As the third episode of Somebody Somewhere begins, Sam (Bridget Everett) returns home to find a police car outside of Drew’s house. She talks to one of the cops who says Drew (Brian King) was dealing fentanyl. Drew says hello on his way to the squad car. Later, Sam joins Joel (Jeff Hiller) in his car and immediately tells him to drive because she is amped the heck up. Sam reveals she has been trying to figure out why Rick (Danny McCarthy) was at choir practice. She tells Joel about seeing a bunch of money in Rick’s back pocket when he was playing video games. Rick doesn’t have two pennies to rub together since his allowance is like 30 bucks a week or something. Sam wonders whether Rick has been selling drugs because they’re everywhere now. She orders Joel to pull into the Freddie’s restaurant.
Randy (Joe Dempsey) serves them when they use the drive-thru. He offers Sam a coffee, but she says no more because her heart would explode. Then, Randy asks about their relationship. Sam interrupts and says they need to go. Sam makes Joel park by the dumpster so he becomes worried that she is trying to buy drugs. She says she isn’t and Rick is the one selling drugs. Sam isn’t positive yet though. However, she threatens to cut Rick’s penis off if he is selling drugs. Joel learns that Rick usually comes there every morning so they’re waiting for him. They hide when they spot his van. Meanwhile, Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) looks at the storefront when a woman walks up and says the dog looks like Toto.
As Joel follows Rick’s van, he asks if it could be a gambling problem or something. Sam doesn’t think so because Rick is too unlucky and he is smart enough to know it. When Rick parks, Sam immediately lays the seat back and Joel freaks out about making an illegal U-turn. Once Joel finally parks, they look around and see Rick approaching the local chainsaw artist Bill Baker. Joel uses his birder binoculars to try to see what Bill is creating before Sam takes them to watch Rick. She tells Joel to grab his phone and get ready to record when stuff starts going down. Tricia returns to Charity (Heidi Johanningmeier) to tell her about Toto in Poppy’s window display. Charity saw it and it freaked her out too. Tricia says they’re going to fight fire with fire. Sam and Joel wait for Rick to do something for forty minutes or longer.
She begins crashing from the caffeine so Joel gives her a granola bar from his winter survival kit. Then, they start talking about the time Joel drove off the road during a crazy blizzard. She wonders if he had to drink his own wee-wee to survive. They joke around about that for a while before getting back to Rick’s possible drug dealing. Joel asks what she is going to sing at choir practice tonight and whether she’ll do some rockin’. She contemplates doing an Air Supply song as they laugh about the band’s songs with love in the title. Tricia and Charity finish decorating before going outside to look at their creation. They agree it is so cute. Sam and Joel nearly fall asleep until Mary Jo (Jane Brody) calls to see if Sam is coming home for the barbecue. When the call ends, Joel asks if she is going since Rick will be there and she wants to follow him. Sam says no because Saturdays are busy and she has a whole Saturday ritual.
She explains she likes to sit down and write down a list of goals for the week as well as a list of accomplishments for the previous week. When Joel says that is amazing, Sam confesses she doesn’t do any of that and instead lays around in her underwear drinking wine. Although Joel thinks it sounds a little lonely, Sam argues it works for her. As for Joel, he does church outreach stuff such as ESL and youth group mentoring. He also has a volunteer gig at the pediatric clinic every other weekend. Sometimes, he does clowning for the kids at the hospital. Once Rick finally begins moving again, they quickly follow him. A tractor hauling hay gets in front of them and obstructs their view so Sam repeatedly encourages Joel to pass it up to avoid losing Rick.
Joel tries and immediately hesitates. Then, he tries again and nearly crashes into an oncoming car but manages to get over just in time to avoid a crash. Regardless, Rick’s van is nowhere to be found anyway. Michael (Jon Hudson Odom) calls Joel to ask about getting lunch as they planned. Joel says he is helping Sam out with music and stuff. Michael tells him to have fun with Sam before abruptly hanging up. The tractor passes them up as they sit on the side of the road. Once Sam reaches her parents’ place, she looks in Rick’s van to see if there is anything suspicious in there. She goes around back with beer and joins Ed (Mike Hagerty) who says Rick is on the grill so he can burn the chicken for a change.
