Where There’s Smoke – As the fourth episode of SkyMed begins, Crystal (Morgan Holmstrom) gets hit with a water balloon before going after Bodie (Aason Nadjiwan) with a water gun. Once they finish playing, Hayley (Natasha Calis) learns about the wildfire season. Later, Bodie prepares to leave with Madison (Emilia McCarthy) who is thinking about visiting her grandparents this week. Then, Petra (Sarah Luby) can’t get through the vows during her wedding. She tells Glen that she tried before throwing up blood on her dress. When SkyMed picks her up, she tells Tristan (Kheon Clarke) that she has been taking a lot of antacids. Once he learns she has been taking two bottles a day, he theorizes that she has a perforated ulcer. She knew it wasn’t right with Glen, but the deposits were already paid. Tristan argues that nothing good comes from bottling it up.
At work, Trevor tells Crystal that he wants her to observe when one of the patients is intubated. He shows her how it is done before offering to let her practice on a dummy. Chopper (Praneet Akilla) contacts Emma (Rebecca Kwan) to ask about the sky. He learns that it is her real wildfire season here so she is nervous. He reassures her that the fires are moving away from her. Emma jokes about the runaway bride selling her dress at a discount. Isabelle rushes in so Emma has to pause the conversation. She wants an enema kit to clean out her dog’s ears. Isabelle notices the wedding magazines and says weddings and divorces were simple in her days. Emma gives her something else that might work. Jeremy (Braeden Clarke) enters and tells Isabelle that he has been looking for her. He gives her a gift for the dogs before offering to give her a ride home.
Before Jeremy leaves, he winks at Emma. Brad (Matthew Kevin Anderson) tells Lexi (Mercedes Morris) that AV is doing interviews about Wheezer’s crash. He wants to make sure she is doing to do the right thing for both of them, but she reminds him that he doubled the cargo and didn’t care that the straps weren’t secure. He argues that it was just as much her fault because she walked away without telling anyone. He thinks she should keep her mouth shut for that reason. Lexi is willing to risk it since she can always find work elsewhere. Brad knows guys at all the other places and they’re not going to be eager to hire a pilot who won’t have their back. Pierce (Jeff Teravainen) introduces Bodie to Aviation Authority representative Edwards who asks if he saw William in the 12 hours leading up to the crash. Bodie says they stayed up late talking.
He did not see William consume alcohol or narcotics during that time. Chopper says the same because Wheezer (Aaron Ashmore) is by the book. Tristan tells Edwards more about the situation once they arrived at the crash site. He mentions they had to move boxes because the cargo had come loose and slid forward into the cockpit. When Nowak (Thomas Elms) is asked about the cargo, he admits it looked like the cargo was not properly secure. He refuses to elaborate on that though. Lexi is asked about loading the cargo and says she loaded the caravan as per usual. She says it was loaded within the limits and the load was properly strapped down the last she saw it. Constable Jennifer Lee (Rong Fu) with Northern Police interrupts to listen to the interview. Lee asks if she confirmed the cargo matches the manifest. Lexi says it is standard practice to crosscheck all cargo with the manifest.
When pressed on it, she claims she personally checked that the cargo matched the manifest. Jennifer questions her about the dozen cans of baked beans they found at the crash site since they were on the manifest. Lexi admits she can’t explain it because what she loaded matched the manifest. She panics after the interview before Hayley checks on her and she pretends it was low blood sugar. Hayley is questioned about whether Jeremy was at the airstrip that day. She confirms he was. Then, she says Wheezer was conscious but disoriented when they arrived at the site. She has to leave when she receives a call.
