The episode opens in a flashback with Sylvia (Amelia Bullmore) cleaning a wound on the palm of Malachy Granger’s (Tom Glynn-Carney) hand. She warns him that young Ember Manning (Connie Jenkins-Greig) will be upset if he misses her 17^th birthday party. He claims to be scheduled to work the night shift but believes he will be around for her other birthdays. He says she is “the real thing.” She questions his sincerity. A short time later, he is at the Watersports facility when Amy (Bo Bragason) and Caitlin (Laura Marcus) stop by. He accuses her of cutting his hand to the bone. She accuses him of lying before kissing his hand. Joe Foster (Ryan Dean) and Caitlin look at each other.

In the present, Morgan (Ralph Ineson) questions DC Ember Manning (Jenna Coleman) about Amy’s disappearance. She previously put evidence connected to Amy in the evidence locker. She denies any knowledge of what happened to Amy. Morgan says Malachy murdered Amy but Ember isn’t so sure. A short time later, Ember arrives home after being released on bail and placed on suspension. Hannah (Ruby Stokes) kisses her on the cheek for believing Malachy is innocent. When Ember broaches her arrest, Hannah insists on dedicating the day to Malachy’s memory. Ember says they will have to wait to spread the ashes at The Jetty.

Casey (David Ajala) terminates his therapist-patient relationship with Ember. He claims to have feelings for her but refuses to date her. She gets upset and leaves. In a flashback, Amy informs Caitlin of her and Malachy’s plan to have sex while her parents, Russell (Elliot Cowan) and Imogen (Anna Wilson-Jones) are out of town. She suggests Caitlin have sex with Joe. Caitlin reminds her that Malachy doesn’t love her. Amy expresses her desire for them to simultaneously lose their virginity, so they would forever be linked together. Joan (Clare Calbraith) sees them kissing but doesn’t tell Martin (Rick Warden). Back to the present, Hannah is upset she will not be spreading Malachy’s ashes. When Ember breaks down and is unable to continue her speech, Hannah blurts out that the police believe Malachy killed Amy. Arj (Matthew McNulty) says no way. Chloe (Nina Barker-Francis) and Jules (Miya Ocego) are present to support Hannah. Ember says Amy’s bone was discovered in the basement of the boat hut. Distraught, Hannah goes outside and throws Malachy’s ashes on the ground. Ember saves as much of the ashes as possible. Hannah apologizes and assures her that he is innocent.

Ember tells Morgan that the evidence against Malachy is circumstantial. He refuses to talk about the case because she is on suspension. A short time later, Ember learns Joan was sedated after her last visit. Martin intervenes to stop Ember from upsetting Joan. Ember asks who is Kitty. He claims it was Amy’s nickname for Caitlin. In a flashback, Joan demands Caitlin make Kitty go away. Back in the present, adult Caitlin/Kit Owen (Lorna Nickson Brown) is lecturing about Gentileschi. After class, Ember asks her about the photo of Amy and Malachy. Ember claims Joe took the photo.

In a flashback, Joe threatens Amy when Malachy arrives. In the present, Ember informs Hitch (Archie Renaux) of Malachy’s brother, Joe. She says he was with Malachy and Amy on the night that she disappeared and may have killed her. A short time later, Hitch and Ember visit adult Joe Foster (Jonny Fines) in jail. Joe doesn’t know Malachy died and denies taking the photo of Malachy and Amy together. In a flashback, he takes the picture for evidence. Back to the present, Ember informs Joe of Amy’s death. He suggests Malachy killed Amy before saying he was seeing another girl. In a flashback, Malachy leaves young Ember’s house and arrives at the lake a short time later. Amy takes a roofie and kisses Caitlin. Caitlin and Joe are having sex but she makes him stop. Joe tells her that Malachy and Amy had sex before. Amy pursues Caitlin to find out what happened. Caitlin confronts her about Joe’s claim. Amy confesses and calls Joe evil. Caitlin accuses Amy of using her and threatens to go to the police if she doesn’t stop seeing Malachy. Amy assures her that there is no need for her to be jealous before kissing her. Caitlin pulls away and professes to love her. Amy vows to leave if she leaves her.

Ember gives Morgan Joe’s statement and says he didn’t kill Amy. In a flashback, Malachy regrets setting Caitlin up to appease Joe. She says Joe forced them to do it and she assumed Caitlin would like it. He believes Caitlin is in love with her. Amy tries to stop him from leaving her. She grabs him and yells that she won’t let him love anyone else. Joe leaves in Mack’s vehicle. Ember remembers Mack singing for her. He tells her that he got her a necklace. He tells her she’ll have more songs and necklaces than Beyonce at this rate. She wants him to come tonight and she wants to come tonight. Mack says he can’t let the lads down tonight even though it’s the factory shift. Ember found that he had pills with him. She sends up taking one. Mack tells her to go easy on them. In the present, Ember reminds Sylvia that she said she was hung over after her 17^th birthday.

Sylvia says Mack gave her roofies. She believes he had them to get high. Ember wants to know more about her vomit and the stain on the carpet. She explains the drug has a blue dye in it to stop it from being used as a date rape drug. Sylvia argues that she just got high and got sick, but Ember believes there could be more to it. Sylvia reveals Mack came over after work but he left before she did. When she got back, they were at home together. Sylvia goes on to say Mack didn’t need a drug to get what he wanted. Ember questions why he didn’t stay on the same night Amy went missing. Sylvia didn’t know it was that night. Ember complains that her mom was always drunk or high while she wandered around lost. She argues that some people shouldn’t have kids.

