manufacturing. Rose is shocked to learn that it is a subsidiary of Turn Lake Industries. When they look at his arrest photos, it is Matteo so Peter thinks he is the bomber. They wonder if Turn Lake killed Worley to cover their tracks. They agree to seek out the next of kin. Erik tells Chelsea that no one has been to the camper. They decide to check the boat.
They confront Rose and Peter before making them get on the ground. As they’re arrested, Peter tells Rose it is going to be okay.
The Night Agent Review
The seventh episode of The Night Agent was okay although the story has been very predictable. It is impossible not to see certain things coming from a while away. Peter and Rose’s relationship continues to develop and it was taken to another level in this episode. Some performances are solid while others are noticeably bad. This episode showcased the latter multiple times unfortunately.
The series is watchable most of the time although there is certainly a lot of room for improvement. Personally, there is no real connection to the characters so any of them could be picked off without having any emotional impact. There just isn’t enough reason to cheer for any of the characters. If the series had been cut down to six or fewer episodes, I think the story would’ve been much tighter with fewer draggy scenes.
Much like the other episodes, this one was okay but it feels like crossing the finish line is becoming increasingly difficult. It scores a 5.5 out of 10. Im still with it actually and though it is not the most well thought out spy thriller, and while it is replete with completely unrealistic plot points and subtext, it is at least entertaining enough so far. I wish it had been six episodes instead of ten but that is probably more just because I am used to UK based shows.
Of course this all gets blown out of the water if the ending turns out to be really dumb.
Ill throw in that Peter must have forgotten his spycraft as he did not try at all to go grey man and hide in plain sight (Rose at least tried, wearing a brown cap and dark jacket). Peter also returned to the boat after firing a nautical flare, which was captured on video and posted to YouTube.
I was releived that the nanny cam was just the VP roughing up his daughter rather than him coming in with an open robe or “accidentally” dropping his towel while coming from the shower.
lol! My first thought with the nanny cam was some type of child porn or something along those lines. In terms of Netflix content right now, The Night Agent is near the top as bad as that is to say. I haven’t watched the new Last Kingdom show yet, but I wouldn’t want to compare shows to movies either.
Regardless, this was an easy watch with lots of eye-rolling moments, but it is decent enough if you go in with minimal expectations. The ending is okay for what it is although nothing that will make the series spectacular in any way. Agree it could’ve been 6 episodes and it probably would’ve worked better. Think Netflix tries to get a minimum of 8 – 10 episodes though so they can brag about watch times.
