Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – As the 6th episode of SkyMed begins, a young girl approaches a group of loggers to tell them her brother needs a doctor. When Hayley (Natasha Calis) and Crystal (Morgan Holmstrom) arrive, the logger tells them that she’ll only say her brother needs a doctor. The little girl identifies herself as Ava before Crystal tries to get information from the little girl. She says her mother is out hunting and she just wants Dustin to be okay. Although she knows Dustin is at home, she doesn’t know her home address. They follow the girl back to her house where Dustin tells them he cut his leg a couple of days ago. Since he has been vomiting, Hayley decides to start an IV to treat possible dehydration. Crystal finds his HR is high, but the cut is too small to cause so much pain. She suspects the boy has crepitus or gas bubbles under the skin.
When the mom returns, she yells at the women and makes it clear she doesn’t want them there. Hayley explains they’re nurses and there to help. The mom wants to handle it on her own, but Crystal says he has a flesh-eating disease and needs a hospital visit. The mortality rate is almost 50% so the best-case scenario is he only loses his leg at the hospital. Crystal tells Dustin that he needs antibiotics and surgery. If he is over 16, he doesn’t need his mother’s permission to come with them. After Dustin says he’ll come with them, his mom agrees to go as well. Outside the hospital, the mom says her husband, Danny, was given antibiotics at a hospital down south for pneumonia. His throat closed and nobody would tell her anything. Crystal offers to keep her company once she clocks out after this call. Hayley tells Ava that just because something bad happened before doesn’t mean it’ll happen again.
Trevor enters to tell the mother, Marie, that the surgeons managed to debride a lot of dead tissue. Dustin will need a prolonged course of antibiotics and a lot of rehab but it is looking good. Marie is allowed to see her son. When Trevor asks Crystal about being off the clock, she admits Marie is skittish about hospitals so she thought she would help. They agree to have breakfast at Trevor’s place before kissing. Lexi (Mercedes Morris) and Nowak (Thomas Elms) make it home as Tristan cooks by the stove. Lexi finds it odd that he is making raspberry pancakes since they’re Nowak’s favorite. She finds out why when Nowak kisses Tristan. Chopper (Praneet Akilla) and Lexi didn’t know. Lexi tells Tristan that she is happy if Nowak is happy. If anyone makes him unhappy, they’ll answer to her.
As Chopper grabs a pancake and runs out of the room, he runs into a woman. Lexi is happy to see Nichelle who is on a reading week. Lexi wants to hear all about school, but she needs to get clean after a busy day first. Nichelle quickly introduces herself to Chopper as Lexi’s sister. A man approaches Bodie (Aason Nadjiwan) to say he knew his mother, Jolene. He invites Bodie to make a drum with them, but Bodie isn’t interested. He meets with Madison (Emilia McCarthy) and her mom, Missy. Madison reveals they’ll get to learn the baby’s sex at the next ultrasound. She suggests a baker can make reveal cupcakes for them. Missy gives her daughter the blanket they were brought home in as babies so the tradition can continue. Missy asks Bodie if there are any African or Cree traditions. He says he’ll have to think about that.
Once Missy leaves, Madison tells Bodie that she told him he was adopted and she must’ve forgotten. He promises to ask his adoptive parents whether they’re going to be here for the birth. Hayley finally goes in for the pre-screening. She begins panicking as the doctor instructs her to stay still. Hayley says she has been around MRIs before although she has never been in one. She learns that they’ll inject the dye so the oncologist can see better in a minute. Hayley needs to stop so she gets up and pulls off the cables. When she returns home with a fancy coffee maker, Crystal believes that is what she was doing in Winnipeg. Crystal checks on her since it is obvious that something is going on. Emma (Rebecca Kwan) talks to Sharon about her engagement party.
Crystal and Hayley join them and learn Emma is afraid to wear what she wants to her own engagement party. Emma says she is going to have a joint event with Devon (Gino Anania). Hayley believes should have a bachelorette party because you only live once. Hayley is asked to get the IV switched over while Crystal asks Emma in private if she has told him yet. She says she is waiting for the right time and she loves Devon. Emma believes they’re soulmates and belong together. Hayley reveals they’re going to host her a bachelorette party in Thompson tonight. Although Crystal doesn’t think that is a great idea, Emma loves it. Later, Crystal says they need to keep this low-key. Hayley says they’re young and need to start having a lot more fun while they can. Chopper says he’d rather have a fun party but seems sad when he learns it is Emma’s party.