Doc tasks her with transporting Madison to Thompson for an ultrasound after she fell from a horse. She pleads with Hayley not to tell Bodie about the accident. Once on the plane, Madison begins asking questions about the fire and smoke. She tells Hayley that she has ridden since she was ten. She hasn’t been on the horse for a while since she has been busy with work and Bodie. She just wanted something normal again because things have been changing so quickly. Hayley tells her she is allowed to want normal. Madison knows Hayley didn’t know about her and Bodie. Hayley promises she wouldn’t have if she did. Madison doesn’t think they’d be together if it wasn’t for this. It doesn’t feel like they’re dating anymore and instead feels like they’re playing house. She worries about what’ll happen if she loses the baby. Later, Chopper tells Hayley that they should tell Bodie, but she doesn’t think so because the patient has a right to confidentiality.
Once Chopper is alone, he contemplates calling Bodie but stops. Hayley agrees to stay with Madison because she doesn’t want to be alone. Once they find a heartbeat and know everything is okay, Madison decides to call Bodie. Later, Crystal tells Hayley that she did a good job of protecting her patient instead of telling Bodie. She also says she is going to have an interview with Aviation Authority tomorrow. Hayley warns her that the police are sitting in and asked about Jeremy. She promises she didn’t mention anything about Crystal sewing him up. Hayley catches up with them at the bar later and finds it full. Crystal says that is why they call it snagging season. Lexi asks Nowak if one person could ruin your career in the aviation industry. He tells her about Rossi who was up here before she arrived. He would sleep with everyone’s girlfriends before trying to move to the next town and get hired there.
Last Nowak heard the guy was still driving. Bodie arrives and tells them that Madison is fine since she was in good hands. Hayley goes for a drink while the others discuss the Aviation Authority trying to blame this on someone. Bodie threatens whoever is to blame for Wheezer’s accident. Nowak listens to Tristan talk to another man at the bar. Tristan is surprised that Eric and Nowak were friends. Eric explains that everyone hated him when he couldn’t cut it at first. Nowak was the only one who didn’t. He’d get up early and help him practice until he got it right. Eric promises to catch up with Tristan later before leaving. Tristan asks Nowak what Eric’s deal is. Nowak tells him not to waste his time because he isn’t for him. Tristan doesn’t like hearing that since he decides who is right for him. The following day, Crystal is interviewed by Edwards and Lee. She is asked what Jeremy Wood was doing at the crash site.
She says everyone was moving cargo because there was a fire risk. Lee asks her if she can describe the boxes Jeremy removed from the caravan. They learn that the fire is on the move and North House needs to be evacuated as soon as possible. Crystal rushes out so she can help her community. Emma tells everyone that there is one more passenger left. She rushes over to Isabelle who can’t leave because she is looking for her dog. Regardless of what Emma says, Isabelle isn’t willing to leave without Buttercup. Emma tries to wave for the plane to stop it from leaving only to fall and hurt her knee. Isabelle puts something on the wound and says they can leave by boat when they’re ready to go. She continues telling Emma about her husband. Emma asks how she knew he was the one. Isabelle says love doesn’t work like that and there isn’t the one. You have to pick someone to be with.
You stay together for as long as it works and listen to your spirit. Emma agrees they have to find Buttercup. Crystal works with the locals and talks to Jeremy before Chopper enters asking about Emma. Bodie and Hayley prepare to take other passengers. One man seems to notice Bodie and calls him Jolene’s son, but Bodie says he just has a familiar face. Crystal learns Uncle Wayne can’t breathe. Jeremy helps her deal with him as Crystal believes she needs to put in a tube to help him breathe. She does what Trevor taught her and confirms he will be okay.
When they reach the hospital, Trevor warns her that she could lose her license because she isn’t certified to intubate the man. He tells her she is lucky it worked. Emma and Isabelle find Buttercup and manage to lure her out of her hiding place. As they prepare to board the boat, Emma is surprised to see a plane heading toward them. Chopper lands before helping them get onto the plane. Firefighters work to prevent the fire from destroying North House and Deep Lake. Eric is put in charge of laying out the deck cord for C4. When Eric’s phone rings, he is told to back away slowly since it could set off the bomb. He pushes his boss away and gets blown back by the explosion. The Captain tells Nowak and Tristan about the accident when they arrive to help. They cover his burns before Eric admits he doesn’t want to leave his team. Nowak tells him he is a liability and needs to get out of the way so the team can finish the job.
