aethelwold the last kingdom

At the start of the episode, Skade (Thea Sofie Loch Naess) takes Uhtred’s (Alexander Dreymon) knife while he sleeps. She tells him to trust her. She slices her hand open and says she has seen the rebirth of Uhtred Ragnarson. She claims she has saw Alfred (David Dawson) fall and Uhtred rise. He feasts on her blood. Finan (Mark Rowley) watches as they make out. Aethelred (Toby Regbo) and Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) arrive for the wedding. Aethelwold (Harry McEntire) speaks with Beocca (Ian Hart). Aethelwold asks him how their king is. Aethelwold claims that Alfred and Edward are in his prayers daily. Beocca claims he is ready for a time when Alfred is gone. Aethelwold tells him not to forget his wife Thyra (Julia Bache-Wiig). Sigebriht (Ed Birch) enters and Beocca leaves.

They speak about the future of Wessex and Edward (Timothy Innes) becoming king. Sigebriht admits that the witan should choose the king. Aethelwold wants to prevent Edward’s reputation from growing. They agree that Edward cannot succeed. They intend to spread the rumor that Uhtred want revenge and will act out against Edward. Aethelwold says that they must be ruthless. We jump to Uhtred’s estate. Finan speaks with Uhtred about Sake. Edwin (Frank Bourke) tells Uhtred that someone has taken much of his food and animals for the army. Sihtric (Arnas Fedaravicius) and the others enter the hall. Uhtred is not happy with what Bishop Erkenwald (Kevin Eldon) has done to his hall and food.

Finan tries to make Uhtred remain rational. Osferth offers to take down the cross. Hild (Eva Birthistle) enters and tells Uhtred that it is her cross and her doing. Skade brings it down on her own. Uhtred agrees to let them take half of the grain. He speaks with Hild in private. Uhtred learns that his children have been put under the care of the crown in Winchester. Uhtred is worried that they’ve been baptized. He is angry. Uhtred wants to see his children. Hild agrees to help him. Uhtred tells Finan that he will be riding to Winchester with the priests. Sigebriht confronts Beocca in the street. He asks him about Uhtred swearing revenge against Alfred. He claims that Uhtred will kill Edward if Alfred dies. Beocca tells him otherwise. He also tells him to keep his mouth shut.

Beocca returns home to Thyra. Beocca admits he almost wishes Alfred would close his eyes and die. Thyra suggests he should end it himself. Beocca is worried that he will not be able to protect his wife if the Danes come and people see her as a Dane. Osferth (Ewan Mitchell) asks Finan why Skade is not dead. He is told that she has beauty and power. Uhtred and Skade have fun down in the water. Osferth watches as Uhtred drowns her in the water. Later that night, Osferth offers Uhtred something warm to eat. Osferth admits he saw the act. He tells Uhtred that it was necessary. Osferth says that he cannot leave. Alfred speaks with Beocca about the marriage arrangements. Beocca confirms that almost everything is complete. Alfred wants Aethelwold watched. Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) says that he should be dead. Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) lets Pyrlig (Cavan Clerkin) know that he is aware of Edward and his other woman.

Edward greets Aelflaed (Amelia Clarkson) and her father. Her father doesn’t let them spend time together. Aethelhelm wants to know about the bastard child. Pyrlig makes him drop it. Aethelhelm speaks with Alfred and Aelswith. Alfred talks about Uhtred. He says that Edward should be allowed to take Uhtred into his service. Aelswith asks Alfred why he doesn’t pardon Uhtred. Alfred is adamant that Edward will need Uhtred. Alfred doesn’t believe Uhtred would accept the pardon. Plus, he wants that to be Edward’s decision. Alfred tells her that she needs to guide him towards the correct decision. Finan and Sihtric run into a small camp. They beg for money. Finan gives them nothing. Aelswith attempts to find answers from god. She wants a sign that it is okay to rely on a heathen. Alfred interrupts her. His pain is obviously worsening.

The Bishop and Hild speak with Steapa (Adrian Bouchet) at the gate. They’re eventually allowed inside. The beggar musician is allowed in too. Uhtred and Osferth ride inside in the back of the wagon. Uhtred spots Aethelwold. Aethelwold and his new comrade agree that they need to inform the king about Uhtred being nearby. Finan learns about the wedding. Sihtric goes to find his wife. Osferth joins Finan. He needs to get in touch with Beocca. Osferth lets Finan know that Uhtred is free of his curse. Uhtred surprises Thyra. Uhtred tells her about his plan to save Ragnar. Uhtred and Thyra perform a ritual. Beocca speaks with Finan about Uhtred. Aethelwold keeps an eye on them. Finan tells him where he can find Uhtred. Beocca returns home. He wants to know why Uhtred is there. Thyra explains she is given her blood to save Ragnar.

Beocca doesn’t like the non-Christian nonsense. Aethelwold and his men go on the hunt for Uhtred. Beocca wants Uhtred to speak with Alfred. He believes he can arrange it safely. Thyra emerges and lets the men look inside. They search the home and find nothing. Uhtred is shown hiding out of sight. Then, the wedding begins. Beocca wishes to speak to Alfred in private. Beocca tells Alfred that Edward is not the answer to their problems. He needs Uhtred. Alfred knows this. Beocca tells him that Uhtred is here. He encourages Alfred to speak with him. The wedding begins while Uhtred prepares to meet with Alfred. Uhtred sees the history papers Alfred has prepared. Alfred watches him from a distance.

The Last Kingdom Recap

The Last Kingdom has been very good this season. This episode solved Uhtred’s witch problem. Uhtred dealt with her swiftly and violently. Now, he should be free of his curse. It was great to see him deal with Skade in that manner. Now, Uhtred is set to speak with Alfred. That should be interesting. Will they be able to come to an agreement? Will Uhtred agree to work with Edward? In all likelihood, the answers are yes. Still, I am interested in seeing how that plays out.

This episode was very good. It deserves an 8 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of The Last Kingdom before you go!
