After The Storm – As the fourth episode of The Devil’s Hour begins, evidence photos are taken of a crime scene. After the intro, DI Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel) interviews Isaac (Benjamin Chivers) who says a man came into his bedroom and said it wasn’t his. He wanted Isaac to go so he decided to go to the woods. He got there in a black car. DS Nick Holness (Alex Ferns) asks what happened when he got to the woods. Isaac claims they left him before saying just stay here. Lucy (Jessica Raine) points out that he remembers what people say. Isaac says keep the door locked and it is okay because she is coming back. He says the man in the black car wanted to listen to music and he had seen the man before. Nick asks Isaac what the man looks like before Isaac begins pointing at Ravi. Later, Nick finds Ravi watching the interview. He gives him the papers he left on the printer.
Nick reminds him it isn’t their case anymore before asking if MCIS knows he is holding evidence. He tells Ravi to look at this from his fly-tipping hotspot. It is a picture of a vehicle near the spot in question, but the other cameras didn’t catch anything. The man must’ve spotted the camera, got spooked, and drove off in a hurry because he left behind a hubcap. Nick suspects they can narrow down the vehicle and work it into his theory. Ravi wants to know more about MCIS’s theory. Nick says it is snuff films and porn. The suspect was involved in whatever Slade had going on in the basement. Since they had a disagreement, the suspect killed Slade and started working alone. Ravi wants to work the watch in it because Isaac wasn’t wearing it and the suspect had a picture of it on his wall. Again, Nick reminds him that the case is no longer theirs. Once he leaves, Ravi continues watching the interview. In the interview room, Ravi asks Gideon (Peter Capaldi) about the supernatural.
Ravi says he thinks he sees the future, but Gideon says he remembers it. He is a time traveler and a fortune teller. Gideon begins saying what Ravi is going to say simultaneously. He saw the handcuffs coming because he knew Ravi wouldn’t give up after what happened with Aiden Stenner. Gideon doesn’t think he wants to talk about that. In a flashback, Lucy and Rob (John Alastair) visit Kate Stenner to see if she’ll talk about Aiden. She claims he isn’t missing even though he isn’t here. Rob reminds her that he is 17, but she says he’ll be 18 in January. Kate (Emily Pollet) eventually says he is just staying with some of his mates. She recommends trying Mia Thomas because she might be able to help them. Once Kate steps out of the room, Rob insists it wasn’t Karen’s fault even though it was her case. He explains that the last two weeks have been a mess. Lucy thanks him for stepping up and insists he does fine. They find party items in the apartment and nitrous oxide canisters in the trash.
When Kate comes back and finds Lucy taking pictures of stuff, she gets irate and pushes her. Lucy quickly takes control of the situation and manhandles Kate. Once she is free, Kate says she is going to call the police. Rob checks on Lucy before asking how she did that. Lucy admits she has no idea. Gideon takes a water bottle out of the trash. He pours some type of powder in it, shakes it up, and sits the bottle down next to him. A woman sits beside him. Gideon asks her if she would mind staying perfectly still for one second. A bee lands in front of him as Gideon says it just needs some food. He gives it whatever he had in the bottle while explaining that bees are key to their survival. Gideon goes on to say it feels good making one life better without making something worse. He ran over a dog two weeks ago on purpose that belonged to a four-year-old girl. The woman gets up and leaves. Later that night, Mike (Phil Dunster) talks to Lucy on the phone about nearly losing Isaac.
He wants to try again for Lucy and Isaac. He suggests going to her mom’s old cottage so she agrees to think about it before the call ends. Ravi arrives at the door so he can give Lucy a copy of Isaac’s interview. He reminds her that she said a psychiatrist wanted to see the footage. Ravi confesses he isn’t supposed to give it to her so he asks her not to lose it or make copies. Lucy promises to tell him what she says. She invites him in. Ravi admits there is something he wanted to ask her. Once the fire alarm goes off, she has to rush inside to deal with it. Lucy blames Ravi and suggests he should make them dinner. Isaac likes lobster while she isn’t fussy. Ravi wants to know more about Lucy guessing the code to the safe at Slade’s house and how she knew about the violin. She explains it is like the memory existed before somehow. Lucy also remembers the house and the awful room in the basement. She also mentions the two little girls in the photographs who were pulled from the water.
Ravi says that didn’t happen because he spoke to those two girls himself. Lucy admits she sometimes remembers things wrong. Isaac enters the room to say he is cold. Ravi shows him a very secret policeman’s handshake. He asks Isaac not to let his mom do anything dangerous like trying to cook dinner. Lucy invites Ravi to stay for Chinese, but he needs to get home since he has an early start. Lucy follows him outside to tell him about Aiden Stenner and his friend Mia Thomas. Once he learns that she is worried about it, Ravi agrees to ask around and try to oil some wheels. While Isaac lays the table, he thinks about Debbie and her family being in the house. Ravi makes it home and grabs a beer. He places the new pictures on his wall of evidence. He finds a picture of a note with the name Aiden S written on it. The next day, Ravi takes Nick on a detour to investigate Aiden’s case. Nick believes Mystic Meg says jump and Ravi asks how high. They confront Mia who is hanging out with friends.
Her friends curse at her to shut the door so she does. Nick doesn’t like that and wants to do something about it, but Ravi tells him to walk away and leave it alone. Ravi wants to do this properly so he’ll say that they’re following up on an anonymous tip and log it this afternoon. Dr. Ruby Bennett (Meera Syal) talks to Isaac about his watch which is broken. He explains that the strap got caught on the window when he was climbing into the house and broke. Isaac claims mommy likes him to wear the watch and he wanted to make her happy. He goes on to say he walked to the house and no one was there. He slept on the floor two nights alone but left when he got cold. Lucy finds it odd since he has never said he was cold before. Isaac doesn’t know how he felt when mommy found him. He cried because he was happy. When asked why he was happy, Isaac says she knew him. Nick and Ravi sit outside the apartment that night while talking about Bella and other things. Nick admits they talked about kids but decided they had enough to worry about.