It works and they haul him out of there. Wheezer arrives at the hangar to see what he can do to help. He tells Lexi that Lynn’s family is from North House. She confirms they got them all out. When Wheezer leaves, Bodie comes over to complain that Aviation Authority is going to blame the crash on Wheezer and claim pilot error. She decides to visit Pierce to amend her statement because she didn’t tell the truth. She tells him about overloading the plane and Brad telling her to do it. Lexi knew it wasn’t safe, but she just walked away without reporting it. She knows she might be fired. Lexi says they will put the safety of everyone in the plane first when they put on the gold bars. She isn’t sure she would’ve been able to put the bars on again if she hadn’t told him. He dismisses her. Emma and Isabelle meet with Crystal and the others. Crystal admits Isabelle is her grandma.
They’ve never been able to get her on a plane because she was stolen from her parents and forced into a residential school the first time she was on one. Jeremy gets a call confirming North House is safe. Tristan and Nowak are at the hospital when Eric comes back. Tristan tells him that he saved North House and scars are sexy. Nowak walks out. Tristan joins him outside and asks if he doesn’t think he is good enough for Eric. Nowak tells him that Eric isn’t good enough for him before kissing him. They have sex. Crystal gives Emma a place to crash for the time being. Once Emma is alone, she calls Devon (Gino Anania) to tell him about the wildfires and staying in Thompson for a bit. He doesn’t seem as impressed about beading as she does. Hayley asks Bodie about Jolene before apologizing since it is none of her business. He says his dad was Jamaican and his mom was from Deep Lake.
That is all he knows about his birth parents and his mom gave him up the day after he was born. He thought he’d come to Thompson and find her, but it hasn’t worked out yet. Today is the first time he heard his mom’s name although he isn’t sure what to do with it. Hayley thinks he should go home since Madison is going to need him. She also recommends taking her out on a date sometime. Trevor admits that Crystal saved Wayne’s life. He also blames himself for her overstepping her bounds since he showed her how to intubate. Although he likes her, he is pushing her because he knows she is incredibly talented. Constable Lee arrives to ask Crystal a few questions about Jeremy and her career. She asks about her being able to write prescriptions soon as a nurse practitioner. Jennifer knows what Jeremy is doing and what he is bringing up here.
Crystal knows about the alcohol, but not the oxy. Lee tells her to call if she thinks of anything that might be relevant. Bodie checks on Wheezer who tells him that he wasn’t responsible for the crash since the plane was overloaded and the straps were secure. Although he used to think flying was his life, he is just glad to be home with Lynn and the kids. He thinks there might be more important things to live for. Bodie goes to the ultrasound with Madison. Lexi tells Brad that she shouldn’t let them hang it on Wheezer. When she says she is keeping her job, Brad reveals he is too although he has two weeks of suspension with pay.
Chopper joins Emma who is busy working on the beading project. He jokes it isn’t good, but it is a big deal to be learning and getting included in something like that. They end up kissing before Emma stops. She says she can’t be doing that since she has a fiancé. They have sex anyway.
SkyMed Review
The fourth episode of SkyMed had a cute dog, lots of romance, and wildfires. Aspects of the episode were cheesy, especially some of the romance stuff. The series often places more emphasis on romance than on saving lives. In this regard, it doesn’t do much to set itself apart from other shows in this genre and there are many of them.
The scenery is nice and the plane scenes are actually pretty good. In general, this doesn’t look like a low-budget series when the planes are in the air. While some of the relationships can be a bit annoying and unrealistic, most of the characters are at least tolerable. At the very least, everyone has a unique personality that seems realistic.
The episode did a good job of strengthening several key relationships while clearing Wheezer’s name so he can return to work soon. SkyMed isn’t bad even though the romance is often rushed. Fans of medical dramas will probably enjoy it. The episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of SkyMed can be found on Reel Mockery here. Learn how to support our tireless work at this link.
