Eyes Only – As the fourth episode of The Night Agent begins, viewers are shown the incident in which Erik Monks (DB Woodside) protects the President. Erik takes a bullet for him. In the present, Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola) enters the room and begins searching for pills now that she knows Erik was an addict. Erik confesses that he is still and addict an always will be. He is clean now and gets tested twice a week to prove it. He urges Chelsea to make the call and drum him out. Erik believes he can teach her things, but Chelsea isn’t sure about that. She says she grew up around junkies in East St. Louis.

She tells him he can’t do this job for the wrong reasons. Erik agrees before she leaves. Diane Farr (Hong Chau) tries to convince Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) to let her have the files on the hard drive. She can trust the President since Travers has been her friend since she ran for state rep. Diane says they need to finish the work started by Rose’s aunt and uncle. Rose says she and Peter (Gabriel Basso) can finish it. Diane asks what she found. Rose tells her about the address. Diane agrees to leave without the drive while they go to the address and try to find out what they can. She’ll figure out how to present this plan to the president. Rose asks her if Osprey means anything to her.

Diane says she’ll look into it. In the car, Rose tells Peter that she found thousands of files on the drive. When she asks about Omar, Peter says he is a Balkan dissident who heads the People’s Independent Front. He denied it when the PIF claimed responsibility for the metro attack. There was never any evidence that the PIF was involved. Rose did a search for Farr and Hawkins, but found nothing on the drive. Peter thinks it is odd that an engineering company would be all the way out there. They visit Lorna (Gabrielle Rose) who claims she doesn’t know Emma and Henry. She pulls out a gun and insists she can’t give them any answers.

Before they leave, Rose asks her if there is a rusted wagon out back. She remembers coming there as a kid. Lorna asks them if they were followed. Peter says no. Once they go inside, Lorna admits it has been years since she saw them. Lorna hadn’t heard about the murders because she stopped watching the news. She warns Peter that he has no idea what he is getting into. Rose says someone in the White House has turned traitor and they were part of the metro bombing. Lorna insists they didn’t say anything to her because her job was only to collect the intel. They were after blueprints for public infrastructure as well as building permits.

Rose suspects she had to notice something because she is the only lead they have left. Lorna says they were wonderful, loyal friends. The files she supplied dealt with city services, but they also wanted the schematics of buildings all in the same block. Lorna argues they can’t understand the files without her because they’re complicated schematics. She says they’re going for a ride. Paulo (Greyston Holt) tells Maddie (Sarah Desjardins) that there is someone he’d like to know better. Maddie would love to see his work when he is done. He comes over and checks on her work. They end up kissing before Paulo stops and says that was inappropriate of him. As they drive, Lorna tells Rose and Peter how she met Rose’s aunt and uncle.

Rose is surprised to learn that her aunt spoke Russian and even recruited a few to their side. Peter asks Lorna if the code name Osprey means anything to her. It doesn’t. Lorna finds out that Pete Sutherland’s boy works the Night Action line. She knows that Peter was on the metro that night. Once they reach the block, Lorna says something may happen there. Peter doesn’t notice any obvious targets before they agree to get off the street. Lorna says she’ll walk Rose through the files to see if she can figure out what they mean. Peter splits from them. Once they look at the files, Rose questions why her aunt and uncle would want information about the power grid and gas lines.

They can’t imagine what would be important enough to be a target around there. They find security footage and a folder for every address on the block. Lorna asks if she finds it strange that Peter was on the metro when it exploded and he is now investigating it. They want to search the drive for Peter’s name, but he comes in and interrupts them. Lorna makes a mess and asks him to get some paper towels. Rose searches for his name and finds nothing. In the bathroom, Peter feels the metro and learns it runs right underneath there. He suggests the bomb was meant to explode elsewhere, but didn’t because he stopped the train. When they look at the neighborhood schematics again, they find a major gas line that bisects a train tunnel.