Then, Ed sings a song with help from Tricia and Sam. Meanwhile, Pastor Deb tells Joel she wants chips, salsa, and a frozen margarita for dinner. Joel says Emmett and Margs before he tells them to go ahead and he’ll catch up because he wants to work on some new choir music. Sam reads the essay Shannon (Kailey Albus) wrote and says she likes the stuff about grandpa and the popcorn garden. Tricia is surprised her daughter asked Sam. To make up for it, Sam tells Shannon she should ask her mom to help her with the community service part she has been struggling with. As Sam goes in to check on her mom and the egg salad, Tricia tells her daughter she doesn’t like the typeface. Since she is alone, she snoops through Rick’s jacket and finds two cellphones. Rick walks in and catches her. She quickly blurts out that she was a little cold despite the fact that she is sweating.
She flips between being hot and cold until excusing herself. Rick takes one of the cellphones from the jacket and goes back outside. Joel spikes the punch bowl at the choir practice venue. Once Sam returns outside with the others, Rick says he got a call about a busted heat pump and needs to leave. Sam sits down and begins eating the egg salad. She quickly spits it out and complains about the shells being in there, but her mom tells her to eat around them. Mary asks if anyone wants any s’mores before spraying the grill with lighter fluid. It creates a big fire that nearly burns Shannon. Sam shuts the lid while Tricia complains that their mother is wasted. Ed gets up to tell everyone to calm down before she screams in pain. At this point, Tricia and Sam learn about Ed’s foot being run over by their mother. Mary complains that everyone gets to drink except for her because everyone picks on her.
Tricia says she is tired of dealing with it so she is going to leave them in Sam’s care. Later, Sam shows up at the choir practice where Fred (Murray Hill) greets her. Fred tells her to control the controllables. Then, she invites her to come on the stage so they can give the kids a treat. Fred introduces Sam as their very own little miss Sampire. Sam sings Piece of My Heart as she moves through the crowd and plays with the audience members. Before the performance is over, she rips her shirt and shakes her boobs around. Once she exits the stage, Sam is overcome with emotion. Sam leaves and encourages her father to rest his foot although he says the farm isn’t going to take care of itself. She thinks Ed needs to talk to Mary about going to rehab. Ed says Sam is just as crazy as her sister because they all drink too much sometimes and that isn’t a crime.
Sam insists it is different this time because Mary ran over his foot and could’ve hurt Shannon today. Although he says they should talk to her, Sam doesn’t think her mother will listen to her or Tricia. Ed says they’ve known each other since they were 15 so you stop being separate people when you’ve been together that long. Mary is his other half. He’d rather cut off his arm than harm her. Sam believes that is the reason he has to be the one to talk to her. Ed goes inside before we see them arguing through the window. Just before the episode ends, we see two penises drawing on Tricia’s storefront.
Somebody Somewhere Review
Over the three episodes of Somebody Somewhere, I have come to appreciate the series. Initially, I didn’t think it would be something I’d like at all, but I am beginning to enjoy it more. I am still not a big fan of the humor although I can tolerate it better than I initially did. In fact, I am starting to find some of it a bit charming.
The show is pretty emotional at times and many of the issues are relevant to everyone. If viewers can look past the silliness of certain scenes, they may enjoy the show’s emotionally deep moments as I have. Since this is only 30 minutes, I feel they should’ve released it all at once though. Regardless, there is a lot going on in Sam’s small world and I am eager to see where things go from here.
The episode scores a 7.5 out of 10. All recaps of Somebody Somewhere will be available on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support the Reel Mockery project by following this link.