They watch as a man gets rough with Mia outside before taking her back. Nick is told to call it in. Instead, he grabs a weapon from the trunk of the car with the intention of acting. As Nick walks towards the apartments, Ravi calls for assistance only for the radio to mess up. Nick busts through the door and gets into a fight with the man who is hurting Mia. He manages to handcuff that guy but gets attacked by someone else while trying to take him outside. He takes care of him. Another guy arrives with a long knife and begins fighting him. Ravi has to get involved this time. After the men are subdued, Nick and Ravi begin laughing. Lucy has a dream in which it looks like Nick has been hurt. She gets up and finds Isaac hitting his head on his pillow although he doesn’t know why he is doing it. He was having a bad dream because he thinks this is his home. Isaac embraces his mother and says they’re not supposed to be here. Nick and Ravi are interviewed about the incident. Lucy is allowed to speak to Mia (Daisy Prosper) who insists she doesn’t know where Aiden is.
Lucy is trying to give her a chance to do the right thing. She warns her that she’ll regret this tomorrow when it is too late. Mia eventually mentions Speed Kings and the old go-kart track on the Runford Estate. At home, Bella (Jane McCarry) makes Nick stay busy. She gets emotional when he reminds her that he nearly died. Bella tells him he needs to stop. Lucy takes Isaac to Mike’s house. She asks Mike to tell Isaac one of his crappy jobs since he has been smiling on and off. Mike says he’d like to come along and get involved in the meeting with Dr. Bennett. Mike tries to get along with Isaac later that night, but it doesn’t seem to go well. He asks Isaac if he’d like to talk about how he was crying when they found him because he is a good listener. Mike asks if he cares about anything before taking his food away to see if he can get a reaction. When he doesn’t, Mike gives the plate back to him. Ravi goes into the evidence room to collect information about the Speed Kings. Lucy goes to the racetrack and begins asking for Aiden.
Lucy tries to pay Aiden (Brandon Bendell) to get him not to sell there tonight because she is worried something bad is going to happen. Their conversation is interrupted when a vehicle pulls up outside. It backs up and speeds away. Lucy begins calling someone while Aiden pulls out a knife and tells her to put the phone down. Lucy doesn’t think he wants to hurt her since she just saved his life. She urges him to run home and not to stop. She tries to call Ravi, but he doesn’t pick up. The suspect vehicle passes by Ravi who calls it in to find out more about it. He is told it isn’t in the database so he follows it. Gideon tells them that their dreams, memories, and everything are connected. He can guess what happened to Isaac, but Lucy won’t believe him until she is as crazy as he is. Gideon doesn’t care what happens to himself since he’ll kill himself. He claims Ravi was never right for the job because he is a good man.
He is scared and trying to play the action hero. Ravi talks to Nick while following the car as his phone begins cutting out. Ravi turns off his lights so the car can’t see him. He has to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting it. Ravi notices that his phone’s signal is out so he can no longer talk to Nick. When he gets, Gideon jumps out of the car and yells that he is not supposed to be there. He pulls a gun on Dhillon and tells him to back away. He has never killed him before and would prefer to keep it that way. Gideon argues that this isn’t going to end well for anyone with Stenner still alive. He could’ve put Aiden out of his misery, but someone else is going to die now. Gideon waits for lightning to hit the power pole and topple it so he can get away. In the interview room, Gideon admits he wishes Ravi would’ve listened because he could’ve stopped the chaos. It is easier to blame Gideon instead of blaming himself for what happened after the storm. Aiden meets with Mr. A (Jimmy Walker) who talks to him what about happened at Mia’s place.
Aiden denies being a snitch. He wants out, but Mr. A isn’t going to let him go that easily. Aiden shows him his knife and promises to make it right so he can get off the line. Mr. A reveals they got the cop’s name and address that hurt Tyler and he wants Aiden to make it right. Lucy puts a heater in Isaac’s room to keep him warm. She gets a call from Rob who reveals that Kate has issued a formal complaint and they might suspend her. After the call, she finds Isaac with his hand directly against the heater. He begins laughing and doesn’t seem to feel any pain. Nick talks to Bella about writing a book and other jobs he could do as they prepare for bed. They hear something in the house but figure it is nothing and go to bed.
The Devil’s Hour Review
The fourth episode of The Devil’s Hour seemed to give away the mystery surrounding the memories and everything going on with Gideon. With Isaac back at home, Lucy focused on tackling the case of troubled 17-year-old Aiden Stenner. She got help from Ravi who seems to be becoming more than a friend as the series progresses. Ravi and Nick managed to track down Aiden’s girlfriend Mia and found that she was being abused by older guys.
They took care of those gang members so Mia could go home. Lucy talked to her there and found out where Aiden was dealing drugs. Since she was having memories of Aiden’s death, Lucy decided to prevent it from happening and she was successful in stopping Gideon. However, it seems that someone else will have to die now that Aiden has been saved and that person is probably going to be Nick.
It is still unclear how Isaac fits into the picture although that will likely be explored in future episodes. If I am right about all of this, the principle of the series has been done a lot of times before and some of the previous attempts were arguably more successful. Nevertheless, The Devil’s Hour does a lot of things right making it a worthwhile binge anyway.
The performances are excellent, the cinematography is superb, and the series is effectively moody. The episode was a bit messy at times as it jumped to Aiden’s case a bit too quickly while certain scenes could’ve been removed without hurting the story. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10.
