The Frog Series 1 Episode 6 Recap

Dad Will Come Get You – The episode begins with Koo Gi-Ho’s (Choi Jung-Hoo) progression from a kid to a young man. He will first be shown at the Lakeview Motel where he encounters Ji Hyang-Cheol (Hong Ky-Joon) the night he stayed there. After Gi-Ho watches him carry the unconscious female victim into his room, the story skips ahead to the hotel’s closure.

Strangely enough, he will be shown assembling a rifle one day before a visiting Park Jong-Du (Park Ji-Hwan) and his ailing mother, Gyeong-Ok (Cha Mi-Kyung) at the hospital. They will very briefly discuss his mission over lunch. Gi-Ho will eventually return to the Motel where he is surprised by Jeon Yeong-Ha (Kim Yoon-Seok) but doesn’t have a problem gaining the upper hand on him. When Gi-Ho takes Yeong-Ha at gunpoint, Yeong-Ha will wake up in the hospital. He appears to be there as a visitor, not a patient. It won’t be long after this that Yeong-Ha learns about the suicide of Yeom Dong-Chan (Lee Yoon-Jae) from a TV newscast. This causes another shift in the footage and Yeong-Ha is now at the police station with Yoon Bo-Min (Lee Jung-Eun).

Sometime after allowing him to leave the station, Bo-Min will visit Yeong-Ha at his rental but instead of him, she will encounter Yoo Seong-A (Go Min-Si). Seong-A barely acknowledges her before speeding off in her convertible. As Bo-Min proceeds inside and goes through Yeong-Ha’s things, he visits a Realtor (Choi Yong-Jin) to inquire about the Lakeview Motel. Yeong-Ha will learn that the property is still leased to Koo Sang-Jun (Yoon Kye-Sang), who is apparently working at a nearby nursing home.

Yeong-Ha’s visit with Sang-Jun not only reveals that Yeong-Ha is curious about the Lakeview Motel incident, but the incident also explains his earlier confrontation with Gi-Ho. When the story eventually returns to that point, Yeong-Ha will be taped to a chair while Go-Ho goes through his phone. Gi-Ho receives a call from Park that sends him racing to the hospital with his rifle.

It will eventually be revealed that because he has been such a model prisoner, Hyang-Cheol is being presented with the opportunity to say goodbye to his mother. This is apparently the operation that Gi-Ho has been training for. After missing his first shot, Gi-Ho will begin his escape. At the same time, Hyang-Cheol uses the opportunity to kill one of his guards and escape. He probably would have gotten away if not for Park. Gi-Ho eventually makes his way to the hospital room and kills Hyang-Choel, after which he jumps out of the window and drives away. He returns to the motel to find that Yeong-Ha has not only escaped but armed himself with what turns out to be an airsoft pistol.

Although Gi-Ho thinks Yeong-Ha is a cop, he lets him go and tells him that the job is done and he’s not turning himself in. It is merely several minutes later that Yeong-Ha realizes Gi-Ho let him go because he plans on committing suicide. Yeong-Ha will not only stop the suicide but he will convince Gi-Ho to speak with his father by calling the nursing home.

After a heartfelt reunion with Sang-Jun over the phone, Gi-Ho will tell Yeong-Ha how, why, and when he decided to kill Hyang-Cheol. He will also admit to visiting Dong-Chan but he was already dead by the time he got there. Gi-Ho would read and steal the manuscript. Gi-Ho is floored when he not only learns that Yeong-Ha isn’t a cop but he’s apparently willing to provide him with an alibi. After telling Gi-Ho this, Yeong-Ha calls Seong-A, who is covered in blood, and asks if he is coming home. The episode ends with Yeong-Ha deciding that he will kill her.

The Frog Review

Wow, what a great episode. I couldn’t make heads or tails of much that was going on initially, but when the pieces started lining up, I began to see the genius in the writing. I had a feeling things wouldn’t eventually explain themselves but the reward was far more thrilling than I would have imagined. Although the whole assassination was a bit of a fumbled debacle, I enjoyed it. The nursing home parts and the time jumps made things confusing but things will eventually become clear. I’d give the episode a 6 out of 10.
