All Eventualities – The episode begins with Eddie Horniman (Theo James) and Geoff Seacombe (Vinnie Jones) returning to the estate after Keith’s (Mason Fardowe) execution. While sharing a drink, Eddie tells him that he is beginning to suspect that he was right about Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) not letting him step away from the business. Geoff subtly encourages him to continue with business as normal while preparing for all eventualities behind the scenes.
Presumably, sometime later, Eddie requests a meeting with Susie to discuss his departure from the business. Freddy Horniman (Daniel Ings) appears to be awaiting Susie’s arrival as well with the hopes of discussing something he claims to be a breakthrough. She dismisses him with the promise of a later meeting before learning of Eddie’s desire to leave the business. She says he’s fulfilled his part of their agreement, but the money he’s earned them can’t be considered a profit until it’s laundered. Eddie doesn’t bother hiding his displeasure and she agrees to meet with her money guy to see if they can speed up the process.
Susie escorts Eddie to the Glass Knuckle where he is introduced to Chucky (Guz Khan) and his associate, Ishy (Adam Kiani). Before the meeting they enjoy Jack Glass (Harry Goodwins) putting on a masterful performance in the boxing ring. Chucky proves to be a bit of an eccentric as he rambles on about his affinity for Korean Dogs and Stella (Emily Eaton Plowright). Susie excuses herself from the meeting when she sees Jack and Stella enter the locker room together on the security footage.
Her suspicions are confirmed when she discovers Jack and Stella in the locker room’s shower. Chucky soon makes an appearance as well and discovers the affair. After several insults and a few punches to the face, Jack loses his patience and knocks Chucky unconscious. Chucky refuses to touch Jack’s money. Susan promises the get the issue sorted while Jack blames the whole incident on Stella.
Later that night when Eddie accompanies Susie and Jack to a local bar, a new business opportunity presents itself in the form of boxing promoter, Henry Collins (Max Beesley). They learn that they have quite a bit in common, including time in the military. Although no agreements are set in stone and before Eddie sneaks off, Collins hints at being able to help with his money laundering issue. Susie appears to keep a close watch on their interaction.
Eddie sneaks off to meet with Princess Rosanne “Rosie” (Gaia Weiss) where he admits to possibly getting in over his head with Stanley Johnston (Giancarlo Esposito). She offers her help but warns that Stanley isn’t a good person.
At breakfast the following morning both Lady Sabrina (Joely Richardson) and Tammy Horniman (Chanel Cresswell) ask Eddie to speak with Freddie over his new obsession. Tammy claims he’s gotten so bad that when he’s not talking about marijuana plants, he’s talking to them. Before he can respond, his attention is drawn to a call from Susie with the request for Jack to spend a few days at his estate. Apparently, Chucky felt the need to go on social media and ask his associate to attack Jack on sight. He reluctantly agrees before returning to breakfast where Lady Sabrina asks if they can expect guests.
Eddie meets with Freddy who attempts to unveil a new strain of weed. Apparently, marijuana plants have unique absorption properties. Essentially, putting a weed plant in the same soil as a coca plant will turn the buds into “Crack Weed.” Freddy’s hopes are dashed when Eddie expresses his desire to get out of the business, claiming that the Glasses cannot be trusted.
Eddie’s next meeting with Henry proves more eventful when he supposedly introduces him to the man who can help him clean his $15 million in less than two weeks. Henry does express a concern about Susie’s knowledge of their activities but Eddie assures him he’s got all that under control. Eddie is then introduced to the former accountant with an affinity for numbers, Thick Rick (Gary Beadle). Henry doesn’t even attempt to explain the boring complexities behind how Rick performs his miracle but it appears Rick has proven more than trustworthy and successful in the past. Eddie doesn’t seem to mind and takes Henry’s word for it.
Much to Eddie’s surprise, Susie shows up at his estate with $15 million for him to take to Chucky for cleaning. Chucky has apparently caved and even agreed to launder the cash without a commission. She tells Eddie that it will take 4 months, although a quick flashback shows that Chucky claims it will take 2 months. He asks her if there is anyone else that could wash the money and she assures him Chucky is the only man for the job. Later that day, Eddie’s earlier meeting with the princess proves effective when he receives a call from Stevens (Alexis Rodney), requesting to set a meeting with Mr. Johnston.
Despite his earlier meeting with Rick and Henry, Eddie decides to follow Susie’s plan for laundering the money. This changes when the meeting turns heated and Chucky inadvertently admits to Susie telling him to take her time. He not only subsequently delivers the money to Rick for laundering but he calls Susie to request a meet.
At the subsequent meeting, he doesn’t immediately tell Susie about his plans to go with Henry and Rick but he unveils his suspicions about her not letting him out of the business. She initially claims the plan is to let him go when the $15 million is clean but she changes her answer to never when he asks about Jethro’s (Josh Finan) death. She claims Jethro was killed for his benefit. Their meeting ends with both of them making veiled threats.
Susie arrives early at the Glass Knuckle to provide a few words of encouragement to Jack while Eddie meets Stevens and Stanley Johnston. Once Stanley is done making comparisons between British aristocracy and modern criminals, Eddie asks for his help with the lien of his property. Stanley doesn’t think twice about offering his assistance or that he’ll expect a “quid pro quo” in return. Eddie makes sure to dissuade him from using aggressive methods of persuasion before ending the meeting.
Tired of not being taken seriously, Freddy goes straight to Susie with his new strain and the fear that Eddie is making a mistake by trying to get out of the business. She appears to become disgusted when Freddy subtly hints at him inheriting the estate should anything happen to Eddie. As Jack makes his entrance, she makes a point of telling Freddy that she’ll do anything for her brother and encourages him to think about that. Her claims will soon be tested when Henry calls her into his office and unveils his plans to take over her business. He says she can either hand over the business without resistance or he’ll take her and her family apart piece by piece, starting with Jack. When she doesn’t take the offer Jack is subsequently dismantled in the ring. The episode ends with Susie riding in the back of an ambulance with Jack.
The Gentlemen Review
It is on now! I was starting to wonder where the series was going. I mean, Eddie trying to cut ties with The Glass Family has been an apparent storyline since the very beginning but that alone didn’t feel like it was enough to be the central focus. This potential war, however, could and will likely be a game changer. Although a war angle can only go so long as well, it’ll be intriguing to see where loyalties truly lie and how they come into play. One can only discover their true allies when they are in the muck. I felt this was a very good episode with great buildup and incredible character development. For that, I’d give it a 5.6. My only complaint would once again be some of the “long in the tooth” interactions and dialogue.
