The Nautilus Series 1 Episode 5 Recap

As the fifth episode of Nautilus begins, Humility Lucas (Georgia Flood) is caught pretending to be a soldier. She’s surprised to see her mother, Jaqueline Lucas (Caroline Goodall). Jaqueline wants her to go to India because she’s finally found someone for Humility to marry. In private, Jaqueline tells Humility that she’s protecting her. She claims her daughter is obsessed. Humility reminds her that her father thought she could do anything. In the present, Gustave Benoit (Thierry Fremont) tells Humility that she can’t solve this with an equation. She believes otherwise. The others are worried about the snakehead fish looking at them. Captain Nemo (Shazad Latif) asks for a suit so he can go out there. Boniface (Pacharo Mzembe) wants to go as well.

With the hatch blocked, no one can make it out. Humility decides they should use the engines to send the charge back to the eel. If the charge is strong enough, it should repel the eel. Benoit worries they could all be electrocuted. Nemo agrees to do it with no more than 1,000 volts, but Humility says that won’t be enough. Loti (Celine Menville) talks to Humility about how it’s getting hot in there. Loti tells her to only touch with her eyes because she belongs to another. Ranbir (Ashan Kumar) sees Archie under the stairs. The dog shakes and throws a drop of liquid. The voltage begins to increase as they prepare to execute Humility’s plan. She lies about the current voltage to ensure they reach 1,500 as she initially recommended. Humility is knocked to the ground and the eel doesn’t budge. Punch (Darren Gilshenan) and Youngblood (Jacob Collins-Levy) try to track down the submarine.

Youngblood asks about Director Crawley. Meanwhile, Crawley (Damien Garvey) is speaking to Jagadish (Chum Ehelepola). He tries to get information about the Nautilus and its destination. Crawley tells the others that Nemo is going to Bali where he wants to sell the submarine to the Dutch. Youngblood thinks he’s wrong because Haris (Socratis Otto) has picked up several electrical surges. Crawley is shocked when he looks at the coordinates. He wants to go there immediately regardless of the risk. He wants the lying Indian shot. Nemo is told they’ve lost the controls. Suyin (Ling Cooper Tang) takes the wheel. Benoit checks on Ranbir who is bleeding. Loti takes him to sew up the wound. Humility is still convinced her calculations were correct. Nemo barges in to complain about them using too much voltage. He briefly argues with Benoit.

Nemo asks Jiacomo (Andrew Shaw) to bring him back after he leaves the room. Humility thinks she can fix this. Benoit finds Cuff (Benedict Hardie) with the plans. He’s been electrocuted. Humility asks Nemo about getting vengeance against the company while they rush to repair the system. Nemo believes he sees someone walking nearby. The engine turns on but crashes again. Nemo tells Humility to fix this before leaving the room. Loti tells Humility that she messed this up twice and she isn’t as clever as she thinks. The eel begins moving. Humility stills herself that she was right. Then, she admits to Loti that she almost killed Ranbir. Loti is going to get Benoit so he can help Humility fix it. Blaster (Kayden Price) gets up and notices the cotton has spilled onto the floor.

Nemo notices that the eel is letting go. He suspects she can’t stand the heat. They’re approaching a ring of fire and they can’t change course. Nemo is forced to think of something. He yells at Humility to tell her they need power now. Blaster lets Nemo know that he found a box filled with cotton wool soaked in nitroglycerin. It’s getting hot in there so it’ll blow if they don’t cool it. Loti finds Benoit distraught. Nemo believes he sees Mya walking nearby. Boniface is unable to get in touch with anyone in the engine room. Kai (Tyrone Ngatai) arrives to help Blaster deal with the cotton. Suyin and Boniface try to keep Turan (Arlo Green) calm. Blaster and Kai move the cotton. At one point, Kai tries to pick up some of the cotton believing it’s packing. This causes an explosion but no one is injured.

Blaster asks about something on his wrist. Kai claims it’s only dirty. Blaster sits down and stops helping. Kai notices something is wrong with his veins. He puts the explosives in the cooler before checking his wrist. Nemo imagines he’s back in India with his daughter and wife. Billy speaks to Jagadish about lying to Crawley. He gives him something nice to eat. Billy says he knows what it’s like to be hungry. Jagadish says half his village starved to death because of the company. Billy points out that neither of them are there by choice. In private, he asks about Nemo. He believes he knows Nemo since they were friends. Nemo was a prince and Billy was a scholarship student at a horrible boarding school where Nemo was sent. The shoot was called Ravenforth. Billy talks about the first time he saw Nemo who was crying.

They share stories about Nemo. Billy says it was him and Dakkar against the world, but someone else always pays for Nemo’s recklessness. This time it will be Jagadish. Nemo tells his family to leave now or they’ll die. Soldiers are approaching. His wife tells him he’s not there. Humility finally decides to do something. She tries to get in touch with Nemo and Benoit. They don’t respond. Humility checks on Ranbir and notices his veins. She finds that the eel is gone although everyone else is gone. Kai catches up with her before they find Nemo in a chair. Kai tells Humility that the controls are jammed. He suggests going outside to adjust them, but he begins experiencing issues too. Humility tries to keep him awake. She uses ammonia salts. Kai tells her she’ll have to take care of this because he’s almost gone. Before long, Kai is out and Humility believes she sees her father.

She suits up while using the ammonia salts to keep herself awake. Humility makes it outside the submarine. At one point, she imagines she’s at a funeral. She gets closer and sees her father in the coffin. Humility continues until her line gets stuck. She releases it and continues without it. Humility yanks something from the ship so the course can be changed. However, the ship hits something causing her to slide down. She ends up falling and the ship leaves without her.

Nautilus Review

The fifth episode of the Nautilus felt very-long winded considering how little was actually achieved. The shaky performances continue and that is amplified when the actors are working in front of a green screen. The CGI is pitiful. The last five minutes were a great example of that.

The CGI scenes are on the same level as the PlayStation 2 game Echo Night: Beyond which was released in 2004. If anything, Echo Night: Beyond looks sharper than Nautilus. Humility’s face inside the helmet was particularly laughable. Georgia Flood has always been a fairly reliable actress, but she isn’t among the three or four who actually shine.

Captain Nemo lacks any charisma so Humility is left to save him at every turn. This episode was all about her saving the day when it finally got to that point. Before that, it dragged out tediously with one disaster after another and Jagadish mumbling during an interrogation elsewhere.

The ideas here are strong while the execution is dismal. This episode in particular seemed to go nowhere until it reached its predictable conclusion with Humility saving the day. The episode scores a 4 out of 10. Recaps of Nautilus can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link.
