Tomorrow – As series three of The Bear begins, Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) looks at the scar on his hand at home. Then, he walks around the restaurant and arranges things. Before long, he works alongside Chef Luca (Will Poulter). As he smokes a cigarette, he sees Claire (Molly Gordon). Carmy tells Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto (Abby Elliott) he will call her tomorrow. He says New York has everything. Carmy goes to New York and begins learning how to be a chef. A NYC Chef, David, (Joel McHale) complains about Carmy’s work and says it’s way too many components.

David reminds him to never repeat ingredients. He shows him how to do better. Carmy is shown sitting with Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri). He checks out the freezer door moments later. Carmy is shown working with Chef Terry (Olivia Colman) later. Carmy yells for Luca to go before Terry reminds them to be quiet. At one point, Sugar tells Carmy she feels like she’s never going to see him again. Carmy remembers Uncle Lee (Bob Odenkirk) and Donna (Jamie Lee Curtis) yelling. One day, he makes out with Claire. Carmy apologizes to Sydney who says they made it. Carmy says she made it. Sydney says she made it with everyone else. She asks him not to let it happen again. Carmy says it won’t.

He asks if she wants to hear from him right now. Sydney admits she was talking about someone else. Carmy steps outside to call and apologize. Richard “Richie” Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) listens to Carmy’s message. Marcus (Lionel Boyce) is shown waiting at the hospital. Carmy writes down a list of non-negotiables. He remembers working with Chef Terry. She checks in on him later and finds him drawing. He also draws on the boat. Carmy tells Natalie that he’s okay and he’s good at this. Sydney calls Marcus to let him know they’re all here for him. She tells him to take all the time he needs and that he doesn’t even need to respond. As Carmy rides on the train, he remembers talking to Michael (Jon Bernthal) about running a restaurant.

Claire is shown getting into bed. Carmy looks at the wound on his hand. Claire gives a shot to a young boy. Carmy and Luca cook together. Terry tells Carmy that his drawings are beautiful. Carmy takes a picture of his dish and sends it to his brother. Michael shows it to Tina Marrero (Liza Colon-Zayas). Richie knocks on the door and yells for Michael. Natalie gives Carmy money. David tells everyone to stop so Carmy can catch up. Richie tries to call and asks to be called back. David tells Carmy that the dish is going to be his now. Carmy receives multiple missed calls from Sugar who pleads with him to call her. Once he finally gets in touch with her, Sugar tells him about Michael. Marcus lies in bed. Richie and others are shown leaving the funeral.

Richie and Carmy argue about Michael not leaving the restaurant to Richie. Terry speaks to Carmy about Copenhagen. Carmy remembers the Christmas crash. He says goodbye to his sister. David asks Carmy when he’s so slow. He questions whether they’ve reached as far as his talents can go. Carmy writes down no excuses on his list. It appears Carmy makes a dish that Sydney ends up receiving.

 

The Bear Review

It seems this episode has received hate from some viewers. It’s easy to see why considering it’s so much different than other episodes of The Bear, but it wasn’t that bad either. If viewers had developed authentic relationships with the characters, this could easily be a deep and emotional episode.

At the very least, it was an easy watch that was pretty chill when compared to other offerings from The Bear. The series has made its intentions clear where it’s going though and that’s right back to Sydney. It’s paving the way for her to proceed Carmy at some point if it hasn’t already happened.

This episode probably would’ve been better received if it had aired later in the season. Otherwise, it wasn’t that bad even though it was a bit pointless. It’d be nice if the show moved past Michael and all the trauma because the restaurant environment itself provides enough drama.
