As the episode begins, we see that Lawrence (Josh O’Connor) has returned home. Louisa (Keeley Hawes) tells Larry about Spiros and Leslie (Callum Woodhouse). Lawrence announces that he would like to put together a play. Leslie wants to play the hero. Louisa steals the role from him. After the intro, Larry tries to restore the radio set so he can listen to news about the war. Louisa doesn’t want to hear it. Gerald (Milo Parker) shows the local kids his animals. Unfortunately, he cannot communicate with them. Galini (Olivia Lebedeva-Alexopoulou) arrives and helps out. Margo (Daisy Waterstone) tells Louisa that she intends to give herself to Nikos.
Louisa tries to talk her out of it. Leslie manages to track down Spiros (Alexis Georgoulis). He has been hiding down on the beach. Leslie explains himself. He also urges Spiros to return to the Durrells house. The others work on the play. Lugaretzia (Anna Savva) arrives with items for the play. She got them from her family. Margo enters and Nikos joins the play. He will be creating music. Spiros returns a few seconds later. Louisa attempts to smooth things over with him. They get a little flirty. Theo (Yorgos Karamihos) tells Louisa that war is getting closer. He suggests that she should leave with her family. Theo speaks to Gerald. He suggests letting some of the animals go. Theo doesn’t tell him about his real concerns.
Margo tells Leslie that she is going to sleep with Nikos. Spiros tries out his costume for Larry’s play. A police officer arrives outside. He wants their wireless. They pretend they do not have one. Nikos becomes upset that Margo has spilled the beans. She tells Theo about it. He tells her that such a thing should not be made public. Larry puts together a plan to hide the radio. He puts Leslie in charge of the play and rushes off. He meets with someone and asks them what his orders are. Gerald and Theo agree to let some of the animals go. Leslie loves his new role. Margo apologizes to Nikos. She agrees that it should be spontaneous. The family practices the play again.
The officer returns for the wireless. They add him to the play to prevent him from getting them in trouble. The postman arrives with a telegram. Louisa reads it and learns that Basil (Miles Jupp) has died. This convinces the family that they need to flee Corfu. Spiros tries to be fine with it. The family decides to perform in the play anyway. During the rehearsal, Louisa sees Aunt Herimone and Basil. She decides to let Leslie have the hero role. Leslie tells Margo about his concerns that night. He isn’t sure he can handle the responsibility. The play begins the following day. Larry has to help Leslie with his lines. He eventually does very well though. Louisa goes to Spiros.
He admits he cannot leave his family. They embrace and accept reality. Sven shows up and performs a risque act. Zoltan arrives by boat and rushes for Margo. Nikos doesn’t like what he sees. A short time later, Larry learns that Margo slept with Zoltan. She returns to the play. Leslie speaks about love and Daphne. He invites Louisa to the stage. She speaks to the locals and the fun time they’ve had in Corfu. After the play, the family has dinner outside. Larry says he will not be leaving Corfu. He has been working as a spy. They all share a drink and think of the future.
The Durrells In Corfu
I really didn’t think Spiros would leave Corfu with Louisa. Despite not liking this relationship, I still felt the season was pretty good. In fact, the finale was fantastic. It was very emotional. It was hard to see the Durrells leave Corfu and say goodbye to everyone. I haven’t watched the follow-up show, but hope to do so in the near future. I will miss the Durrells.
The finale was very well done. It scores an 8.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of The Durrells in Corfu right now.
