As the second episode of Somebody Somewhere begins, Sam (Bridget Everett) is awoken by a circular saw outside. She rushes out to confront the man who promises he is almost done. Although Sam claims it is a bit early for that, it is actually 12:30. He says nice underpants as Sam looks down and realizes she isn’t wearing any. She admits they were her mom’s and that is why they’re vintage. Sam meets with Joel (Jeff Hiller), Fred (Murray Hill), and Michael (Jon Hudson Odom) after that. They begin discussing the food they’re going to order. Joel tells Michael he can get this without cheese because of his tummy. Fred finds it funny that he uses the word tummy instead of stomach. Michael asks Sam what she is going to sing during the next choir practice.
She insists Joel tricked her last time so she needs to think about it. The waiter comes over to ensure everything is fine. He calls Fred sir before quickly changing to mam. Fred says he got it right the first time. Fred pays for the meal before taking Michael with him. Joel and Sam decide to stay. Sam reveals she didn’t know this was going to turn into a whole thing. When she asks how she did, Joel admits he thinks she did well. Sam gets a call from her sister. She quickly answers it and tells her she’ll be there when she gets there. Sam tells Joel she has to go to her sister’s store so Joel agrees to walk with her. Before they go, Sam learns that Fred left a bit tip. Joel explains he usually does for waiters who feel uncomfortable. They talk along the way with Joel going inside the store once they arrive. Inside, they’re greeted by Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) and Charity.
The women ask Joel to smell a candle that he loves. Then, Tricia tells Sam she needs her handwriting on Monday night to help write invitations for the upcoming Crazy Dayz event. Tricia jokes about Sam being the one with really great handwriting. Sam agrees to help. Joel puts the candle back because he doesn’t need it. As they leave the store, Sam complains about always rolling over for her sister. They bump into Rick (Danny McCarthy) who doesn’t say much. Once Rick steps inside, Sam and Joel talk about him coming to the choir practice. It surprises Sam that Joel has seen him there before and immediately wonders if he is gay. Joel reminds her you don’t have to be gay to attend though. When Sam arrives home, her neighbor jokes by saying she found her pants. Instead of rushing inside, she stays and asks how it is going.
The neighbor, Drew (Brian King), has seen Sam coming and going for about a year although she has never said hi before. Sam is trying to be a people-person for a change, but she isn’t sure how that is working out yet. She compliments his trellis. He responds by saying he was going to espalier a Bougainvillea, but they tend to go back in the cold. Sam offers the pile of dirt and sticks she has if he is interested. Once she says she can’t keep anything alive over here, Drew says like Holly. He quickly regrets saying that while wondering if it was too soon. Sam promises it is okay. She just didn’t see that coming. Drew reveals he really liked Holly. They officially introduce themselves and exchange names. Before Sam goes inside, she admits it was really nice talking to him although it may not happen again.
Next, Ed (Mike Hagerty) enters his home and puts his jacket in the closet. When doing so, he finds a bottle of alcohol in another jacket pocket. Mary Jo (Jane Brody) follows him in and asks what he’d like to eat. They agree to prepare pot pies while Ed makes sure she doesn’t see the alcohol. At work, Sam looks at pictures on her phone despite the board saying no cellphones during grading. The woman behind her asks what she is looking at. She quickly says nothing and sticks the phone back into her pocket. Seconds later, Irma (Meighan Gerachis) takes Sam and the other girl into her office. Sam is asked if she knows what her daily quota is and whether she knows how many essays she graded today. Monica says she didn’t even look at her folder and that convinces Irma to move Sam over to Monica’s team.
Monica begins giving her an awkward pep talk using a Katy Perry song. In the breakroom, Sam tells Joel she could at least make money and get drunk while working as a bartender. She goes on to say she doesn’t care about this job. She notices he isn’t eating the whole cookie and asks what he does with them. He chucks one against the vending machine and she soon joins him. After work, Sam goes to her mom’s house to look at the old songbooks she has. Her mom is fine with her taking several of them but doesn’t know where her dad is. She just says he is out somewhere doing something. Sam goes outside where she begins yelling for him. She hears him banging on metal and calling her name from nearby. She finds him stuck in the small silo because the wind blew the door shut and quickly frees him.