Sylvia doesn’t know what she wants from her. Ember yells that she wanted her to have kept her safe. She remembers that her mom said “they” had to do something that night. Ember confronts Arj because she knows he was with Mack the night he killed Amy. Arj admits he hoped he and Ember could get together when Mack was done with her. He didn’t expect Mack to become a gold-star family man. Arj wonders if he’s just had bad breaks or if there’s something broken about him. Ember hears a noise in the background and remembers it from the recording of Riz. Arj tries to stop her from walking away. He says Riz came looking for him, recording him, and laughing. They got into a fight. Riz had a photo of a bone that was in the basement of the hut. Arj admits it was there because of him.

He broke in and dug up the body when he heard Rob was working on the floor. Then, he set the fire. Ember argues that he could’ve let the body be found and Mack be exposed as the kill. Arj says Mack didn’t killer Amy. He did. Arj says it was her birthday, they were all at the pub, and he liked her. He felt bad for her because Mack wasn’t there and he knew where he was. Ember was hanging out pills. At some point, Arj realized that Mack had been leaving him messages. Arj went to pick him up and he ended up hitting someone. Amy may remember being there. Arj says he doesn’t even remember it because of the roofies. He remembers Mack calling saying he hit Amy in the car. It was just a glancing blow, but Amy wasn’t getting in touch with Mack.

Ember asks where he found her. Arj says she had fallen down the embankment and busted her head open on a rock. Mack thought the basement was kinder than the lake. Arj claims Mack did that for him. Ember realizes that she was driving the entire time. She remembers leaving in the car to pick up Mac. Ember says Mack lied to protect her. She insists she didn’t know. Arj complains that it ruined him. Ember wants to go to the police station to tell them the truth. Arj pulls Ember to the ground and begins choking her. When she wakes up, she finds Arj pouring gas on himself and getting ready to set himself on fire. She wants to go home to her daughter. Arj claims he did it for her and people do messed-up things for love. He says love does hurt before setting the fire. Ember jumps into the water to avoid death.

Ember goes to the police. She tells Hannah that she’s the spider. Then, Ember meets Caitlin who says she spent years trying to forgive herself for leaving Amy that night. Caitlin wondered if Amy was safe from any man. She says it’s right and they have to say it or nothing will ever change. Ember confesses that Amy wasn’t safe from her. They walk together. Ember says she has a blind spot because she can see other people’s weaknesses but not her own. She’s going to hand herself in and tell the truth. Caitlin asks if she thinks the truth and justice are always the same thing. Later, she sits around and thinks about the night of Amy’s death. She puts a pill in her hand. Ember speaks to DI Morgan and DS Henderson in an interview room. She says she was there when David Argent killed Amy.

Riz talks about chasing the darkness although the darkness doesn’t really exist. Caitlin visits Joan and Martin. Ember goes to the hospital to see Miranda and her baby. She asks Miranda to write down a list of the men she slept with. She wants to put them and Liam in a cell. Ember tells Hannah that her dad did some things he doesn’t deserve to be forgiven for. Hannah scatters his ashes. Sylvia knows she wasn’t the best mother. She believes she tries to make amends through Hannah when she should’ve been doing it with Ember. Sylvia hopes it isn’t too late.

 

The Jetty Review

If The Jetty wasn’t so miserably bad, it would’ve been forgettable and it would’ve been better for it. The series obviously had a message, but it got lost in the mess and the fact that it tried to relay far too many messages to viewers. While the cast was fairly strong, some of the performances were not. Some of the minor cast members shined brighter than the main cast, but no one really came out better.

Four episodes were too many because it only allowed the story to become more convoluted until it turned into a chaotic mess. The script was undeniably weak with lots of tropes being rehashed from other projects. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if it was confirmed this was haphazardly created using AI. The finale wasn’t particularly satisfying with a lot of stuff that just seemed really stupid.

For instance, the show never explained Blake’s involvement in the whole thing. It’s like he was just a cheap writing tactic. One minute, he’s somehow got into Ember’s house. The next minute, he completely disappeared. Wouldn’t he be a bit interested in Riz’s death?

The Riz character was equally far-fetched. She was billed as an award-winning journalist and podcaster, yet she had no problem strolling around the city and people seemed oblivious to her. If you’re going to use podcasters, at least throw in one character who listens and actually knows who they are.

The police force is poorly written to the point that it was pretty much just Ember and her lapdog Hitch running around talking to people. Wasn’t there supposed to be multiple teams investigating? There really wasn’t any investigating in the end. Instead, it was just Ember slowly piecing together moments from her drugged childhood until she finally realized she was the killer.

Nevertheless, Arj was there to set up the evidence, throw a pity party, and cover Ember’s tracks for her. This in and of itself was highly unbelievable, but it also threw away the anti-male message by making Ember the killer. And, this is another recent show that sympathizes with the killer and lets them get away with it.

While there was very shaky acting here, the writing wasn’t up to par. No one could’ve made this script work. Heck, many viewers probably won’t realize the scenes with Kitty and Amy are flashbacks until they’re midway through the series. And no, it’s not the next Happy Valley. Why compare two shows that have nothing in common?