Lexi learns her sister is looking at flights to New Orleans because she is taking the rest of the year off. She doesn’t think being a lawyer is for her since the thought of spending two more years in school makes her want to throw up. She wants to take time off to find out what she wants to do. More importantly, she wants Lexi to tell their parents because she is the responsible one. Lexi is worried she is going to throw everything away. Nichelle goes inside where she learns about the party and is quickly invited by Hayley. She puts on one of the t-shirts Hayley made for the party and asks Chopper what he thinks. He stumbles over his words and quickly finds an excuse to leave. A street artist gets run off by a security guard. He climbs a fence to get away. Once he reaches the top, he taunts the guard before falling. When he is picked up by Tristan and Chopper, he complains about the difficulty of being a street artist in Windy Lake.
Chopper asks if he has a death wish since they’ve picked him up numerous times. He’ll need surgery and a lengthy recovery before he can hold a can again. Chopper argues that this hobby doesn’t love him back so he should move on to something else. Tristan asks if he has considered canvas. Chopper tells Bodie about the party and learns that Madison is at her mom’s tonight. When Chopper says he needs to get over this, Bodie says the best way to get over someone is by getting under someone. Later, everyone gathers for the bachelorette party. Once they drink a little, they decide to play the fiancé quiz. Hayley says Devon has pre-recorded some answers. For every answer she gets wrong, Emma will have to take a drink. She quickly gets the first question right. The next question asks about Devon’s favorite movie and she gets that one right too. While she gets all the questions right, Devon gets all his questions wrong.
Emma goes for more shots before telling Crystal she just doesn’t want to think tonight. Back at the table, Nichelle tells everyone about Lexi having to dance at a club for money once. Emma hears her song and convinces everyone to dance. Lexi asks her sister why she’d tell them that when she has to work with these women. Nichelle doesn’t think they care, but Lexi says they’re not trying to make captain either. Lexi complains it only takes one bad rumor for a person of color to lose control. She might not think it is a big deal to drop out and screw up her dreams, but Lexi isn’t going to screw up her dreams. Bodie contacts his parents to tell them about the baby. His dad asks if it is a done deal because he has his whole life ahead of him and a baby is a lot of responsibility. Bodie isn’t going to walk away from his child.
He tells them about getting a place with Madison. His mom warns him that committing to the child means committing to Madison for better or worse. When Chopper makes it home, he is surprised to see that Nichelle is already there. Chopper tells her about the prisoner transport they did earlier and his terrible street art. She asks about his plans for the evening before they go to a bedroom and make out. Chopper tells her he is down for a no-strings-attached thing because it got messy last time. She asks if he wants to talk about it. Although he says no, they end up talking about it instead of sleeping together.
The others come home and decide to cook. When Chopper comes out, he is surprised to see Emma. Lexi accuses her sister of sleeping with her coworker until Chopper insists nothing happened. Nichelle doesn’t like that she will believe Chopper and not her. She says she is going to get a motel. Nichelle says they can’t all be an overachiever like her before she collapses to the floor. There is no pulse and she has a congenital heart condition. Lexi says she had an ICD put in five years ago so something must be wrong. Chopper calls an ambulance while the others begin treating her. Tristan tries shocking her. At the hospital, Trevor says it looks like a lead failure. Nichelle will have to go to Winnipeg for emergency surgery to get the ICD replaced. Trevor will need to call Winnipeg to make sure there is a cardiologist around to receive her.
Crystal follows Trevor into the hallway to learn more about Nichelle’s chances. He says she needs a replacement fast and his buddy is the best cardiologist in Winnipeg. Although he is on vacation, Trevor will see what he can do. She asks if he’d do that. Trevor says she is always taking care of everyone else so he doesn’t know why she is surprised when someone tries to take care of her. Nowak checks on Lexi and tells her that she’ll be okay. She used to get so mad at her sister. When she got sick, her parents would ship her off to cadets so they wouldn’t have to deal with her at the hospital. Nowak knows she was there more than him and he was there a lot. Lexi believes her sister got her whole childhood with their parents. Nowak tells her that she is lucky since she had a big dream and her parents supported it. He admits his parents are still giving him a hard time. His dziadek still sends him letters telling him he is shaming the family.
