A Girls Best Friend – The episode opens with Detective Miranda Blake (Elen Rhys) monitoring the area for Fabian Caceres (Mio Lechenmayr) in civilian clothes. Sitting on a bench, Detective Max Winter (Julian Looman) keeps an eye out for Caceres while pretending to read a newspaper. Pretending to be a photographer, Jose Guzman (Gabriele Greggio) captures Schneider (Joan Paul Bonnin) in his camera. Ines Villegas (Maria Fernandez Ache) stresses the need to have a recording of Schneider receiving the diamonds from Caceres. A woman asks Schneider for directions. Miranda alerts the other detectives that Caceres is approaching. The woman leaves as Caceres passes and drops a paper bag in a nearby waste bin. Schneider passes the waste bin up on his way out of the park. Max retrieves the bag and pulls out what appears to be pastry.

Miranda is frustrated after their missed opportunity to catch Caceres in action after three months of tracking him. Roberto (Alex Hafner) says Caceres’ fingerprints were on the paper bag. Ines informs them that Barcelona is taking over Caceres’ case before sending them to the Pollenca Hotel to investigate an ongoing theft. Miranda is not keen on the idea of investigating a petty thief. Ines says Milamo Resorts is planning an expansion. En route to Sagrera, Miranda complains about their new case which she feels is a punishment for their unsuccessful diamond smuggling case. Upon arrival, they meet the management director, Gustavo Molina (Daniel Ortiz) to discuss the case. Gustavo tells them that there are no CCTV cameras in the guest areas. Dropping employee uniforms on the desk, he says Ines approved them to work undercover. Later dressed in full uniform, they encounter the Guest Services leader, Jack Dunn (Jack Forsyth-Noble). Ignoring Max’s hand, Jack gives Miranda an earpiece. Head Housekeeper Isabella Garcia (Amanda Vilanova) refuses to shake Max’s hand and orders him to take off his sunglasses.

Jack gives Miranda a tour of the hotel. He tells her that Guest Services have a personal connection with their guests. Mrs. Edwards greets him. He points out that a Berlin fashion photographer, Anders Schafer is wearing a high-end luxury watch. Giles Davis (Joe da Costa) requests a new pillow. Giles and his wife, Celine Davis are newlyweds. Jack urges Miranda to collect her tips, otherwise, she will be forced to wait until after the guests have departed. Isabella gives Max a tour of the laundry room. He acts silly to make her son, Paco Garcia (Dylan Torrell) laugh. Jack introduces Miranda to Melissa Hart (Elena Gyasi) who is rehearsing for her first performance at the hotel. Melissa shows Miranda her expensive watch, an anniversary gift from Jack. Isabella demonstrates how to make a bed. Max discovers an Emanuele Donnazini shirt in the trashcan. She claims the guests throw expensive items away all the time and suggests keeping the shirt. He voices concern about being accused of theft. She assures him that it will be nothing new. Melissa tells Miranda that she attended Chelsea Studios but left to work there to start a new life. Miranda asks her about the petty thefts. Melissa denies any knowledge of it.

Paco tells Max about Isabella’s plan to return to Columbia when his father is released from prison. While searching the dumpster for his ball, Paco discovers a handbag. A short time later, Max tells Miranda about Isabella wanting to go back to Columbia. She questions if Isabella is stealing to raise money for airline tickets before telling him about Melissa’s expensive watch. En route to take a chair to Giles’ room, Miranda sees Stephanie embrace Jack and give him cash. Isabella claims her husband shot a man during a break-in. Miranda walks in on Jack and Melissa having an argument about them never seeing each other. Max sees Isabella with the handbag that Max found in the dumpster. Melissa shows Miranda an encryption on the back of her expensive anniversary watch. Jack does one-on-ones with the guests. Melissa tells Miranda that she got expelled for stealing cash from another student. A short time later, Miranda is snooping around Stephanie’s room when she opens the door. Jack is late to meet her for a one-on-one. Over a game of backgammon, Stephanie Edwards (Miriam Lucia) says Jack’s father was a jeweler in London before he died. His awful stepmother inherited everything and Jack and his sister, Alexis were orphaned.

