Summer of ’67 is a romantic, war movie directed and written by Sharon Wilharm. Sharon is best known for The Good Book and Providence. Summer of ’67 is a little bit different. The movie takes a look at the Vietnam War from a whole new perspective. Instead of following the soldiers into war, the movie stays closer to home. The film focuses on two sisters who lost their mother to suicide after their father ventured into war. One sister, Milly, gets married and becomes pregnant with her husband Gerald’s baby. Gerald is sent away on the USS Forrestal.

Her sister Kate takes a whole different path. She is torn between her high school sweetheart, Peter, and her hippie boyfriend, Van. Van and Kate share something in common. They both despise the war. Peter also decides to join the army and boards the USS Forrestal alongside Gerald. The family’s maid, Ruby Mae, is also going to experience romance and hardships due to the war. The film stars Bethany Davenport and Rachel Schrey.

The two sisters are both going to experience the difficulties of the Vietnam War from the comfort of their own home. The paths that they travel will diverge significantly. Nevertheless, they’ll remain close-knit from start to finish. They’re bonded by past tragedy. The acting is surprisingly good. I never noticed any terrible acting that made me cringe.

Also, the camera work was very good. The story itself is very bleak and depression. It felt realistic from start to finish. The Vietnam War was undoubtedly a tough time for everyone involved. This includes soldiers and their loved ones back home. This film explores the impact on those left behind by the brave soldiers. It definitely represents the times very well.

Some praised the soldiers, yet others ridiculed them harshly. I’ll admit that the film is slow and it is obvious that it is a low-budget film. Nevertheless, I felt that it was meaningful and impactful. I nearly teared up at times. If you’re a fan of war films, but want something a little different, you’ve got to check out Summer Of ’67.

It was entertaining from start to finish. Stick with it and it’ll have a profound effect on you. I’d give it a solid 8 out of 10. Summer of ’67 is scheduled to be released on June 29. If you get a chance, you’ll definitely want to check it out! You will not be disappointed.