Lexi will be proud of him for them. Crystal confirms Trevor’s friend is driving back to the city to meet them in Winnipeg. She sends a message thanking Trevor and telling him she loves him, but instantly regrets it. She returns home to tell Hayley and Emma what is going on before telling Emma to rehydrate. Once Hayley brings drinks, Emma tells Crystal that she is pretty awesome. Crystal asks if they’re going to talk about her having the hots for Chopper and not really wanting to marry Devon. Emma says she does want to marry Devon since they’ve been together since high school. They also had a plan. Crystal believes it is okay to grow up and grow out of people. Doc tells Hayley about the patient. Everyone thought he’d go pro but he stayed here to look after the family business. 45-year-old Carl has pharyngeal cancer. Three weeks ago, he had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor.
He started experiencing a consistent pain on the side of his throat. On the plane, he begins complaining about the pain. Hayley checks the wound only for blood to spew everywhere. She yells for Chopper to warn Thompson that there is a man with a carotid bleed. Bodie goes back to help when she says she needs another set of hands. She admits she can’t take the pressure off because he’ll die in seconds. If there is too much pressure, the man could have a stroke. Hayley instructs Bodie how to keep Carl’s fluids up. She guides Bodie while trying to reassure the patient that everything will be fine. Bodie wipes the blood from her face. Hayley rides on the stretcher once they reach the hospital. She finally lets go when someone else takes over. Bodie goes to the locker room to make sure she is okay and finds her in her underwear.
The patient made it through surgery and should be out of the woods. It is just hard seeing what cancer can do to a person since her mom died of cancer. Hayley tells him more about her mother and what she was good at. She hates that she thinks of the cancer first when she thinks of her mother. Bodie learns that she had the BRCA1 gene. She had a panic attack in an MRI yesterday because she kept wondering if this was the moment she becomes the girl with cancer. Bodie tells her that she’ll always be Hayley to him. He mentions what she just did and says she’ll always be a hero to him.
Hayley kisses him before he returns the favor. Madison walks in on them making out. Hayley apologizes and leaves as Madison begins criticizing Bodie. She doesn’t know why it took so long to see that he would never give back the love and trust that she gave him. He doesn’t know how. Lexi jokes with her sister before telling her she got a new ICD. She apologizes for being so hard on Nichelle who apologizes for asking Lexi to do her dirty work with their parents. Nichelle insists she came there because she missed her. She had a dream and she is living it now. Nichelle couldn’t be prouder of her sister. Lexi tells her the same. Emma calls Devon and leaves a message saying she isn’t coming home and can’t marry him. Chopper is surprised to see her walking away from the plane. Crystal arrives at home to check on Hayley since she heard about the carotid bleed and Bodie.
She understands why she came up here now and why she has been so intense lately. Crystal warns her that she is going to keep hurting people and herself until she deals with it. She had a lot of pressure because her kookum was a prominent elder. Crystal was afraid so she decided to run from it, partying, and getting into trouble. She ended up getting pregnant when she was barely 17, but knew things had to change. Jeremy was never the man she was going to have a baby with so she had to walk away from him. She had a miscarriage eight weeks in meaning it didn’t matter anyway. It was the push she needed to stop running so she made peace with it. Hayley is going to get her MRI since she doesn’t think she can run anymore. Crystal goes with her to the hospital to get the MRI. Bodie returns home to find that Madison had left.
He tries to find information about Jolene online but comes up empty. Bodie goes back to the guy from earlier to see what he can tell him about his mom.
SkyMed Review
This episode of SkyMed was a little all over the place so it didn’t have a lot of focus. The season might be too long since some of the storylines are beginning to drag. Some stories are better than others and some characters are less tolerable. In a way, the series may be trying to do too much at once. Some of the characters are very unlikable. While the acting is decent anyway, I am having a difficult time caring about Bodie’s problems.
It is getting old that everything he does is being blamed on being an adopted child. Even when something good is happening, SkyMed will find a way to create a problem or multiple problems for the characters. Many of these issues are cheesy so it’d be better if the series focused more on saving people instead. The characters don’t need to be hooking up, fighting, or drinking in every other scene.
The episode scores a 5 out of 10. Recaps of SkyMed can be found on Reel Mockery here. Learn how to support our work at this link.