The handle is broken off too. Sam can’t believe he didn’t call her mom although he insists it was his fault and not hers. Ed says he got careless with the dang door before Sam takes him inside to get him something to eat and drink. Sam joins Charity (Heidi Johanningmeier), Tricia, and a man as they begin completing the invitations. They ask Sam to hold onto Reshma’s invite so they can put a personal note in it because she is the one they need to get in with for the Downtown Business of the Year. Coop kisses Charity a few times before Rick enters carrying pizza boxes. Tricia tells Sam that one of the invitations isn’t perfect while Sam laughs about putting tits on another. When Sam enters the living room, she finds Rick playing video games. He invites her to join his raid, but she says she’ll join in on the next one.
She asks him whether work has been busy. He says it has been slow though. Then, they talk about the cute chaps his character is wearing. When Rick stands up and begins shouting at the game, Sam notices he has a roll of money in his back pocket. She goes back into the kitchen. As she steps in, Tricia and Charity quickly shoo each other. She tells them she is going to finish up here and go to Joel’s place. That leads to Charity asking about her relationship with Joel and whether they’re more than friends. Charity says it is good to have her back and suspects Sam is getting her life back on track now. Since they think she has a good job and possibly a boyfriend, they suggest she could start going to the gym. Sam tries to escape to the bathroom only to learn Coop will be in there for a while. She is asked about being eligible for benefits soon since Joel said so. Sam wants to know what this is about, why they care, and why they were talking about her anyway.
Tricia promises they were just trying to help. She doesn’t think Sam would be biting Holly’s head off like this. Sam gets mad and tells her to leave Holly out of it. She asks about her being embarrassed by Holly although Tricia quickly denies that. Tricia isn’t sure when she thinks real life starts, but she is over 40 so she should’ve already thought that. Sam decides to leave. As she walks out, Charity tells her they only want what is best for her. Sam curses her as she heads out the door. She shows up at Joel’s house with music books and beer. She notices the dream board he has although he calls it a vision board. Sam grabs it, places it on the table, and begins looking at his wishes. Joel admits he wants to go to Europe and would like to be part of a community. The Vitamix means he’d like to have a nice kitchen. He also has six kids with four of them being adopted. Sam seems to think it is unrealistic although Joel doesn’t think there is anything wrong with it.
She tells him to look around because they’re in their 40 and this is the future. Sam goes on to say it isn’t going to happen, but Joel insists they deserve to be happy. Sam admits she isn’t positive about that before deciding to leave. Once she leaves, she goes on with her life for a while. Later, she decides to visit Kim and learns they bought the boat like they always talked about. They agree to go out on the boat later. When Kim asks Sam how she is doing, she claims she is okay before quickly admitting she isn’t doing well. Holly told Sam to give it time and she would be happy to be there. She isn’t and can’t seem to get comfortable without her.
Both admit it is hard. Kim’s friend comes out to complain about the internet being out again. She tells her how to fix it. Once she goes back inside, Kim tells Sam she misses her every day so she is trying to do things that will make her happy. Kim says it doesn’t always work, but you have to do it like buying the boat. Sam thanks her for the advice and promises they’ll take a ride in the boat eventually. Mary tells Ed she is going to the grocery store. He follows her out and tries to convince her to let him drive. However, Mary Jo hits the gas and ends up running over Ed’s foot. Sam goes back to Joel to ask if they can talk. He stops working out to listen to what she has to say. She quickly apologizes for coming over and crapping all over his dreams. Joel admits it hurt his feelings. She says he has it all figured out and knows what he wants, but she can’t do that.
As for singing, she loves it although it breaks her heart too. Sam reveals Holly gave her some money to record some songs not too long ago because she knew that would make her happy. When Holly asked to listen to them, Sam wouldn’t let her since she didn’t think she was any good at singing or anything else. She tells Joel she isn’t friend material so he might not want to hang out with her. Joel insists she is overthinking it though. He thinks she is going to surprise herself and says they’re going to be okay. Joel asks if she wants to do some Zumba. Although she says no, she’ll agree to do it to get him back. Joel quickly turns the music back on. They do it together until the episode ends.
Somebody Somewhere Review
With the second episode of Somebody Somewhere out of the way, we can see where the series is headed. The second episode did a far better job of delving into the emotions it wanted viewers to experience. I am still not a big fan of the comedy, but the show surprisingly has a unique charm about it. I could easily see it transforming into an emotional rollercoaster over the next few episodes.
I do wish the show would be a little more serious with the storylines and drop some of the comedic lines because they don’t hit home for me. Of course, this is just a personal opinion so I may be in the minority here. I was not expecting to like the emotional side of the show as much as I am though. I think that is where Somebody Somewhere will shine.
The second episode was better than the first. It scores a 7 out of 10. Recaps of Somebody Somewhere will be available on Reel Mockery here. Learn how to support the Reel Mockery project by clicking this link.