Miranda finds Max and tells him that Melissa confirms what came back on the background check. She had a caution for theft in the United Kingdom. Miranda doubts it has anything to do with her. As for Isabella, Max doubts she’s a thief. Miranda admits Jack’s checks were clean although there is something about him that seems off. Miranda is forced to attend a team meeting with Jack Dunn and the others. Jack tells everyone that tonight has to be perfect for Mel. Miranda speaks to Melissa to see if they’re good now.

Melissa feels bad moaning about him when he’s had it so tough. Miranda learns he has a sister named Alexis. Jack is very supportive of Alexis and Melissa. He’s even convinced Gustavo to let Melissa sing every week. Gustavo speaks to someone on the phone and tells them he paid so they can stop harassing him. Max overhears him. He catches up with Miranda to say Gustavo has money trouble. Miranda wants to search Jack’s locker. When they do, they find three purses. Miranda says no one has reported stolen handbags and they look like knockoffs. Max says Isabella’s kid gave her one like this that he found in a dumpster out back. Miranda believes Jack is selling counterfeits. Max wants to speak to Gustavo. They check his office and find paperwork about Gustavo keeping the kids until the end of the season.

Max finds a pack of matches from the Casino De Palma. Gustavo interrupts and complains one of the guests has reported another theft. He says he was in town visiting an acquaintance at the time. Max asks about his gambling and whether he owes the casino money. He believes he’s using the tips to pay them back. Max urges him to reverse the policy and pay back the tips. Next, they visit Davis to ask him about the theft. He reveals that someone stole his VR headset. Before long, they find out that Paco has been moving around through the air conditioning ducts. He’s also stolen all the stuff. Paco says he just wanted to help pay for the plane tickets. Max tells Gustavo to go easy on Isabella. Max is ready to leave, but Miranda promised Melissa she’d be there to watch her sing. Once they arrive, Max notices a woman talking to Jack and he recognizes her from the square during the Caceres operation.

They check the dumpster. Miranda admits she was wrong about Jack. She explains it’s not about the counterfeits. Instead, it’s about the diamonds. They return in time to see Jack leave with the woman, Alexis (Sara Parker), in question. They rush to catch up with her. They watch her get some bags before trying to stop her. The woman flees with the bags and tries to get away on a boat. Max and Miranda use a jet ski to go after her. They catch up with her only to run out of fuel. Once they make it back to land, they decide to speak to Jack who flees. They manage to stop him. Jack is asked about working for Fabian Caceres. He claims not to know who that is. Max asks about his sister Alexis. Jack says he met Caceres through her and she works for him. Jack has been complaining about the wages to Fabian. He’s been trying to save for his future and Melissa’s future.

He agrees to work with Fabian. By the time he realized they were smuggled diamonds, it was too late. Jack says Alexis is desperate to get out. Miranda thinks they can help with that. Schneider meets Alexis while Max and others watch. When Alexis and Schneider make the exchange, Fabian walks by and puts something in the garbage. Miranda follows Fabian who meets Alexis and gets the money. He finds himself cornered and arrested. Max tells Ines he’s taken care of the bedroom thief. The manager decided not to press charges. Isabella finds plane tickets waiting for her. At the station, Miranda tells Max she’s glad she hasn’t lost her touch. Max admits he thought she was heartbroken. He saw her with his cousin and thought he let her down.

Miranda says it wasn’t anything serious. Mancuso (David Mora) greets them. Max leaves them. Mancuso tells Miranda he has a few things to follow up on. They agree to have dinner later. Later, Max asks whether it’s anything serious.

 

The Mallorca Files Review

The sixth episode of The Mallorca Files was okay although nothing groundbreaking. The writing at least tried to be clever with some heartfelt moments scattered throughout. On the other hand, the episode ended a little abruptly considering we never learned what happened to some of the key players.

The episode was easy to watch although the cast was a little bloated. That actually made sense though since the story dealt with the staff at a luxury hotel. Miranda and Max helped track down a motel thief who turned out to be a young boy wanting to help his mother.

In the process, they brought down a diamond smuggler named Fabian Caceres. There’s a possibility that Miranda and Mancuso will get together. It’s easy to have mixed feelings about that. The episode was decent compared to some of the others. It scores a 5.5 out of 10.
