As the second episode of The Inheritance begins, it appears someone in a caravan is watching home videos again. Jenny Roche (Pauline McLynn) tells Daniel, Chloe, and Sian that bioethanol mixed with alcohol could cause signs similar to dementia. Daniel (Robert James-Collier) asks if their dad might not have had dementia. They quickly begin blaming Susan, but Jenny says he likely did this to himself. Chloe (Jemima Rooper) doubts Jenny would’ve stopped the cremation if she believed that. As they leave, Daniel tells Chloe and Sian (Gaynor Faye) that they need to find the will if it still exists.
He’ll crack open Twister when they find his will and discover how Susan murdered their father. At home, Pete (Adil Ray) asks Chloe how it went. She tells him Susan could’ve killed Dennis. Pete asks whether she is going to tell the others everything, but Chloe seems hesitant to do so. Glen (Kevin Harvey) goes to Daniel’s restaurant and immediately takes a table. While Sian is in town with Charlie, she sees the real estate agent, Nathan (Rory Fleck Byrne). Charlie confirms to Glen that he got the money. Glen is adamant that he should pay for the meal because he is a firm believer in paying his bills. He wants to make sure Daniel told Sian hello from him, but Dan hasn’t gotten around to it.
Glen says he needs to speak to her since they have unfinished business. Later, Daniel, Sian, and Chloe wonder if they already have enough to challenge the will. Daniel says the solicitor didn’t have a copy of the old one. Then, he admits that he forgot to check on the companies called Gaudete and DRD. Detective Sergeant Morris (Risteard Cooper) arrives because they need to talk about the death of Dennis Watson. Daniel talks to him about Dennis potentially being poisoned. Morris says the coroner never said anything about poisoning. He goes on to explain that there is no evidence Dennis was killed unlawfully.
Daniel urges DS Morris to speak to Susan. Morris says everyone is a suspect until they know differently. He gives them a card in case they think of anything that might be relevant. Once he leaves, Daniel admits he hopes they’re suspects because it means the detective thinks a crime has been committed. Chloe realizes she has to pick up the kids since Pete is busy. After she steps out, Daniel learns that Michael is behind Gaudete Dynamics. Sian asks about DRD1, but Daniel doesn’t say before leaving to confront Michael. Chloe visits Susan who was wondering when she’d show up. She tells Susan she has been there before and that’s how she found her.
Chloe followed her all those years ago when she saw her with Dennis. She reminds Susan that she was sleeping with a man whose wife had cancer. Chloe didn’t know she was Michael’s wife. Susan says they were separated. She remembers that day and how Dennis was mortified. Susan assumes she hasn’t told the others. Chloe thought their dad had found someone new and didn’t believe he spent all that time with Susan. However, Susan believes she knew since she followed them. Chloe finds it odd that Dennis changed his will to benefit Susan before killing himself out of the blue. She tells Susan that Sian and Daniel want her cut out of everything, but she believes they can work out something together.
None of this matters if they can prove Susan killed their father. Susan argues Dennis left her everything because that is what he wanted. She insists she did not kill Dennis. Susan doesn’t think it’ll make her siblings happy when they find out she has been hiding this secret. Later, Chloe catches up with Sian who tells her about Michael. Chloe says Michael was wronged so their father might’ve felt guilty. Sian thinks they should visit Susan. Chloe says there is enough doubt to challenge the will so they should focus on that. Daniel goes to Michael’s place to look for him. While looking around, he finds a bottle of bioethanol. Sian tells Chloe that she wanted to call Nathan, but she felt weird about it.
Chloe insists some people aren’t meant to be in relationships. She claims she is looking out for Sian who thinks she is just jealous. Someone in the caravan continues watching home videos. Daniel takes the new information to DS Morris and blames Michael for his dad’s murder. Morris says he and the coroner will decide whether there should be an investigation. Sian calls Nathan while someone seems to be watching her. Daniel takes Morris to Michael’s place only to find that the bottle is gone. Michael (Kevin Whately) argues Daniel should be arrested for breaking into his property. When asked about the company, Michael says he hasn’t used that company name in years.
He insists he doesn’t know why Dennis would put money in there although Dennis was full of surprises. Daniel can’t believe Morris isn’t going to arrest Michael. When Sian gets home with Charlie, she finds a package outside. Charlie wonders why someone would want to buy him a toy car. Nathan calls Sian and invites her out for a drink. Daniel and Chloe continue looking for the will. Once Chloe finds it, she hides it from Michael. They look through more of their dad’s stuff. Susan interrupts to tell them she is not sure what they’re doing is legal. She believes they have secrets to share with one another. Susan knows they’re contesting the will, but she is adamant all of this is hers now.
She has brought a man to change the locks. Chloe goes home where she tells Pete she needs to find out what is going on with Daniel. Pete thinks she should tell them because they’ll understand although Chloe isn’t sure about that. She shows him the will. If the changes were made while he was officially suffering with dementia, it proves his original intentions. Chloe might call the police, but she might see what she can get from Susan first. Sian gets dressed and goes to the pub where she gets a drink. Glen approaches Daniel to see if he can do him a favor. He’ll extend the debt window if Daniel helps him see his son. Daniel isn’t sure he can do that because it is against the law.
Glen says he wants to see Charlie and Sian. He knows Daniel can make it happen. Glen reminds Daniel he is the one who opened all this up again. Daniel calls Sian later and learns her date likely blew her off. Daniel talks about the possibility of hanging out with Charlie. When Nathan arrives, Sian says it is a great idea and ends the conversation. They drink together and Sian talks about Susan taking the house from them. Nathan thinks they should talk about something else. Sian asks how he feels about dating an older woman. He doesn’t know because he has never done it. They kiss before Nathan goes for more drinks. When they leave, they make out.
Glen watches them get into an elevator together moments later. Daniel visits Michael in the middle of the night. Michael comes out and points a gun at him. Daniel explains he came to ask for the money his dad put into Gaudete Dynamics because he owes bad people and is getting desperate. It appears that Michael shoots himself as the episode ends.
The Inheritance Review
The second episode of The Inheritance was okay although the story is getting a little too farfetched. The mixture of everything going on just casts a shadow of doubt over everything. On the other hand, there are some decent performances and some of the characters are actually sympathetic. In particular, it is easy to feel sorry for Daniel even though he put himself in a dangerous situation with Glen.
In the end, I think whoever is watching the Christmas videos will blow the case wide open whether it is Dennis or someone else. Truthfully, The Inheritance is in line with other offerings from Channel 5. It is a good way to fill a few hours even if the story is forgotten a short time later. The episode scores a 5.5 out of 10.
