Netflix has announced that The Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions, has selected a director for its upcoming movie about gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. This week, Higher Ground Productions announced that George C. Wolfe would be directing Rustin.
Higher Ground Productions’ Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan will produce alongside Academy Award winner Bruce Cohen and Dustin Lance Black. The film will be written by Dustin Lance Black who shot to fame after writing the 2008 biography film Milk.
Now, he will transform the real-life story of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin into a film experience for Netflix subscribers. Bayard Rustin was a civil rights activist who overcame various obstacles and altered the course of American history when he organized the 1963 march on Washington.
Rustin was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in November of 2013. The Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions, will now bring Rustin’s story to life.
