I’ve Hundreds of Cousins – The episode begins with Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) visiting her father Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone) in Leyhill Prison. A quick word with the Prison Warden (Karen Bartholomew) and a loose baggage check allude to Leyhill not being your average run-of-the-mill prison. This is confirmed when Susie joins her father on the prison’s roof in his ornate pigeon cage. As Eddie Horniman (Theo James) becomes the topic of conversation, it becomes clear that Bobby would rather kill Eddie than let him out of the business. He expects Susie to keep it from ever getting that far.
Susie cleverly uses her and Eddie’s time golfing to solidify his involvement in the company. He doesn’t outright refuse her offer for a permanent role but drops several hints to indicate he plans on distancing himself. After the excessive doting fails, she changes her strategy by asking his advice on a current problem they are having with seized shipments at the Port of Zeebrugge. He appears more than eager, as she asks him to meet with the man in charge of the operation, Florian de Groot (Kristofer Hivju). She offers to have Keith (Mason Antonio Fardowe) and Blanket (Logan Dean) bring him to the farm to make matters even more convenient.
Florian doesn’t waste any time blaming the seizures on increased border regulations and his lack of funds to provide the right financial encouragement. When Susie asks how much that would cost, Eddie becomes suspicious of Florian’s immediate response of $1.5 million. Florian’s deception becomes even more apparent as he attempts to answer Eddie’s question about how he came up with that figure. Eddie pulls Susie aside to express his belief that Florian is tipping off border patrol so he can ask for more money. Susie claims she would be more suspicious if Florian was merely asking for 10%, but the $1.5 is nearly double. Eddie points out that if she pays, he’ll likely just come back for more. When she returns to the table to counter with an offer of $1.2, things instantly change.
They spend several seconds sitting around in the dark, tossing blame for the blackout around until Eddie and Blanket go aboveground to investigate. As they do, a quick shot reveals several intruders using the cover of the night to steal the grow room’s generators. One of the cars stalls in the mud just as Eddie and Blanket arrive, but it manages to escape. That is until it is cut off seconds later by Geoff Seacombe (Vinnie Jones) who has been alerted by the noise. What they discover are basically two children. The female, Kellie Ann Ward (Lead McNamara) is sassy but also convincing as she plays on Eddie’s empathy to let them keep one of the generators.
Returning to the meet, Eddie and Susie decide to simply send Florian back to Belgium without an answer and deal with their new problem, the Wards. Eddie and Susie learn that the rest of Ward clan is just as sassy and crafty as Kellie Ann. A quick meeting with their apparent leader JP (Laurence O’Fuarain) reveals that the Wards are all too well aware of the activities at the farm. Although Susie is ready to simply walk away, Eddie convinces her to use them to help with their current border problem. Apparently, the Wards don’t deal with anyone they haven’t partied with, which leads to a later meeting at Eddie’s estate where he plies them with expensive whiskey. JP doesn’t believe in showing up empty-handed and he brings along a homemade brew he refers to as Potin to prove. Although it doesn’t appear to go down well, Eddie and Susie help him finish the bottle. Freddy (Daniel Ings) and Tammy (Chanel Cresswell) Horniman get dragged into the party when they show up unexpectedly.
The following morning, Geoff and Lady Sabrina (Joely Richardson) are baffled as they watch an entire encampment of Gypsies set up camp on their front lawn. Not looking so great from the excessive partying, Eddie clears up matters when he arrives. As day turns into night, the Wards waste little time setting up their caravans and taking over the lawn. Presumably, the next morning while tending to chores, Geoff discovers Kellie Ann in the stables talking to one of the horses. Although he’s a bit demeaning at first, he softens and even lets her take the horse out for a ride. Lady Sabrina later joins him to watch the two of them gallop along. While doing so, they also share a conversation that alludes to him being Charly’s (Jasmine Blackborow) father.
Sometime later while JP and Susie walk the estate grounds, he asks about her relationship with Eddie. She merely chalks it up to a “work relationship.” When the conversation quickly becomes too personal for her, she switches the topic to his plans for smuggling their produce across the border. He explains the plan as he leads her to a building on the estate where Jimmy (Michael Vu) and several others are stuffing statues of the Virgin Mary full of bags of weed.
A series of fast-forwarded scenes show the Wards successfully crossing several borders, making deliveries, partying, and setting up camps along the way. They do appear to receive a bit too much scrutiny at one crossing but ultimately pass without incident.
The footage slows to show a meeting between Freddy and Eddie. Freddy notes how good Eddie is at the business and even suggests that the Glasses might be grooming him. Eddie admits they have asked to extend their contract. Although Freddy is encouraging, Eddie leaves the eventuality open-ended. Freddy also claims to be working towards his life goals but doesn’t explain further.
Florian meets with an unseen man in Belgium who doesn’t appear very happy about the Ward’s recent activities. When he shares cell phone footage of the Mary statues, Florian assures the man he’ll take care of it. Apparently, he does so by stealing the $4 million Quid their ventures with the Wards have amassed. Everyone is quick to point the finger at the Wards, which eventually leads to them packing up their camp and fleeing in the middle of the night, only making them look guiltier.
It is only after the Wards are gone that Eddie realizes he might have jumped the gun. He takes her concerns to Susie where they both come up with the same conclusion of Florian being behind the theft. A visit across the border, a meeting with Florian, and a very cleverly crafted poison and antidote confirm their suspicions. Armed with the name of the traitor, Eddie visits the Wards to request their help. This goes about as well as expected, but after some convincing JP agrees to help Eddie with the problem.
Keith is revealed to be the traitor at a meeting with the Wards in a heavily wooded area. As he is led off the driving path and into the foliage, Susie returns to the prison with Jack Glass (Harry Goodwins) to discuss who was behind Keith’s betrayal. No one seems to think he had neither the bandwidth nor the gumption to plan the betrayal himself. Keith maintains a hard façade up until the moment JP shoots him in the head. He warns them all that working for Bobby Glass will eventually lead them to the same end as he and Jethro (Josh Finan).
The Gentlemen Review
Much better episode! The shortened episodes appear to be working wonders for the series. Although it’s still nothing worth writing home about, I do feel it is starting to grow on me, which says a lot. Perhaps it was just this episode because it was the gypsy family that I enjoyed most. Less Freddy, Lady Sabrina, and Jimmy were a big plus as well. I’d give the episode a 5.5 and say it was easily one of the best thus far. Here’s to hoping the trend continues!
