The episode opens with Barrister Ingrid Lewis (Emma Appleton) asking John Webster (Colin Morgan) if he started the fire to avenge her rejection. While embracing, he denies trying to kill her before walking away. In a flashback, Ingrid rushes into Mark Orpen’s (Elliot Barnes-Worrell) room to find him lying on the bed.

One Year Earlier – Ingrid spars with Belinda Grey (Sara Powell). After the sparring session, they discuss Stockham’s drinking habits. Belinda asks about her dating life. Ingrid says it is too much effort. Belinda urges her to separate herself from work. On her walk to work, Ingrid spots Webster across the street. When he disappears, she questions if it were really him.

Ingrid prepares her client, Gavin (Phil Aizlewood) for court. Gavin asks why it is necessary. She stresses the importance of making a first good impression. On the bus ride home, she receives a call from Webster who warns that she is in danger. He urges her to meet him. She ends the call before emerging from the bus. At the Fox’s Hare, she informs Suzanne (Olivia D’Lima) of Webster’s call. Suzanne asks if she is positive it was Webster. Confirming it was him, Ingrid questions how he got her phone number. Suzanne warns that Webster is “twisted.”

At a pub, Belinda tells Ingrid that she did not want to go into law like her father. Ingrid admits to being desperate to be an attorney. Belinda claims to have always known she could handle it. Ingrid says Webster called to warn her of possible danger. She says it feels like someone is following her again. As Belinda prepares to depart, Ingrid convinces her to take her umbrella. On the walk home, Belinda calls Ingrid to ask her to represent chambers at the “Pathway Into Law.” After the call ends, Ingrid’s abandoned umbrella lies on the ground.

Tom Martins (Rob Jarvis) informs the barristers that Belinda is dead after being hit by a cab. Ingrid recalls her last minutes with Belinda before she heads out into the rain with her umbrella. She checks her email to find a message – I’m sorry. I’m here when you want to talk” – from Webster. Martins tells her that Belinda had a client conference scheduled for this evening. After agreeing to step in for Belinda, she asks if Angus Grey (Nicolas Rowe) mentioned Belinda having an umbrella. He says no before leaving.

En route to the police department, Ingrid repeatedly checks her surroundings. She asks DI Jill Winstanley (Sophie Stanton) what if Belinda’s death was intentional. Jill asks what would make her think it was not an accident. Ingrid says Belinda was carrying her umbrella before questioning if someone pushed her in front of the taxi thinking it was her. Jill asks if she believes someone wants to harm her. Ingrid suggests her former client, John Webster holds a grudge against her. He claims Webster was obsessed with her after she won his case. Jill asks if she filed harassment charges against Webster. Ingrid says no before informing her of his recent warning. Jill denies her request to view the CCTV footage.

Two Years Ago – After gifting Ingrid cufflinks, Webster asks what she thought of his case. She boasts of providing him with the best legal representation. He denies intentionally hurting Emma. After a toast to his not-guilty verdict, she informs him of her next case in Basildon when Belinda approaches. He thanks Ingrid before they depart. Later, Mark is not receptive to Ingrid’s unexpected visit. She admits to just wanting to spend time with her fiancé.

Back to the present, Angus tells Ingrid that the police believe Belinda lost her footing when she stepped out into the traffic. Ingrid assures him that she and Belinda only had a few drinks. He is pulled away to attend to his daughter. Later, Ingrid takes photos of CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the accident. She enters a local business posing as a criminal lawyer investigating the accident. The receptionist says his boss must authorize her to access the surveillance system. Outside, she receives a call from Jill asking about Mark and Belinda’s relationship. Ingrid claims they were on friendly terms until they split and he moved to Canada. Jill informs her of Belinda receiving a call from Mark at 1pm, several hours before she died. Ingrid says Belinda never mentioned his call.

Two Years Ago – Webster escorts Ingrid to a secret bar. She expresses how good it feels to win a court case. He admits to only think about making his own money. She says her background was not privileged. He explains how he saved money while working at Dexter’s nightclub to put a down payment on a property.

Back to the present, while waiting on the train, Ingrid researches the property at 36 Drakefield Street. In a flashback, Ingrid watches two firemen carrying a body bag. Back to the present, Ingrid asks Anne Orpen (Jacquetta May) why Mark returned to England. Anne claims he wanted to come home. They discuss the house where the fire took place.

18 Months Ago – Ingrid and Webster are out for a stroll. She suggests it is time for her to go home. He assures her that they have done nothing wrong. He describes how he would seduce her.

Back to the present, Ingrid confronts Mark about calling Belinda. Mark claims to have called Belinda to get her phone number. She asks why he came back. He says Canada is not his home. Later at home, she receives a manila envelope with a note that reads, “Take a close look” and what looks like a USB flash drive. After a quick look outside, she returns to her flat. The USB flash drive contains CCTV from four cameras. The first camera shows Belinda step out into traffic before a taxi mows her down.

Ingrid shows the CCTV footage to Suzanne. She suggests someone pushed Belinda into traffic. Suzanne says it appears as if Belinda lost her balance. Pointing out a man at the scene, Ingrid questions why he waited for everyone to be focused on the road before leaving. Suzanne reminds her of how she came to London to help her after the fire. She urges her to report Webster to the police. Ingrid assures her that the police will not investigate it properly.

At home, Ingrid sticks a knife in her pocket before meeting Webster at the Southbank Centre. She accuses him of threatening her when he called. He assures her that it was a warning. She says the timing is suspicious. He claims to have visited her flat multiple times when he saw someone looking through her mail and taking photos of her flat. He suggests contacting the police. She demands to know how he got her address. He tells her that he was in Liverpool on the day Belinda died. He confesses to loving her. He warns that she is in danger as the episode ends.

The Killing Kind Synopsis

Ingrid Lewis is dating Mark Orpen when their house catches on fire. She finds a woman in Mark’s bed. The woman is pronounced dead at the scene. Mark moves to Canada.

Ingrid represents John Webster in a stalking case. Webster is accused of stalking Emma. After she wins his case, he becomes obsessed with her. She believes he started the fire to kill her because she rejected him.

A year later, Ingrid receives a call from Webster warning her that may be in danger. She and Belinda are in a pub when she tells her about Webster’s call. Belinda urges her to go to the police. Ingrid gives Belinda her red umbrella before she leaves for home. A short time later, she is hit by a taxi at an intersection. Believing the hit was meant for her, Ingrid reaches out to DI Jill Winstanley. She tries to convince Jill to investigate Webster’s whereabouts when Belinda died.

Jill informs Ingrid of Mark calling Belinda several hours before she died. Ingrid visits Anne who confirms Mark is back from Canada. Mark called Belinda to get Ingrid’s phone number, so he could inform her of his being back in England.

Someone drops off a USB flash drive with CCTV footage of the accident scene at Ingrid’s flat. She finds a man’s behavior suspicious but Suzanne believes it is nothing.

The Killing Kind Review

While the plot is not original, the suspense is enough to keep viewers tuned in. Bits and pieces of the past are revealed gradually. Colin Morgan and Emma Appleton are outstanding. Their performances are spot-on.

The cinematography is hit-and-miss. For the most part, the flashbacks are helpful. I’m confused as to why the show didn’t start two years prior, instead of the constant time-lapses.

The pace is bit slow at times but the story moves along quite nicely.