If something were to hit the gas main, it would take out two full city blocks. Lorna says they need to find out what the traitor failed to accomplish a year ago. Erik and Chelsea watch Maddie as she hangs out with Harper. They argue about their methods. Chelsea insists his methods won’t work on Maddie. She says he needs to know Maddie better than she knows herself. Lorna prepares to say goodbye to Rose and Peter. Before she goes, she tells Peter that she didn’t know his father personally. She knew two agents who worked on his case and thought he was guilty. Lorna urges him to stop worrying about him and focus on Rose. Cisco (Curtis Lum) calls Peter to say the BOLO turned up the car he was looking for.

Peter tells him to do nothing until they get there. Meanwhile, Ellen and Dale bathe together. He says they can’t stay long because it is dangerous and he doesn’t want to become like the people who hire them. The boss calls while Dale is cooking. He sends Dale coordinates and wants him to get there quickly. When Peter arrives, he learns from Cisco that Korman has been knocking on some doors. They tell Peter about the house for sale and how someone might be squatting in it. While getting suited up, Peter finds Kevin and hands him to Rose. She waits outside while Peter and the cops storm the house. Lorna sits down before hearing footsteps approaching her.

She throws a knife at Dale, but it doesn’t hit its target. Once she is cornered and held at gunpoint, they ask her about speaking to the niece and her FBI friend. They threaten to torture her to find out what she told them. Chelsea’s coworkers watch the video of Erik being shot and seem impressed. They leave. When Erik enters, Chelsea closes the laptop. Peter and Rose check into a motel room and tell the receptionist that she is being stalked. Peter asks her to turn them away and call their room if anyone comes looking for them. Peter gets them something to eat while Rose reads up about Zadar. She wonders if someone in the White House offered him something to do the bombing so they could get their hands clean.

They laugh about the motel while eating. Peter admits he didn’t travel with Zoe as much as they would’ve liked because he was tuned out. He believes he should’ve talked to her more about what he was going through. Rose isn’t sure people have to constantly talk to be tuned into each other. In the morning, Rose wakes up and hears Peter snoring before going back to sleep. Ellen and Dale try to bury the body. Dale knew she wouldn’t go easy. Ellen says she was a real pro. Peter finally wakes up and learns the date range for the video is the week leading up to the bombing. Peter tells her about the suspect’s description in the metro bombing.

He has a rattlesnake tattoo on his side. Rose begins looking for someone that fits that description. Diane gets in touch with Peter and confirms Secret Service found spyware on her cell phone. When he tells her what they found, Diane says they have to share it with the FBI by the end of the day. Erik double-checks everything before leaving Maddie with her professor. She apologizes for yesterday only for her professor to kiss her. Paulo says he can’t do this because he could lose his job and she could end up in the middle of a scandal. Maddie suggests going somewhere private. Paulo insists no one can find out about this. Maddie can ditch the agents if that is what he wants.

Outside, Chelsea asks Erik what it felt like to take that hit in Ohio. He admits it hurt. Erik knows he might need this job to stay clean, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t up to it. Rose finds a woman sitting in the café for five hours talking to herself. Peter says she is talking into a microphone. The mystery man learns about the interrogation and is told Sutherland and the girl aren’t even close to them. Peter says the woman is Secret Service and he knows her. It turns out to be Chelsea. She must’ve been on someone’s protection detail. The mystery man is the Vice President and he visits his daughter. Peter says this is an assassination attempt. Maddie argues with her father.

 

The Night Agent Review

The fourth episode of The Night Agent was a pretty dull affair. It seems the series has taken a step back since the introduction of the characters at Maddie’s university. The would-be assassins aren’t particularly frightening and the story is quickly becoming very predictable. The show was more enjoyable when the story was simple and wasn’t trying to be too complicated like it is now.

It really needs to get back to being mindless fun because The Night Agent was at its best when Peter and Rose were running around dodging bullets. The episode scores a 5 out of 10.
